We enjoyed our meals at this small Philadelphia charmer. Menu is on the short side but there were good options on the evening we were there: 2 fish offerings, three meats, one pasta. We split the pasta as an appetizer and it was very good. I had the lamb loin (a bit overcooked/tough) and my husband had the veal chop, which he said was quite good. I had apple cake for dessert. It was very tasty but also small. Note: no liquor license so BYO.
Great BYOB in an old brownstone. The menu is very simple and limited, but the selections were sufficiently varied to appeal to most tastes. My wife and I shared a 3 cheese plate as an appetizer which was presented with cherry compote, dried apricots and honey. For entrees we had a vegetarian pot au feu Provençal style and a fluke on a bed of vegetables. The fluke was rolled into an attractive round cake shape for a creative presentation. Everything was delicious and we topped it all off with an apple sauce cake and coffee. Would definitely go back.
Unfortunately we were disappointed. The staff was pleasant, the menu promising and the decor warm and inviting. The food was pretty bad. The vegetarian entree was a few root vegetables swimming in broth, the chicken was over cooked, though the mushrooms were good. The dessert was skimpy but OK. For $23 plus per entree it was way overpriced! even the bread slices were tiny.
Quaint, neighborly restaurant in residential are of Philadelphia makes it feel like home.

Dishes were only interesting however, not amazing and some didn’t make sense at all in terms of blending things that didn’t work like salami and vinegar. Vegetarian option for main course was bland and portion skimpy.
Worth a try however as the menu changes daily.
As always, the quality of the food is exceptional, the product fresh and high quality, service is excellent, polite and knowledgeable staff, and atmosphere is quiet and reminds me of a quaint hidden restaurant in the Parisian Latin Quarter. Highly recommended
This meal was a real disappointment. Having read other's review's, I expected much more. Nothing we ate was remarkable, and some of it was downright bad, like the semolina gnocchi, which was a pile of mush covered in cheese. The vegetables accompanying our fish were raw Our appetizers left us with low expectations about what was to come, and sadly we were correct. We did not consider dessert based on the other 2 courses. Nobody came over to our table after we were served either course to check on how things were. This apathy could have been because we were a large party and they knew that 20% would be included automatically. I would not consider a return visit.
Disappointing experience. The dining room is excessively loud, which we knew from before so we tried a Sunday evening. The menu is limited and does not necessarily correspond to the website. The crepelle was mediocre enough so that I did not finish it. The fluke was too spicy and for good reason, the fish had almost no taste. The portions are on the small side and the pricing on the high end.
Wonderful menu with delicious, creative food. It's limited to choice of 4 appetisers, 4 mains and 4 desserts plus cheese, but we all had something different. Great Sunday night 3 course supper menu too for $38! Lovely 'homey' feel to restaurant and friendly staff. BYOB so even better.
We were disappointed in our meals at Russett. The appetizer portions were small (especially the pasta) and the mackerel on our salad was still raw in the middle (the server agreed it was undercooked and took it back to the kitchen to have it cooked longer). The entrees were all underwhelming- kind of bland and not balanced between proteins and accompaniments. The desserts were the best part.
Lovely and cozy spot with fresh and innovative food and wonderful service - one significant problem is the noise level and lack of background music to help shield - if not crowded and people speaking very quietly and respectful of others, it can be managed . On our most recent evening there we heard an entire conversation of a couple at least 10 feet away and soon Before we left, a group of friends were annoying the whole restaurant.
We were very disappointed with the food at Russet. We have eaten there several times in the past and always had very good experiences. This time, the greens in the salad were tired. My husband's pork chop was so raw, he had to send it back to the kitchen. When returned, it was better done, but still very tough - he spent as much time cutting away fat and gristle as he did eating. My thick swordfish steak was also undercooked in the center, so much so that I could not cut or eat that part of it. None of the food was particularly tasty or attractively presented. We expected much more of a highly-rated restaurant, especially in light of a BYOB check of over $100 for dinner for two. Doubt we will give it another try.
This place is definitely not worth the hype. The menu is very small. Our waiter was pretty rude and gave us attitude throughout the night. The meal was very expensive and not worth the food. Only benefit is that it's a BYOB, but you're definitely not saving yourself any money due to that. Restaurant is in a good location and the ambience is nice.
Dissaponting meal. Server made us feel like we were asking stupid questions. Swordfish entree was just okay - a bit salty and not that warm. The pumpkin dish our friends ordered was mediocre and had more mushrooms than pumpkins, and not a lot of flavor. I regretted taking our friends to this restaurant given all of the great options in Philly.
We were about 20 min late for our reservation due to multiple road closures for some type of regatta. We alerted the restaurant and they said we needed to be done within an hour or so. But when we got there we were treated warmly by the staff and not rushed at all. Menu is on the small side, but choices were well rounded enough that we each found something. All dishes were very good. And for us “salt fiends” there was actually salt on the table. Small thing but important for some of us. BYOB really helped with overall cost. Definitely will return,
I have to admit I was disappointed in Russet. I brought some guests from the UK and though the food was good, overall, one of the dishes (fish) was over-salted and found to be unpalatable by one of our guests. The service was really mediocre - waiter had the personality of a cinder block and was not really attentive or all that nice. The decor was actually kind of embarrassing and peculiar. Sigh. With all the fab dining options in the Rittenhouse area, I have to say that I won't be back.
I finally made it to Russet! It’s been on my “to try” list for years but just keep forgetting about it. Not on anyone’s hot list anymore, but clearly there is a reason it has survived. Now I know why and glad I finally made it! Cozy room (if it’s busy you want to be seated in the front room), loved my autumn lettuce starter and wonderful local hake with generous serving of deliciously charred broccoli rabe. Fresh baked artisan bread and byob with mellow, friendly staff and it was a winner of a Tuesday night. I’ll be back.
Restaurant has an intimate, old home feel. Wait staff had excellent teamwork. Fresh, eclectic menu with limited choices, not a bad thing. Had scallop tartar, which was creamy and refreshing. Fluke main course came in a delicious, rich cream sauce complimented by root vegetables, broccoli and cauliflower. Peach sorbet for dessert had a great texture and fresh peach flavor. Prices are quite reasonable.
Charming ambiance, skillful, unpretentious service, and beautiful, seasonal, locally sourced menu. Food was unfussy and deceptively simple, but with great depth of flavor and complexity. Every aspect of the presentation was restrained and perfectly judged. Just a wonderful experience from front to back. We will be back!
