Ryan Duffy's Ratings and Reviews
Went for a birthday celebration with my spouse. The waiter was very attentive and his recommendations were right on. The tuna was fabulous, the steak delicious. The dessert recommendations were also a good choice and the birthday candle in one was a very nice surprise. Had a great meal and a great time.
It's pretty hard to find anything negative to say about such a great dining experience. This is s close to perfection as we've seen in Halifax. The food is pricey but you get what you pay for; a great meal, great ambience and great service.
Thankfully we had a Groupon coupon that made the expense much more palatable so best of you can latch onto a coupon too.
But coupon or not, a very special dining experience.
My wife and I went to Ryan's to celebrate our anniversary. This was our second trip. We love everything about the restaurant . All staff are friendly and cheerful. The jar of pickles and freshly baked rolls are a nice touch. We had the tableside Caesar, which was very nice and fresh. Our steaks were cooked to perfection, and I could barely finish my 14 oz ribeye - but I'm a trooper! Dessert was deep fried cheesecake. mmmm.
My girlfriend and I celebrated our six month anniversary at Ryan Duffy’s and very much enjoyed the evening. Both of our steaks were amazing, the ribeye for me and the tenderloin for her were both very tender and flavourful. We ended our evening with the deep fried cheesecake which we would very much recommend. We were a bit concerned when we walked into a nearly empty restaurant on a Friday evening, but the food and service were amazing, great evening for us.
Very bad experience. Three of the four steaks we ordered were sent back. One steak was so tough you could not cut it with a knife, others were not cooked properly and when they were sent back they came out well done instead of medium. I would not recommend this steakhouse to anyone.
Service was good. Food was great. But I was very disappointed that none of the reasonable prices wines were avalible . And this wasn't mentioned until we had already ordered. Ended up paying close to $50 for s bottle of wine that I can get for $20 at the store because that was the only option, unless I wanted to pay more. The food was good, but the whole experience was meh. I'd go back if someone else was paying.
I was not 100% satisfied, my girlfriend ordered fish chowder and there were bones in the chowder, I ordered the starter nachos and I am not sure what I got,, looked like potato skins covered with chilli, ask for garlic bread with my pasta ,I got the bread when my meal was almost done, we both ordered martinis and we got a mixed drinks in a drink glass,
This was our first stop on a night out to celebrate my husband's birthday, and we chose it because he is a steak lover, and we'd heard that Ryan Duffy's is top notch. This turned out to be true; he found the steak here exceptional, arriving to his exact specifications (doesn't always happen), and with lots of delicious trimmings: mushrooms, and bacon, sour cream and chives for his baked potato.
For me, a non-meat eater, I was less excited to go to a 'steak house,' but was pleased to see lots of great options on the menu. One was 'award-winning' seafood chowder. I decided to order it as a starter, which I wouldn't have if it were not for a recent wisdom tooth extraction. I'm not a big fan of chowder in general, but it seemed like it would be one of the easiest things to eat.
A fortuitous choice it was!
This chowder is phenomenal: creamy, loaded with seafood and flavored with a hint of dill. My husband also ordered it as a starter, and agreed it was outstanding. It's so good that I would recommend it to those who love chowder, as well as those who don't.
I chose asparagus ravioli for my main; it was great. The pernod cream sauce and soft ravioli noodles were flavourful and delicious; I took most of it home because I was feeling sore, and, by that point, pretty full from the heaping portion of chowder. I can't wait to eat it later.
It's also worth noting that Ryan Duffy's has a warm, welcoming atmosphere, with a roaring fireplace, great music, and wonderful staff. We will be back!
Ryan Duffy's has been the go to place for high quality steak in Halifax for many years and they still do excellent dry aged beef. My tenderloin was tender and flavorful and my wife's beef wellington was also done well, and a very large portion as well. Our guest's halibut however was overcooked and while not bad, not up the standards you expect from a high end restaurant in a city by the ocean that's famous for its seafood. Unfortunately, our biggest disappointment was the creme brule. This was just a creamy liquid under the torched sugar topping rather than the normally expected custard. We decided to send it back to the kitchen and skip dessert. The service was friendly and efficient from an experienced and knowledgeable waitress. On the night we went there were only two other tables with customers so it was quiet and comfortable. Overall I would say that if you are looking for a traditional steakhouse where they know their beef and you don't mind paying for quality it would be a good choice. However, be careful if you wander too far away from the meat options.
