Ruth's Chris Steak House - Clayton Ratings and Reviews
How the mighty have fallen in St Louis at least as far as Ruth's Chris is concerned. June 3rd, on my husband's birthday, it was spectacular and my review reflected that. 6 months later on December 16th it was one of the WORST meals I have ever had and not just at a Ruth's Chris, but ANYWHERE. Even the service was far below par as we waited on 6 occasions for more iced tea. To their credit, they did make sure my acorn squash soup was HOT, sadly it had literally no flavor. It tasted like pureed baby food garnished with crunchy undercooked squash dice and 4 pumpkin seeds. Utterly horrible--if you can't make soup, then at least BUY a quality pre-fab and mark it up massively like the way you mark up your 79 cents-a-pound baked potato to $12 per pound. The opposite was true of the mushroom couscous that was served so cold that I put it on my smoking hot steak plate to warm it up. It was ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE! There was an ocean's worth of SALT and enough garlic to wipe out a platoon of vampires and it was swimming in a pool of grease that I couldn't discern the origin to be olive oil or butter due to the un-effing-believable amount of garlic and salt. I did, however, use it to season the totally flavorless steak that had NO seasoning whatsoever--they just couldn't be bothered apparently so my husband and I used tiny bits of the chewy UNDERCOOKED fish-eye textured couscous to season the tasteless steaks. As for the steaks, you need a new butcher fellas. I've never had gristle in a filet ANYWHERE they were charging $59 for 11 oz of steak until last night. At Ruth's Chris. On my birthday. The creme brulee was mushy and grainy--everything it is NOT SUPPOSED TO BE. It was without a doubt the worst food and service I have EVER had at ANY Ruth Chris Steak house in the United States. But wait--there's MORE!! Luckily they seated us right NEXT to the waiter station so we were entertained by the shop talk all night because these guys couldn't stop yapping with each other.
This is such a great lunch spot; in my opinion it is completely under-utilized by the lunch crowd. My wife and I happened to be in the area, wanted a nice lunch, so Ruth's Chris was my first choice. Excellent service, great food. Yes, depending on what you get, it can cost more - but you definably get more.
I've eaten at Ruth Chris' Restaurants for years. First time I ever ate at a RC Restaurant was in Baltimore, MD. Then when we moved to TX we went to the restaurant in Dallas ...now that I'm living in St. Louis....the restaurant is in Clayton. All of the Ruth Chris' restaurants I've been to are the same....wonderful food, comfortable atmosphere and excellent service!
Have been to every Upscale Steak House in the US but never Ruth's Chris. Oh, what I have been missing. The food was incredible, our server (Miquel) was engaging and (I'd be remiss if I didn't acknowledge her) my date that evening - a woman I will marry someday - was charming, incomparable and as stunning as ever. Quite possibly a perfect evening...
Food was excellent; Service was very good; The music from the bar (very poor singer) went on way pass happy hour and ruined the atmoshere of excellent food during what should have been an outstanding dining experience. One other point , $25 for a glass of recent vintage Jordan Chadonnay was outrangeous. It was very ordinary. Wines by the glass needs work.
Not what we expected from this restaurant. We have never had a bad experience before. Upon arrival we had to wait twenty minutes past out reservation time. The waiter was nice but poorly trained. The steaks were great but the sides were not what we expected. To top it all off the valet couldn't find the car and when he did it was delivered with the alarm system going off. There are many other choices for steak in this town that are now superior.
We went to Ruth's Chris to sit on the patio, have dinner and listen to the band. It was great on all counts. We had a lovely September evening to sit on the patio. Two of us shared the seared ahi appetizer, then I had the Ruth's Chopped Salad, and my friend had the gumbo...all of which was delicious and beautifully presented. Also recommend the yummy bread. And of course everything was savored with several glasses of wine. The band was excellent, and provided lovely backdrop for a lovely evening.
Here is my honest feedback since you asked!
Very, Very disappointed with this Ruth's Chris in Clayton, MO. We are regular customers at Ruth's Chris in North Palm Beach, FL and visited this restaurant while we left FL for hurricane Irma.
The waiter didn't listen properly to each guests order so we got the wrong salads and side dishes. He wasn't attentive and missed a drink reorder. We weren't provided with serving utensils for the side dishes and it took forever to get them when we asked (should i have to ask in the first place?). The creamed spinach and the bread pudding were cold. I had asked for prepared mustard, he forgot, and when i reminded him, he brought some prepared mustard which he said was all they had. I asked him to go back and ask the chef for mustard powder and id make it myself - he finally brought me the mustard powder.
Most importantly no one, from the waiter to management, asked how out food was, something we always get at NPB RC.
I still tipped 20% on a $388 check because it wasn't all the waiters fault. Chances are ill never hear from the Restuarant, but i dont care since i will never ever come back to this Ruth's Chris in Clayton, MO.
At the prices you pay to eat here it seems that we would have the steaks prepared at the temperature we ordered them. But we did get angry when they served our guest "raw" chicken that was very under cooked.
No one took exception to our complaint but nor did they try to make amends for it.
All they did was take those plates and return the partially cut up food a little more cooked.
Guess presentation does not count.
We will not be back to this restaurant for any reason.
One question you ask is "would we recommend the restaurant". Not this one. we would encourage people to eat at Flemings or Mortons, however.
