About Rue 127
Located at 127 N. Carrollton Avenue on the Canal St. streetcar line, Rue 127 sits in the heart of historic Mid-City. We entertain from a renovated 19th century New Orleans style shotgun home.
Chef Ray Gruezke was born and raised in New Orleans. A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, Ray has worked in New York, Florida, and Baton Rouge. He recently returned to his hometown to work at Commanders Palace and as a sous chef at Le Foret working with Certified Master Chef James Corwell.
Desserts are created by Chef Joanna Palmer. Also a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, Joanna has served as a pastry chef for Commander's Palace and also worked at Cochon.

Food quality and service were good. Unfortunately portions were tiny except for the entrees. Appetizer n starter less than a mouthful each. Soup - 4 spoonful at best. No bread was served. Since it was New Year’s Eve, understand set menu and price. However, for the price n the occasion, how about party favors or simple decoration to celebrate the new year. Nothing festive at all. Don’t remember anyone wishing us ‘Happy New Year’. We were from out of town so it was a let down!
We've been here several times in the past and something was off this time. It seemed like they were understaffed. We waited 15-20 minutes for the table that was reserved and the bartender had to set up a table for us as there was no host working. Then, once we were seated, there was another 15-20 minute wait for a server to stop by. Then, two stopped by and there seemed to be quite a bit of confusion. They were very apologetic and I don't blame the servers as I think there were only two for the whole restaurant so it was management's problem. Once we ordered, there was another good wait between courses to the point where we weren't really hungry anymore by the time the entrees arrived. The food was not quite as great as usual but was still good, but kind of pricey for entrees. Decent but limited wine list by the glass and a nice atmosphere as usual. Just disappointed in the service.
The dinner was outstanding. We arrived at 5:30 pm and was immediately seated. The wait staffers were very attentive. Everyone enjoyed their meal. We had the flank steak & double cut pork chop. The only thing we didn’t care for was the fry bread. Even the sides were tasty.
Terrible service. Excellent food. We have loved Rue 127. However, tonight was not a good experience. We arrived a little early and were seated promptly with water. Then nothing. Finally after about ten minutes when no one had been by the table we went to the bar and asked the bartender/matre’d for a bottle of wine, which he finally served. Then finally he took our food order. There was only one other wait staff who came over a few minutes later to take our order which we told her we had already given to the bartender. There were only about five tables of people although two were a little large (eight and five). The bartender said that they had not expected a crowd but some people came in without reservations. Be prepared. The food was good as usual. However, the evening was dampened by the very poor service. We hope this was an anomaly since we have really loved this restaurant.
All the food was fantastic! Fabulous risotto (probably my favorite course), very tasty hangar steak, and wonderful fried cupcakes. Cocktails were also very good. Unfortunately, service this night was not great. We were seated in the part of the restaurant that appears to be a hallway. We were the only ones there, and we felt a little "out of sight, out of mind". Sat for long stretches with empty beverage glasses and within to order. We'll be back for the food, but may request a seat in the main dining area in hopes of more attentive service.
Always excellent service, cocktails, and creative, but not fussy, food for sophisticated dining. It’s our favorite place for special occasions and spur of the moment fine dining. Casual, but not sloppy, dress is acceptable at dinner. I admit to getting the scallops over and over again. Octopus and pate appetizers are excellent, but, as with the scallops, I get them again and again!
I did notice that the online menu needs a little updating.
It’s a small restaurant, so reservations are advised. Well worth the visit. Around $60-65/ person with drinks, one glass wine, appetizers and main course(no dessert).
It’s been a year since we’ve been here, so they’ve got a different menu than during our last time here. Nothing stood out on the menu and it had a definite Asian flair. The boudin balls and Foie Gras appetizers were good. I had the redfish in a Thai curry sauce - it was different but good (I liked it, my wife did not). She had butter lettuce salad (liked it) and the oyster appetizer as her entree (thought they were just ok). The service was good. We will return but will wait a while until they change their menu.
