Roy's Waikoloa Bar & Grill
We have enjoyed Roy’s restaurants for as long as they have been around. This restaurant needs a major rehab if it’s going to be one of his places. The food was mediocre at best. The ribs were mostly fat. The fish was overcooked. The sushi was fair. The egg roll was greasy. The chocolate soufflé was as amazing as usual, though. The prices are outrageous-truly, especially considering the quality of the cooking. Let’s talk about ambiance. We might as well have been in a a rural desert in any state other than Hawaii. There wasn’t one thing in the building that made us feel like we were in Hawaii. Other than the soufflé, the other good aspect was the service. Nice people here but the management needs to eat hear and think about how to make it a Roy’s experience.
Always consistent no matter which restaurant we’ve been to. Food and service are outstanding.
We go to Roy’s every year to celebrate my birthday. One thing I can say is that the prices keep going up but the quality of the food is not keeping pace. My husband & I shared the crab cakes appetizer. He had Da Kine Combo & I had the scallops for entree. There were 2 small crab cakes for $26. Da Kine combo & the scallops were around $55 each. There were 4 scallops w/crab on top, a few pieces of bok choy, a scoop of rice. The food tasted fine, but not spectacular for the price. The real reason we go there for my birthday is the chocolate soufflé. That was the best part of the meal. So I am disappointed with the value. Service was very good, very attentive wait staff.
We loved Roy’s! The food was really good, I had a white fish and my husband went with the fillet both were great! They do a 4 course meal for kids which was so cute and perfect! All kid friendly foods and it kept our son busy throughout the whole dinner. This was the best place we’ve been to on the island all week!
Everything was superb! Beginning with the food. We ordered the Fixe Pixe which is a 3 course meal offered during Aloha (Happy) Hour. Our appetizer was the baby back ribs which were meaty, tender, and full of flavor. One of the best baby back ribs that I have ever tasted. Our entree was the Macnut crusted fish with lobster sauce which was excellent and for dessert, we have a molten lava cake. Will definitely dine here again as the staff are friendly and treated us like family.
Good food and great service. We have eaten here several times and have never been disappointed. It is pricy but worth it for a special occasion.
We ordered a bottle of the Pinot Nior that Roy put his name on. Worst wine we ever had. It had a very strange color.
I ordered the peppered Tuna entree. I’ve always had tuna on the rare side. Lightly seared. The waiter told us it’s a very thick cut and it is recommended to order it medium rare. It was awful! Very overcooked. This was our first time at the restaurant. It will be our last.
Food and service were outstanding. We both ordered the prix fixe Aloha hour special.
Eaten here a number of times. Food was amazing. Service was outstanding. We had a 7pm reservation and arrived on-time. Waited 15 minutes to be seated. A couple groups arrived after us and were seated before us, which was irritating. The hostess was nice, but was disorganized and even though I had given her our name when we arrived, she later asked me if I was part of a different party. Poor arrival experience. The wait staff and food made up for it.
Not impressed with the foodstuff all..and not even close to being worth the price...Roy’s used to be great...it’s lost it quality and flare
The service was substandard, especially for a high-priced restaurant. The server was gruff, and came to the table 3 different times to take our order but then left midway each time. We had an appetizer and 2 entrees, 1 beer and 1 iced tea. The food was not very good. The price was $155 before tax. I expect much more for that amount of money. Not worth it. Never again.
I've been to several locations for Roy's and they've all been wonderful. I will caution that the food is yummy, but incredibly rich. Lots of sauces.
The Seafood at Roy’s is outstanding. We’ve never had a bad meal there. The staff are attentive, very polite and extremely helpful. Thanks again Roy’s!
Seriously overrated and overpriced food; don’t bother! Such a shame when $50 entrees are mediocre at best.
Sat next to bar and was very very loud for first 30 minutes... food great... service below standard
Have always liked Roy’s but this visit was below standards for this restaurant
Lurch was one of the best waiters we’ve ever had. The food was perfect. Steaks cooked to order! The chocolate mousse cake is the best dessert in the world!
