Roy's Tampa Ratings and Reviews
Dined here on a Wednesday evening, which was a night that the restaurant was not overly busy. We were a group of four and received the WORST service possible. Each diner was handed a different menu, water glasses were not refilled for 30 minutes, wine order was missed, food took over 60 minutes to arrive from the time we placed our order. Combination of service hiccups between the host stand, server, bar staff, and kitchen. Would not recommend given all of the other restaurant options in the area and in Greater Tampa.
We have been going to Roy's for years and I was especially thankful when Roy's in Tampa reopened for lunch so that I could schedule business luncheons. My wife and I still go there for dinner whenever possible as it is our favorite restaurant. We also go to Roy's in any other city that we can find it. Always a great meal and service.
Maybe it was an off night but everything was bad. Hostess was nice but then listened to her berate another hostess for going home sick. Unprofessional to do at the hostess station. Sat about 5 mins after reservation time. No waiter came by. After 10 mins I grabbed a manager that was walking by. Ordered a Mai Tai. It came but tasted horrible. Like it had soy sauce in it. Server was nice and covering for whoever was supposed to have our section. Ordered our food. Waiter had to come back because they were out if chicken. My bf had to change his order. Food came, cooked well but my filet had this terrible black sauce all over it. So incredibly over salty I had to cut off the outside of my steak to eat it. In addition, it was freezing in there. There must have been a heating issue since there were room heaters placed in different areas. Overall a bad experience especially at that price point. We won't be going back.
To start with the restaurant was very cold.. This was one of those cold days we had in Jan and at 7 pm it felt warmer outside than in.. We had their pot stickers which were ok, little over cooked so the outside was tough. We also ordered the Miso soup. This was really bad. Extremely salty like they had put in a frozen broth but did not add enough water. The waitress tried to help by bringing out more water to pour in but it just was not very good. They did take that off. One of the rolls we had was good, had coconut in it. Also the chocolate lava desert was good.. The traditional $9 bottle of wine that they sold for $32 was ok as well. I went into the bathroom around 7:30 and the trash cans were flowing over into the floor with paper towels..
All and all it was an ok experience, staff was very nice, but the food was not worth it and their was no real pride in the restaurant. Very "big chain" kind of feeling.. Call it an expensive McDonalds..
It was freezing inside. Almost like being out in the 50 degree temp. Management made up story that heating system was being repaired. It got colder by the minute. My seafood platter was not worth the price. The others liked their food but again overpriced. Our server did a good job of trying to make light of the situation as our hands were freezing. They should have closed
The restaurant was bone chilling cold. The food tasted like you could get it at a basic strip mall restaurant for $4.00. To my understanding Roy’s is known for the sushi but when I tried to order it I was advised it is not available until dinner. That does not make any sense. There are too many other great restaurants located within a block of Roy’s to suffer through another poor experience. I will never return.
Party of 5, new year’s eve, lot of people dining out, so we were prepared for possible issues. We arrived early, our table was ready and we were seated immediately. Service was excellent, food was excellent, and served with no delays. There was constant monitoring from managers. In general a wonderful experience.
I had a great experience. I was there for dinner on 12/31 to celebrate NYE prior to going out to the Westin Hotel later that evening. The food was well prepared with so much attention to the food’s presentation. The lobster bisque soup was amazing and the chocolate soufflé was incredible. I will definitely return with my man!!!
We love Roy's. Been there many times. Service wasn't up to usual standards. Made reservations, had a short wait for a table so we opted for an open table in the bar. No problem. Had I known the service was going to be not a priority we would have waited for table. Server was very distracted and not attentive at all to taking care of us. Took nearly 20 minutes to get soup. Oh well, it was good. Next the "canoe for two" was brought to the table by another server. Unfortunately, there were no plates. Our server never returned. I flagged down yet another server as ours seemed to be distracted by a personal visitor. Got plates finally. For the most part it was very, very good. The exception being the Waygu Filet Yakitori. Severely over cooked (think shoe leather). Still no server to check on us although he was in sight conversing with his "visitor". Wife finished her wine and I finished my ice tea, mid meal with still no follow up by server. The bartender sensed my frustration and empty glasses and offered to bring us refills. Still no server. Disappointed in service and very glad we weren't entertaining this evening as I would have embarrassed (but would have vocalized it at the time). Server finally brought check and for the very first time asked how was our meal. I simply said fine as I was done but surely he should have known his service was lacking. My wife tipped out at 15% while I was in the washroom (he's fortunate). Little did he know that she's a 25-30% tipper during the holidays.
