Roy's Waikiki Ratings and Reviews
We had been to the Roy’s on Maui on a previous trip to Hawaii and enjoyed it immensely. Compared to that experience the Roy’s at Waikiki was a disappointment. Despite the upscale decor and effort to create a luxurious dining experience, the large tourist crowd and boisterous environment makes for a noisy and somewhat distracting meal.
As for the food, quite frankly it was rather bland. A Caesar salad was actually a tossed salad and quite ordinary. The Chinese spring rolls had a spicy dipping sauce but the spring rolls themselves needed more flavor. Macadamia crusted mahi-mahi was unremarkable and the steamed opa also was on the bland side. Desserts were the star of the show but it’s never a good sign if the best part of the meal is the sweet course which is hard to screw up in the first place.
As for service, it was efficient but not necessarily in a good way. The server was a bit brusque and not entirely friendly.
The next time we are in Honolulu we will try some places not as obvious. At the risk of using a cliche, Roy’s appears to have become a victim of it’s own success.
Went there for Restaurant Week. Special menu was excellent. Kampachi appetizer was really good, would buy it as a entrée. Tried the Lamb Shank, it was fantastic, great flavor, fall off the bone tender. Desert was a good finish. Service by Lani made the experience complete. She was attentive and went out her way to make the dining experience special.
Celebrated a friend’s birthday here. Roy’s food is consistently well prepared. Loved the zucchini in bao bun appetizer. 3 course vegan meal for $45 - delicious butter lettuce salad, excellent and filling hearts of palm filled pasta entree, kiwi dessert a bit too sweet for my taste. You do have to ask for the vegan menu. Excellent, upbeat service. Casual atmosphere, quite noisy but still a good all around choice for anything but a serious business meeting.
Made a reservation before going, highly recommend this as it is very popular. Greated warmly and as I had arrived a bit early they offered the bar while we waited. we were seated promptly and taken care of very well. The service throughout the night was excellent. The staff must communicate very well as we were never asked twice about anything and never left waiting. we ordered the Roy special with the wine; highly recommend this especially if you have never tried pairing wines to the different courses of a meal; they do it for you and they do it well. I had the macadamia tuna; huge portion and excellent. The only drawback is the restaurant is noisy; I could hear my table but there was a lot of energy in the restaurant and tis could bother older people with hearing aids. Would definitely go back!
Since my husband and I met we have been going to this Roy’s every year to celebrate my husband’s birthday. The service is the best, we love their food, and the soufflé is my absolute favorite dessert. Their staff is the most professional I have ever encountered. We will be back!
My husband enjoyed a dish with 3 fish items- a salmon, butterfish, and mahi mahi. Delicious!
You know a restaurant has to be great (*disclaimer - I already knew Roy's was a fabulous restaurant) when you see Iron Chef/Food Network icon Chef Robert Irvine walk in to have dinner!!
The food and drinks were - as always - first class ! !
The servers were very friendly.
I highly recommend the Butterfish - it melts in your mouth
A Taste of Hawaii ??
This is where you will find food and flavors from various ethnic groups living in Hawaii. The standout was the BBQ ribs so tender that the meat was falling off the bones and the sauce finger licken good. Many of the other dishes were disappointing. Crab cakes tasted old, the trio of fish (black cod, salmon, and mahi-mahi) were covered in an overpowering sauce that made it difficult to taste the delicate flavors of the fish. Having read about lettuce being grown and Harvested on the Islands, I was looking forward to tasting the delicate flavors of the butter lettuce. Sadly, the dressing was overpowering. Portions are huge and I made the mistake of ordering the chocolate soufflé aka Lava cake?? Too heavy. Maybe mango, lemon or pineapple soufflé or a sorbet would be more to my taste. Wait staff very attentive .
Was my first time to this one I live in San Francisco been there a lot, the Hawaii one is really much nicer with a better menu and not as noisy. The staff where FABULOUS and got a chance to meet the Manager she was just lovely so personable, what a delightfully wonderful woman
My husband and I were there early for our 7:15pm reservation and chose to be seated outdoors in a side area of quiet and pleasant surroundings. The service was not exquisite as in the Maui Roy's at Ka'ananapali Golf Course, as, I am comparing the two. The drink was sub par, unlike the one served in Maui, which was above common and most assuredly wonderful, I had ordered the Pina colada, and my husband the virgin one. I could go on and on but the food too was sub par in comparison to Maui's Roy's. Volume does not make up for quality is all I can say. It saddened me that the commercialism had the affect it had on such a wonderful operation.
Roy’s Waikiki did everything we asked in our OpenTable request, we had a wonderful meal at a quiet table. We were drawn in by the early bird prix fixe menu, and were delighted with the poke appetizer, steak and scampi entree and the chocolate soufflé dessert!
Despite having a reservation, we had to wait 15 min for a table. Food is not superb, just Asian fusion.
They give you a welcoming free edamame with a spicy peanut sauce. Your palate gets numb after eating this. You just want to drink more and more. The old trick of cheap pubs. Extra salt or extra spice to sell more alcohol.
There is plenty of nice places in Hawaii, don’t waste your money at Roy’s
Food was great of course. One thing that was particularly good was the miso butterfish with wasabi sauce. I would definitely recommend it (I had it in the beachwalk trio). I think the best part of our meal though was the service. Our waiter was very energetic and seemed excited to be doing his job which isn’t always the case. The wait staff in general were also very helpful and were very attentive to us. They were even nice enough to take our picture multiple times with a smile on their face.
Service was fantastic as always. Our waiter, Dean, was Checking in often and keeping drinks filled. Dean had extensive knowledge of the menu. The food is always spectacular. Spare ribs and escargot appetizers are both quite filling and delicious. Be prepared, you get four or five ribs ! The beach walk trio was a superb choice. Small portions of salmon, Butterfish and mahi-mahi. The pickled daikon with the salmon was one of the best things I've ever tasted !! All three pieces were cooked perfectly.
