Rustico - Ballston Ratings and Reviews
A friend and I ate there a few nights ago and really enjoyed the food. I had the beet salad (larger size) which was excellent and definitely big enough for an entree. My friend had the chicken pizza which was outstanding and very large. He had to take most of it home. We also tried the carrot hummus (excellent) and the risotto tots (also quite good). All in all I would recommend it and definitely go back again.
WE have dined at Rustico about a dozen times over several years and always enjoy it. The menu is varied and creative. Food quality excellent and well presented. Service always attentive and professonal. Nice decor. My only complaint is the noise level. It's always busy and the bar area is not well separated from dining, but nonetheless, it seems to be one of the noisier restaurants. Otherwise excellent.
The risotto tots that we ordered upon sitting down were quite good. But we noticed our table was wobbly and it was only fixed the third time we asked. We asked for bread after our appetizers arrived and that was also forgotten until we had to ask a second time. Adult beverages were delivered promptly, but the kitchen seemed just as excited to move quickly preparing our food, so the main courses were brought to our table when we were less than half finished with our appetizers (we had to wait for bread for a while). We refused the mains and asked that they be brought later. When our mains were brought back the chicken was quite dry, and the polenta so rich with butter that I couldn’t eat more than a few bites. My companion’s salad was soggy since the kitchen didn’t have the courtesy to make it again after waiting 15 minutes to bring it back to the table so the greens had just been soaking in the dressing for a while. The chocolate fudge cake was dry and lacking any character - could easily have come out of a box from Sysco.
I was in from out of town and suggested Rustico to my friend who lives around the corner since I used to frequent their Alexandria location when I lived in the area. We were both disappointed by our meal, and I doubt he will return. He has been making fun of my taste in restaurants for a full day.
My wife and I tried this out for the first time and we will go back.
We arrived just before the main restaurant opened, so we sat at a booth by the bar which was fine.
The service was swift and pleasant.
The chicken wings were really good.
The main courses were delicious.
This was our first visit to Rustico. The server was efficient but a bit rushed; he had many tables to cover and so was not as present as much as we would have liked (needed to flag him down for refills, etc). y companion had a burger and said it was fine, but nothing out of the ordinary. I had their "lunchbox special": soup, salad, and half sandwich. This is a good deal financially. The tomato bail soup was nice a chunk but a bit spicy for my palate. The toasted cheese with arugula, basil pesto, and tomato sandwich was excellent. The spring harvest salad high on frisee and low on other items. The cheese and risotto "tots" were wonderful! Would I return? Yes, if I lived or worked in the neighborhood. Not worth a special drive, though.
The menu on Open Table was different than the menu that i received. I was not sure if they change their menu seasonally.
Food was very salty. The hamburger and quinoa underneath the salmon loaded with salt. I was unable to eat the quinoa. I would not recommend this restaurant.
pulled pork eggs benedict was a disappointment--eggs overcooked, no real Hollandaise or BBQ sauce. But the risotto tots and the fried potatoes accompanying the eggs--really good! Nice cocktails, nice beers, a few nice things to eat. gigantic inside, some outdoor seating. Sunday at 1pm it was very quiet!
We went for brunch on a beautiful Saturday. The inside of the restaurant was almost empty, however the outside seating was almost full. The service was really slow and it took a long time for our food to arrive and to get refills of our drinks. The food was pretty good, especially the pizza. Beware the napkins if you are wearing black!
This is a good local restaurant. I wouldn't make a special trip to eat here. We ate outside on a gorgeous night. The view is of Ballston expanding, but it was fairly quiet on a Sunday. The server was efficient and friendly. There are hundreds of beers and a really bad wine list. Improve the wine list. The hummus and goat cheese appetizer was very good as was the beet salad. I added chicken to mine and it was a filling dinner. The pizzas are good and if you eat gluten free they do a chick pea crust. I would try that on my next visit.
The Gem salad was way over priced for what I received. It had just 3 or 4 asparagus stems in it (no tips), the dressing tasted like low quality store-bought, and otherwise just a mound of cheap gem lettuce. Sweetgreen salads are way better - higher quality ingredients and more diversity of ingredients - all for a third less. I will not return to Rustico.
Service was terrible. I was clear that the waiters were overwhelmed with way too many tables. They did their best to cover for each other but, we ended up waiting for such a long time for just about everything in the dining experience.
Food was upsetting. My mushroom pizza was supposed to have goat cheese on it and there was barely any-- maybe one "dollop" the size of a dime on the whole pizza. They were "out" of a lot of items.
All and all not impressive. No rush to go back.