We have always loved this restaurant and have been many, many times- however that night (saints game) was not good. Our waitress was very nice, however she forgot a ton of things for our table- and there were only 3 of us at our table and only 3 tables there! One forgotten item was salad- i got mine but my other two guests did not and I heard them order salads, we never got our side orders (Brussel sprouts and cauliflower) and when their mussels came there was no broth. Then we asked for another bottle of wine. We waited about 10 minutes, and I signaled to the waitress to remind her about the wine and she came to us and said “oh ready for another bottle?” On top of that my chicken didn’t come out when the other entrees came out because the chicken had to cook longer? Yet i ordered it at the beginning of the meal. I have had the chicken before and it is always fabulous. This time it was dry and i just boxed it up. The whole dining experience was crazy and I think the waitress might have been drinking because every time I looked down the hall she was drinking something. Anyway, I still like the place but will remember to not go on a game night- you actually may want to think about closing on those nights. I have never written a bad review (and I am 56 years old) but I had to say something- thank you and sorry!
Second time here, first visit was great. This time the fry bread was uncooked and my daughter’s half chicken was way over salted-it was unedible. When complaining to server she said “yes the chef brines it” and proceeded to hand me the check. Don’t be cheap folks, empower your servers to comp poorly prepared food. i won’t be back as a result nor will i recommend.
The service was very spotty the night we were there. The restaurant was out of some basic menu items. It’s seemed to been an off night. Our past experiences there have been excellent, unfortunately this night was a disappointment. Our out of town guests were very disappointed.
3 couples for dinner - service was tough server wasnt very engaging or friendly for that matter.
Food made up for it .
Marrow with crostini not for everyone but it was for me.
Must try is fried chicken skins - trust me
Pigs feet and foraged mushroom risotto - on the fence with this one, was expecting something different
Gumbo - rich in color and flavor
we sampled all appetizers and mix of entrees, all very good.
a bit salty for everyone though - that seems to be a constant in NOLA
I had the pan seared duck with orange and wild rice - a bit over cooked from my liking and salty
Food was hit and miss. The corn fried ouster was too much breaded and the sauce too many different flavors. Butter salad was bland. The pork shoulder was hot spicy but not much depth in flavor. The scallops, the special of the Day were more flavorful. Had the bread pudding for dessert that was quite good. Restaurant was not busy at all but the service wasn’t very attentive.
I love the desserts here and was happy to see a seasonal version of one of my favorites--the fried cupcakes. The almond ricotta cake was also very good. The service was wonderful and fast. We had just come from a very slow and disappointing dinner at Toups and this made the night memorable.
We went on a Friday night to celebrate my husband's birthday. The place is small, and we were given a table in the hall-like section which is quite small and intimate. Every part of our meal was amazingly delicious. From the yeasty roll served with salty butter to the dessert. We split a butter lettuce salad that was given great crunch with the addition of pecans. We also split the octopus appetizer which was outstanding. I had the duck breast and ordered it medium rare. It was so juicy, and the blueberry sauce made it sing. My husband had the hanger steak also medium rare. He loved the steak, but didn't think the purple sticky rice did anything for the dish. For dessert we had the chocolate flourless cake. So yummy! It is so rare for us to enjoy every single dish that comes out of a kitchen. It has been years since we ate here, but we definitely will be back again soon. The service was pretty good, but sometimes we seemed to wait awhile before the waitress would check to see if we needed anything.
Service was great, - friendly people. Our appetizers and desserts were perfect. Main course was a little cold. The serving dish was hot but the temperature of the fish seemed like it had sat for a while. Loved the atmosphere and would not hesitate to try it again.
The place is small and loud, but very fun. The food shines through even though service was slow. Limited wine service but the risotto appetizer and fried cupcakes (yes, FRIED CUPCAKES) were absolutely delicious. Don't go expecting large portions though. If you can't stand paying upscale prices for smaller plates, then head elsewhere.
