We were returning from salmon fishing in Canada and stopped in Portsmouth for the night. Found Rudi’s on OT. Downtown Portsmouth was mobbed with tourists on Saturday night, so Rudi’s parking lot was a welcome sight. We arrived well before our reservation time, and the staff was very accommodating. They found us a good table. Very pleasant room with an outstanding pianist providing live music. The tables were full. The waitress was attentive. The caprese salad with local heirloom tomatoes was fine, but the lobster risotto was a major disappointment, gooey and tasteless. My friend’s haddock was crisp, but also generally lacked flavor. We skipped dessert. Perhaps we got them on a bad night.
Food and service was really good. Restaurant was quite noisy, however, making conversation difficult. I would return for the food though. 😊
Great wine food and service. Thanks Gina!
It was our first visit. I had the largest lamb chops I had ever seen and they were wonderful. All of our food was well prepared and enjoyable.
Have dined at Rudi's a half dozen times. Service is always excellent, and food is above average. Nice atmosphere and jazz brunch is especially enjoyable.
A quiet Wednesday evening with a friend. Very pleasant, friendly staff. Fine local fare. We had clam chowder and little neck clam appetizers. The entrees were scallops and lobster rolls. It was very good food, with clever presentations and tasty elements. I'd go there again. It's on the pricey side, but worth it.
Must say the menu under the new chef is underwhelming. Swordfish was small and dry. Twice baked potato was tiny. Lamb was tasty but very difficult to eat given the way it was served. Tomahawk was cumbersome and dealing with all the fat made enjoying it difficult
This was by far the worst dining experience I have ever had anywhere!!! We arrived on time after driving for 45 minutes for a special night out with my son who just returned from college and my sister. After we sat down the service by Karen was horrible. She took forever to get us drinks and our order. then we starting waiting and waiting. After ONE hour she very calmly told us that when she pressed the button to put the order in she must not have pressed it hard enough. Ok, great, then she says the food will be out in 10 minutes. 30 minutes later the food came out. My son ordered the ONLY vegetarian meal, ravioli and asparagus. There was 4 asparagus. Mine was a simple salad with chicken. the chicken was not cooked at all, and I could not eat it. they took it off the check. We got there at 7:30 and did not leave until almost 9:30.
The waittress could have cared less. And the place was almost empty. I really think they should try and sell to someplace like Nebo in Boston. We went there last night and it was fabulous.
Rudi's is incredibly over-rated. And, we thought they would comp the whole meal, as it was quite ridiculous. they comped the drinks and my undercooked chicken. We were all so stressed out when we left this place. Don't go if you want to have good service and good food. Wait in line somewhere else.
Food was good. Wine list was very good. Service a little surly. Rest rooms dirty. A mixed experience.
Great drinks and decent food, somewhat of a stuffy vibe although the restaurant is casual, the vibe is odd.
Service was very slow
Fantastic meal and drink options in a quiet romantic setting. The service was good but they are understaffed so be good to your waitstaff as they do have lots of tables to cover.
Our evening was as pleasant as it could have been. Our waiter was helpful, attentive and personable and engaging even though he was very busy. Our dinner was also excellent.
Always a great meal at Rudi’s. The lobster risotto, lobster roll, chowder, scallops and swordfish our party had were all devoured. We will be back!
This was the second time my wife and I have been to this restaurant. We love the food, atmosphere, and tasteful decorum.
A favorite of ours for many years. Excellent food and service! We ❤️ Rudi’s!
Service was good, food was great Asian pear martini was wonderful, great value
First time having brunch there. Eggs were cooked perfectly, home fries and bacon were good, but my moms fries were burnt. Dads French toast was delicious. Corned beef hash was horrible, fatty and greasy. So some great, some not so much. Service was perfect
Outstanding service and great food . Also the best bartender (Tom) in Portsmouth!
We had a lovely Sunday Brunch celebrating Father’s Day.
Rudi's is a great spot,in the building which formerly was the Metro,Rudi's is excellent. We were there for Sunday brunch.Mike the bartender made me a vodka mimosa, that honed my appetite to razor Sharpness. My veggie omelette was excellent with home fries and toast, the coffee was spot on,and a jazz duo provided easy listening music..Great service..What can I say,
Very nice restaurant, jazz piano for ambience
Food was delicious!
Wanted to try out the new chef/menu - didn’t disappoint (as sometimes happens) at all. Friendly, engaging, conscientious staff. Food was outstanding.......antipasto plate with interesting variety of meats/cheeses/condiments, scallops were great, swordfish was prepared perfectly.
We’ve been here numerous times, we’ll be back.
