Slow the day/time we were there (Sunday 4PM), but seems like a cool place that would be busy most weeknights. Great sushi and sashimi. Good options for maki as well. And the miso soup hit the spot, recovering from a few too many beers the day before. Server was maybe distracted/bored because we added to our order and she showed up with the wrong thing, twice. But the bill was accurate and it didn't take long to correct the order. Worth going again when it may be a bit more lively to really test ambiance (clean and hip seeming, but add ppl and we'll see).
The food was great! Nice selection.
No alcohol, but BYOB.
Our seat in the front window was a bit sterile, but the other tables in the restaurant were quite charming. I would have like to sit elsewhere.
They do have TV's but one usually only works, and its always some old school movie.
Very polite and welcoming staff. Food was good.
Our server was awesome. Runa is our favorite sushi restaurant in Chicago
My daughter and I both enjoyed the suggestions our waitperson brought us. The maki was very tasty and we both left full.
It was not very crowded for lunch so we were able to have a nice conversation while eating.
Great food. Great atmosphere.
Great food!
Great sushi, nice and quiet restaurant and it is BYOB
Food wasn't that great, but came quickly as it was not very busy. We sat outside on the patio and chairs were very uncomfortable. It was byob and they charge you $3 to apparently "uncork" your beer - which they didn't even touch or open for us which we thought was a little strange. They also charge for uncorking wine which makes sense, just thought the beer was strange.
Highly recommend the Runa, ocean maki and mango tango!
Cute outside seating area. Good sushi and love byob
So fresh and so delicious!
Great little find in the city. Had Pink
Dragon, lobster maki, dragon roll, and flaming Runa which was the concensus best of the group. Waitstaff was very courteous and helpful. Would definitely go back there in a heartbeat!
I frequent this place on off nights. The quality and variety of sushi is outstanding. Great neighborhood spot that I'm so happy is close to home! Can't beat the price either!
I went on a date here a couple weeks back and the place was absolutely packed. Definitely make a reservation if you want to eat here. There was only one server waiting on the entire restaurant and it seemed like he hated his job. He was really stressed and didn't take our order for 20+ minutes & then when we finally placed our order it took almost 45 minutes to get our food. The only
Thing that saves this place is the quality of the food. Nothing else. We almost got up and left, because we were there for over 2 and a half hours and didn't plan on doing so. Really disappointing because the foods great !
Sushi was excellent and the service was good. Ordered 3 of the specialty maki rolls and they were amazing. Loud and vibrant atmosphere on the weekend. Better for 4 or more than a date or 2 top on Friday or Saturday.
We informed our waiter that my girlfriend had a gluten allergy, we repeated multiple times and ordered based off their recommendations (sashimi). They served us a sashimi platter with eel sauce on one of the fish which we caught, the final straw was not catching the mushrooms marinated in sweet soy sauce that was served over the rice. After that we had to leave in order to get home before she got sick.
Halloween maki, Hawaiian crush and the mikkusu are all amazing choices!!! So fresh and tasty!
Best steamed gyoza in the city! Fresh sushi/sashimi specials are always top notch.
Fabulous restaurant! Best sushi I've had in a long time. Calm atmosphere and wonderful service!
Food and service were adequate and slightly above average. Nothing really stood out as special. But, if I'm ever in the neighborhood again and have a sushi craving, I would give it another try.
We love Runa. It's our go to place for sushi.
Good food, quiet enough to actually communicate with each other.
Favorite little place to stop in for lunch or dinner.
Really nice service, but the food was only ok. The Hawaiian role tasted like the wrap or the fish inside the wrap were old. They had an odd (almost off) taste and smell. The Alaskan roll and veggie rolls were ok, but nothing special. There was also a distinct smell to the place, which came across a little off. Again, really nice service, but probably won't go back.
We love coming back to Runa for the food and atmosphere.
The food and service is ALWAYS consistent! There are yummy options for us to eat as healthy (or not) as we want which is a big reason of why we go back. The only thing I used to be disappointed about was that they do not have a cucumber salad on their menu...until I tried the seaweed salad which is just as delicious and refreshing (and more nutritious when I'm trying to be). We started going to Runa's about 5 months ago and it's been the same staff which I think says a lot in the restaurant industry. This is absolutely our favorite Japanese/Sushi BYOB!
Our first impression of Runa was in being greeted by the very friendly staff at the great corner location of the restaurant. The newly built deck provides a nice outdoor seating area that's not cramped and gave us a chance to enjoy the summer evening in a great part of town. Service was attentive but unobtrusive. The sushi was well-prepared (my favorite was the eel maki, but they were all good).
Great place ! Hidden gem.
Way to saucy. What a shame. Everything was heavily sauced to the point you couldn't taste the subtlety of any of the fishes. Ramen was also pathetic attempt. Broth way under seasoned and they used spaghetti style noodles. Instant ramen would be better. Raw oysters were doused with soy. In japan, good sushi requires little sauce.
The food is good IT is a BYOB restaurant . The service is always slow Also when the restaurant is empty ! The Resturant business is based on food délivery !!!
The food is great over all !
It is quite noisy since there are 2 large tv in the main room ! The service is always slow !
Love this neighborhood sushi spot and I have never been disappointed.
Pros:
-good menu selection
-fast service
-some original menu items
-creative wall art painting
-BYOB
Cons:
-nothing is spectacular, just good
Great sushi. Great ambiance. BYOB is an added plus. Well done RUna, well done. adfadfadadf
Cute little sushi spot. The food was great, the service good. It's a little cramped but its a small space anyway. BYOB, moderate prices, the oyster special was perfect. Best part, free street parking on the block!
As other reviewers have written, the sushi (and food in general) is great. However, we were extremely disappointed in the service. We had to wait for a very long time for our food, and our waitress did not check on us at all either during the wait or after we got our food. We were also seated next to an extremely loud table, which ruined whatever was left of the mood.
This was our 1st visit to this sushi restaurant in wicker park. The food was awesome, the service was amazingly quick, and it's BYOB. Our experience was fantastic, and we will be returning.
We enjoy sushi about once a week and have dined at most of the best sushi restaurants in Chicago. Runa is such a pleasant surprise. Unlike some places, their specialties really are special. Try the super white tuna appetizer with the smokey ponzin sauce. The black pearl maki is also wonderful. A number of their dishes are spindled with a generous helping of black tobiko - which adds flavor and texture. We liked that they add just the right amount of "seasoning" to their dishes and don't let the seasoning overpower the fish. Our server really knew the dishes (better than most) and can offer some great suggestions based on one's taste. Go, just go, but be sure to BYO as they don't yet have a liquor license.
