About Russia House Restaurant - Herndon
Set in historic Herndon, the Russia House Restaurant offers Russian hospitality and culinary excellence in all its details. The restaurant opened in July of 1992 by the friendly owners Ali and Homeyra Darugar, and together they created an atmosphere of aristocratic dining with classic cuisine, with the warm feeling that you are dining at your aristocratic grandmother’s table. Mrs. Darugar moved from Russia with her grandparents to Switzerland, where she learned to cook in her grandmother’s kitchen. She brought her great culinary talents here to the United States and created the exquisite menu and served as the head chef in the first few years the restaurant was opened. The restaurant features Russian, Continental and Georgian cuisine with a French flair.

Russia House Restaurant - Herndon Ratings and Reviews
My filet was delicious, very tender (cut it with a butter knife!) and cooked perfectly. The rest of my food was also quite good, except the Bearnaise was mildly cold. The dessert likely came out of a box with a couple dollops of spray whipped cream. My problem with Russia House was mostly with the service and organization of the restaurant. Clearly family-run, would it be asking too much for the servers to dress up a little? Looks like they were working too hard, could have spent some time on grooming and attire! Also, the menu was a bit dirty and the bar area was a mess. Our table was crowded over in the corner. All of this very much took away from the (mostly) delicious food.
The restaurant has a lot of charm and the service was excellent. The food was good but nothing special. The Chicken Kiev tended to be dry and the salmon was okay but not outstanding. My friend and I shared an apple strudel and the crust was just too heavy and it lacked flavor. I doubt that we'll go back which is disappointing because I really liked the place itself and the people were very nice.
After a not-so-great day, we needed something comforting. We couldn't have done better. Right from the start, we were embraced both figuratively and literally. The owners welcomed us like we've never experienced in other restaurants. The service and food exceeded expectations. If you think you don't like Russian food, check out the menu on their website. There is something for everyone. If you like good food and good service, give it a try.
Christmas Eve dinner was a mixed bag. There was a special Christmas menu, which we didn’t care for all that much compared to the regular menu. Our party had vegetarians, and the Christmas menu was lacking. The pasta dish they did have was $45. In fact, all the prices were high - higher even their normally high prices. As for the food, the pasta was not liked, and the duck was horrible. The filet mignon was good, as was the beef stroganoff. The service was OK, if not spectacular. It’s family, not professional wait staff. The chocolate mousse dessert most of us had was average. For us, the food didn’t equal the cost.
My husband & I always enjoy the food, service & atmosphere at The Russia House restaurant. We’ve never been disappointed & we’re self-described foodies. All of their dishes are excellent, the servers are knowledgeable & attentive, and they have an excellent wine list + excellent flavored Vodka shots.
I always enjoy eating here when in town. It’s great to be welcomed as a regular. My only disappointment was that I did not have the appetite to eat an entire meal this time. The soup and appetizer I had were, of course, excellent. I cannot say enough good things about this place. Highly recommended.
Our first time here although it's not far from our home. The dining room is quaint & quite charming. We don't like noisy restaurants--too hard to comfortably converse, but there were so few tables occupied it was almost too quiet. :) I imagine on a Friday or Saturday it'd be very different! It was a Sunday night so that is perhaps to be expected. The Owner attended all the tables. She's very friendly & very helpful--we enjoyed talking to her. The food was good although more pricey than we expected & not quite as exceptional as anticipated. My husband also had the seasonal pumpkin soup & that was outstanding! Despite some hesitancy, we'll likely return again.
We had not been to the new location just across the street from the old place. It is warm and inviting. The staff treat you as if you are a welcome guest in their home. They feature an excellent wine list. Everything we ate from appetizer to salad to entree to dessert was not just good, but extraordinary. Our host mentioned their regular wine dinners and we can’t wait to go back to try one.
My wife and I went to Russia House for our anniversary and had a great experience. The owner and his wife served us personally and the food and drinks were exceptional. Each item we ordered, from appetizers to entrees were expertly prepared and delicious. Considering the quality of the food, the prices were very reasonable. Highly recommended!
We were a group of seven for a business related dinner at the Russia House. We were seated in a quiet downstairs room. The server was very good. The infused vodka was quite interesting, and all of the party enjoyed their menu selections. We would do another dinner there.
We've been going to the Russia House for over 15 years and it is always a pleasure. The owners manage the restaurant and also serve as the servers and bring a distinctively old world charm and level of attention to your dining experience. And the food is simply delicious. I'd recommend them a hundred times over.
Additionally, downtown Herndon has been making a very nice transformation and itself has garnered nice ambiance.
Great evening at Russia House in Herndon. From the opening cocktails to desert everything was cooked to order, looked fantastic, and tasted great. I had a rack of lamb and my wife had scallops. Both were wonderful. The staff is wonderful and very helpful with the menu and service. Very nice meal.