We’ve been to Rudi’s dozens of times and it has always been very good. We went just the other night, not having been in awhile and it was spectacular! I think the new chef has given Rudi’s new life and brought it up to and in competition with other fine restaurants in Portsmouth. I had a perfect jumbo shrimp cocktail ( from the old menu) but it had 3 very tasty sauces and no cocktail sauce.
I also had an app special which was soft shell crab with corn meal crust and wonderful sauce. My husband had a perfectly cooked swordfish. Everything was plated beautifully. Congratulations to the new chef!
Food and service were great. Dined very early, not busy yet, so it was nice and quite for conversation. Our first time at Rudi's and enjoyed the experience.
We love Rudi's for brunch! It is such a treat. The $5 bloody mary's are great! The music and ambience are nice. I always enjoy my salmon eggs Benedict. Kids and adults are always happy. We can't wait to go back!
Two of us went for dinner on a Saturday night. We were seated right away, no wait at all. The noise level was louder than I remembered from our last visit. The food was cooked to perfection could not have been better. The service was just great. All in all a lovely evening.
Don’t let the noise level comment put you off, the is a very nice restaurant and we will be back.
Our reservation was for 7 people and were seated promptly. The wait staff was attentive without hovering. Everyone enjoyed their entrees, especially the salmon.
We would definitely return on our next visit to Portsmouth.
We were celebrating a birthday and the food was great and diverse enough for everyone in our party. The waiter was also very attentive. Fun time
We had dinner this past weekend at Rudi’s for a friends 40th. The food was very good. We especially liked the chicken skewer appetizer. Our one complaint however was the service. Our waitress was so rude and gave our group an attitude the whole time. I was disappointed that there is mandatory gratituty added to the bill. Seems to me that in the case of this waitress, there is no pressure to be polite since gratuity is automatic. Everyone enjoyed their food though!
We enjoyed a romantic dinner at Rudi's. The live piano music made it special. The food was excellent.
Dreadful is a word I would use to describe this experience. The server was impatient and dismissive, the food was not good and it was just not a very nice place. They do have free parking though, so there's that.
Incredible food cooked perfectly! Our server was exceptional. Good drinks
We checked this place out because of the happy hour. Good drink specials and the bartender had personality. The people sitting around us were great. You could tell it was a local go-to for HH. Stayed for dinner which was service with an attitude and satisfactory food. No wow factor. Would prob go back for HH but never for dinner.
The food was excellent and the restaurant itself was beautiful. The bathroom didn’t look like it belonged at all.
Our friends arrived about 20 minutes before us, the second they sat down they were asked what they wanted to drink, which they asked for a minute to look at the menu. The waitress did not come back until 20 minutes later when we arrived, and she did the same thing yet failing to ask our friends who have been sitting there what they wanted while we browsed. About 15 minutes later (so now we’ve in total been here about 45 minutes) our drinks come and before we could say we were ready to order, the waitress took off and ultimately completely disappeared for a good half hour. Between the time of us sitting down and our food finally arriving at our table it’s was about an hour and a half at which point I had to get up and go to the bar to simply get us water as we were incredible parched since having not been offered any, the waitress arrived as I was pouring our group water and didn’t even acknowledge that I was doing her job!! The food was mediocre at best, beef was cooked okay however I was given raw potatoes and asparagus. For the fact that a group of 4 spent $300 the food and service should have been a lot different. I also found it unprofessional that at a nicer restaurant all the waitstaff was wearing jeans. Sloppy staff, sloppy service, not that great food. Will not be returning to this one, which is unfortunate it seemed like it would be a nice place.
We dine at Rudi's fairly often - it always meets our expectations, food, service and selections.
The host was not very professional. When we first arrived he said the table he was going to sit us at (we had made a reservation) still had people at it. Then he jumbled about what to do next. Then when we were seated he didn't give us menus. When another waitress saw this she asked him to give us some. He gave us food menus but then forgot the drink menus. So we had to ask and he responded in a tone that seemed almost annoyed that we asked for it. Also, our waitress didn't share th specials with us. We know there were some because we overheard them being shared with other tables after we had ordered. Otherwise, the service was good and the food was delicious. There was great jazz music playing. The bathrooms could use a renovation but the rest of the venue is beautiful.
I have been to Rudi's on several occasions and the food and service never fail to please. I do have to say that it seemed particularly noisy for dinner last Saturday evening. I arranged dinner for a large party of close friends and it was difficult to have a conversation without shouting to the people at the other end of the table. That said, on other visits to Rudi's it has been much quieter... maybe this was just a one time event. Let's hope so...