Overall, just okay — we were seated late despite arriving timely and did not get requested seat option with no acknowledgement or rationale why but when prompted, informed that seat not available at that time but could have been notified or offered option to wait for availability before being seated — The water view table was the main reason for selecting the restaurant for a special birthday celebration.
Great food, friendly service, pricey and noisy. The pineapple upside down cake was amazing!
Excellent food, excellent waiter and service. I highly recommend this restaurant.
It was a nice evening with friends
The lady who sat us and the man who made sure we had water and utensils were good. Our waiter was very condescending and disappointing. We asked for guidance on the appetizers regarding portion size. His response was noncommittal. He never asked how our appetizers were. We left without ordering entrees.
My husband and I like Roy’s so much we ate here twice in one week. The complimentary edamame sets the tone. The macadamia crusted fish with the butter sauce and lobster sauce is delicious. They were even able to substitute mushrooms for the carbohydrate. Wait staff is very helpful.
The decor was very plain . They were out of several things we wanted. We both did have orders which were tiny, albeit it tasty but my butterfish was drenched in soy sauce and was super salty
Very very noisy. Especially a screaming child. We asked to be moved and they were very accommodating. A bit pricy.
Wonderful food served at each course... Waiter was very attentive and the restaurant’s ambiance was beautiful....
I have dined at at least 6 other Roy’s over the last 20 years (Maui, Hono, Palm Desert, Anaheim, Orlando, San Diego). They are always consistently good. This particular one in Waikoloa has the ambiance of a Holiday Inn, terrible overpriced food, and less than stellar service. We read a few reviews with similar stories to this, and almost did not bother to go. Take my advice, skip this location.
Consistently good food and service. The three course Prix fixe menu is great. Had the mongchong Chinese style which was excellent.
Had coupon for free soufflé for up to 4 people. We had 3 in our party and waiter only placed an order for 2 when we had 3 in our party! Why would he do that and then not ask my sister what she wanted for dessert? Takes 45 minutes to prepare so she got stuck with a different less expensive dessert since didn’t make sense to have her wait 45 minutes and we are done. Ruined an otherwise nice dinner.
Very good food reasonably priced. Nouse factor was annoyingly high due to an unruly child, not the restaurants fault but it did detract from the evening. Service was inconsistent, some that we interacted with were excellent but our bill came and we were not offered dessert or coffee. We would have ordered both but decided against it.
Our server was great. She gave us good tips on what good. I had mahi nahi which was good. My wife had prime rib it was ok. The potatoe was under cooked. The meat seasoned ok. 4 stars mostly for the staff. Manager didnt seem to care too.kuch when I told him the prime rib dinner was sub par
We have been to many Roy’s locations including this one previously. This was the first time that I couldn’t rate it 5 star. While my wife’s scallops were excellent, my filet left a great deal to be desired. Service was slow as well! We dined at Tommy Bahama’s a few nights earlier and it was 5 Star all the way.
Service was excellent. Above and beyond.
But the food was a disappointment. We have eaten at many Roy's so our expectations were high.
For the cost of the meal, the food should have been better. The main entrees were good. But the
appetizers and desserts were not. Most disappointing of all was the Chocolate molten cake was over
cooked and very dry.
We had our best meal on the Big Island here. The butterfish is outstanding and the ahi tuna is great. The chocolate soufflé is delicious. The service was perfect with just the right amount of attention.
Excellent food, service and ambiance.
It was a special celebration for us - and the staff helped make it a night to remember ! Mahalo !
Have been to several Roy's in Hawaii and in several mainland states. I would have to say this is the most disappointing experience. Our server was wonderful however the food and price for the food was disappointing. It seems like the prices have gone up quite a bit while the value is not there. If I was asked if someone should go to Roy's I would have to say know. Could probably just go to a local Mom and Pop for half the price and better food.
Pod service and tasty food!
Service and food excellent. The way the servers, waitstaff, and cleaners operate is like a opera.
Always go to Roy’s while at the Mauna Kea. For the first time ever, the food was not as good. My husband was ill afterward. Not saying to avoid this restaurant but definitely believe this was an off night.
Need better vegetarian options. A vegetarian item should be a tasty dish, not an afterthought
A classic!
