Roy's Waikiki Ratings and Reviews
We really enjoyed our dinner at Roy’s. Highlights included the Szechuan bbq baby back ribs, lemon pop roll and macadamia crusted mahi-mahi. The upside down pineapple cake which we ordered for dessert was a bit too cloyingly sweet for our taste. Preferred the hot chocolate soufflé and coconut gelato which were both perfect. The service here was top notch and contributed to an outstanding experience. Best dining experiences this trip to Honolulu include Roy’s and Nobu - highly recommend both.
My wife introduced me to Roy's while dating and been a fan ever since. Have eaten at several around the U.S. and Roy's at Waikiki continues to set and hold a high bar for great service and delicious food. Gaby and team were great! We had the poke trio, Hawaiian tomato and goat cheese salad, and the Okinawan sweet potato bisque with goat cheese for starters. Our entrees were the miso and Spanish octopus. All were fantastic! Well worth it for a date dinner or gathering of friends!
My husband and I walked in without a reservation and they seated us by the chefs and cooks. At first we weren’t too excited about our seats, but we soon enjoyed watching the action going on in the kitchen.
The waiters knew the menu well helping us navigate our choices and the bus boy never had us lacking for drinks.
We had been to Roy’s in Las Vegas so our expectations weren’t set too high coming here. We expected an average chain restaurant at best. The Roy’s in Waikiki not only satisfied our expectations but far exceeded them.
The food here is made with local ingredients which you immediately taste when eating their fish and seafood. We found the flavors of cuisine delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed everything. The only item we found lacking were my husband’s short ribs. Which tasted average but not bad.
Our favorite part of our dining experience here was meeting the executive chef Jason Ichiki and chatting with him about Roy’s cuisine and restaurants in Hawaii. We found out the restaurants in Hawaii are individually owned unlike the restaurants on the mainland. My husband and I think this is the reason for the difference in food quality at the Roy’s in Waikiki.
Anytime we come back to Waikiki we plan to stop in at Roy’s and enjoy the food and company. Thanks Jason!
If our waiter wasn't so nice, my experience would have been SO much worse. Most of the appetizers we were interested in were deep fried, so we ordered a vegetarian sushi roll and it was actually delicious! They need to open a Roy's vegetarian sushi place. I'm sure it would blow away that veggie sushi chain in NYC, which isn't too bad.
Next was the salad. I was craving some greens, but every salad had creamy weird dressings and mixed bitter lettuce, so I ordered just romaine lettuce with oil and vinegar. Not surprising, the balsamic vinegar was a pretty cheap brand and tasted like bad vinegar, not full flavored balsamic the way it should be. Salad was a waste of time and money.
Main course was seared Ahi, but I asked for it medium rare (for some reason I wasn't in the raw mood), but it came out well done. The cajun seasoning was flavorless, and the dipping sauces were beyond terrible. The waiter apologized and they remade the dish seared. I attempted to try their citrus ponzu for dipping, and it was also one of the worst asian sauces I've ever had.
The 2nd best thing of the night was the chocolate souffle, but it's really hard to mess that up.
My friend ordered the prix fixe vegan menu. HIs first course was something swimming in curry that you could smell throughout the entire restaurant. Probably down the whole block. He said it was ok, but would have been nice if it wasn't overpowered by that flavor.
His main dish was a very odd looking mushroom concoction which he said was really good. And he loved his desert which was supposed to be key lime pie, but was some wine glass filled with fruit mousse and other ingredients.
I ate at the Roy's in Woodland Hills, CA a few times, and it's always been hit or miss. I was hoping the Hawaiian location would be an improvement, but I was let down.
As a vegan I have dining challenges as you might expect. Roy’s has a 3 course vegan menu, but I chose to order off the regular menu because I don’t eat desert, which was the 3rd course. Our waiter recommended the vegan roll which was so amazing my husband, who is not vegan, loved it. Our waiter also recommended the tofu-yaki which is an appetizer, with a side of rice as my entree. Sheer perfection! My husband’s meal was wonderful also. Roy’s is always exactly as you would expect, fabulous!
We have eaten at Roy’s Waikiki several times and love the food and service, HOWEVER, the sound level, particularly screaming children and a mid-eastern woman at the next table with the most horrible perfume caused everyone around us discomfort and my headache. Her male companion was demanding the grill be cleaned to eliminate any pork residue that might offend their religious requirements. We would love to eat there next week, but only after checking out the noise level first.
It was my boyfriend’s birthday and I wanted to go to a place with excellent food and customer service. Once again Roy’s Waikiki provided us with an amazing night of wonderful food and service. All appetizers, main entrées, and desserts were cooked to perfection and I also have to add beautiful presentation. We will definitely come back again and for as many special occasions we can.