This was not my first visit to Ryan Duffy's, but it will probably be my last. Previous experiences have been great, but this one was left wanting. Out of four of us at the table, only one had a tasty meal, although the side was cold. The remaining three of us had virtually tasteless mounds of steak that appeared to have been thrown on a grill and not seasoned, other than the jus that the cold fries were drowned in. Only one person ordered dessert - the crème brule - which turned out to be more of a chocolate mousse with no discernible torched crust, even though we were assured after delivery that the chef said it was a crème brule. Not a pleasant dining experience that we are used to at this location.
The food was very good. However, I do feel, for the decor and ambiance, the prices are too high. I can easily find a restaurant in Halifax with food just as good, for considerably less. For those who don't mind dropping $100 for a meal for two with no alcohol and no dessert, it is a great spot. But we certainly wouldn't be able to ever do it without a gift card, as we had this time.
The food and service were spectacular. We went for my girlfriend's birthday and she absolutely loved it. We both ordered a Caesar salad, which is made at your table from scratch; this mean you choose the spices they add to the sauce as they literally make it right there (no bottled dressing). Then she ordered the dry aged tenderloin, which they bring out and allow you to select and have cut, before they bring it to the kitchen to have cooked. I ordered their 9 oz tenderloin, which wasn't as nice as hers but was still phenomenal.
Firstly, when we arrived we were shown to a table and I asked if we could sit by the window, we were moved but told that a large party was about to arrive and wanted their privacy so they would be closing the shutters, talk about being made to feel welcome. My caesar salad was not prepared at my table as stated, I asked for Bernaise sauce and was given Hollandaise, when I questioned it I was told that the kitchen did not have any Bernaise, did they think I would not notice the difference. And our waitress although very friendly had awful teeth and her uniform did not look clean. We had guests with us from Germany and it was my Birthday not a memorable evening. For the cost and prestige of the restaurant it sadly missed the mark.
Ordered wine by the bottle, used table wine glasses, were not switched out. Amuse-bouche (duck) tasty. Scallop appetizer x2 people, tasty but scallops over cooked. Raw osters great but no spoon for minioette. Steamed lobster perfect. Salmon slightly over cooked.
My husband has just recently stopped being a vegetarian after 8 years. He was really craving a good steak. We had an amazing dinner! The lobster cakes and vegetables that came with it were really good. We also ordered the fried cheesecake. I'm still dreaming about that!
I would recommend this place for special occasions. I liked the presentation and quality of their food the best. We had their scallop and bacon appetizer as well as the baked brie appetizer. Both were very delicious and came in a timely manner. For our main dish, my date had the rib eye and I had the seafood spaghettini. The rib eye was cooked and seasoned very well and they offered many options for how it should be cooked and any extra sides that could be added. I enjoyed the spaghettini, it had a lot of seafood pieces in it and it was overall pretty tasty. The service was good, but not exceptional. Overall, a very nice ambience and I enjoyed the meal at Ryan Duffy's.
My wife and I enjoyed our visit to Ryan Duffy's to celebrate our anniversary. The server was quite new to the restaurant but was very attentive and went our of her way to make our meal pleasant and relaxed. The food was delicious and they had a perfect, reasonably priced Malbec to go with my steak.
Was staying at the hotel for 3 nights and had dinner there all 3 nights. I have to say the first 2 dinners were outstanding but the 3rd one wasn't on par. I ordered the seafood bounty which I had fell in love with the first night but this time it wasn't nearly the same portion and choice of seafood. The waitress was very kind and offered me a side if lobster since it was non-existent in my order. Overall still a lovely restaurant and service, food must depend on the chef working that evening.