I wanted to take my mother (70+) to Roy’s for a special Christmas Dinner. The whole night was an epic fail. When we arrived promptly at 7pm for our reservation, we were told they were running 30 min behind schedule. There were no seats for waiting. We went to the bar where I had to find a bar stool for my mother while I stood for 1h 15min. I checked with the hostess twice who kept saying 10 more minutes. We were finally seated at 8:15pm. We would have left but it was Christmas and we feared not getting a reservation or getting in anywhere else.
Dinner was from a fixed, very limited menu, and some choices we were interested in were already sold out. The wait was incredibly long for everything we ordered. From drinks, to appetizer to dinner, there was approx. 40 min lapses in between. Our apps came out at 8:55pm.
Food was mediocre and overpriced. My salad was wilted, tasteless and I was not offered fresh ground pepper. My entree the ahi tuna was rare as ordered but had a sauce so heavy on wasabi, it had to be scraped off to be edible. We asked for our desserts to go, and for our bill when our entrees arrived. After finishing our entrees and waiting another 20-30 min, still no desserts or bill.
We finally took our bill up to the hostess stand and asked for a manager. He/she never arrived. Our server was able to remove the desserts from our bill, we payed and left.
Our server was very apologetic and tried to make up for the restaurants shortcomings. A manager who we spoke to after the apps took so long apologized and said many people had called in sick - that was it. We felt the whole situation wasn’t handled properly lacking customer service. We will never return to Roy’s or recommend it to our friends.
We came here from Philadelphia for Xmas dinner with family and had a reservation for 7pm and checked in and were told they were running behind 20 min when we checked back at 20 min they told us it would be 30 more minutes. We did not get seated until 8pm. There was no apologies from anyone and no compensation like a free drink or something. Very poor management. No point in making a reservation.
Even though we had a reservation we had to wait for an hour (could be justifiable since it was Christmas Eve).
Realized that there was only one busboy that night; while on occasions like this you need at least 3 people cleaning tables. (there were multiple empty undone tables while people were waiting in the front to be seated)
Overall appetizers & food were very tasty!
Wish I could review the food, we planned for this meal well in advance.
This horrible experience ruined our December 25, 2017 belated Anniversary/Christmas meal. I made reservations a month in advance for Christmas dinner, two days before Roy's calls me to confirm I will be there as they have many reservations for the Holiday. I assured them we would be there and they said they would be ready for us.
We arrived 15 minutes early and hostess acknowledged our reservation and assured me they would get me at the bar. While there a group of five walked in and was told 45 minute wait without reservations. After 30 minutes and 3 drinks that cost $50 I checked back with hostess who told me " I apologize and will seat you first, within 10 minutes". I then watched her seat 3-4 other tables including the group who walked in when we arrived. We finally left after waiting 30 more minutes. This was 1.5 hours after our arrival and 1.25 hours after our designated reservation time.
(Reminder: THEY CALLED ME TO MAKE SURE I WOULD NOT STAND THEM UP!)
Needless to say on Christmas night we are not finding a decent restaurant with availability so ended up at Hotel for special dinner. Thanks Roy's.
Don't go there on Christmas Day! It is unfortunate that this was our first (and last) time there. The service was terrible- not our server he did the best he could but they just did not plan well so although he was trying hard he was spread to thin and it was a three hour ordeal. We asked for lemon and never saw it, rarely got refills, etc. The prices were crazy expensive but I expected that because it was a Christmas menudo average price was 55 a plate but my daughter and I had to order a special menu because we are vegan and when they brought the check it was 70 dollars for two plates of tofu!!! We couldn't get the dessert that comes with it so I was blown away by that price! I know for a fact the dinners that my daughter and I got was nowhere near 35 dollars a plate to make - a few pieces of tofu (which I know is about 5 dollars a block), a few spoonfuls of white rice (which is probably $1.25) and some vegetables (which is probably - benefit of the doubt -$8.00) so that price was absolutely ridiculous. We won't be back because of this experience.
The service was fantastic. Every person associated with Roy's was friendly, knowledgeable, and professional.
The food and drinks were fabulous however portions of fish and vegetables were scant compared to beef and potato dishes.
Noise levels were high despite carpeted floors and the ladies bathroom was deplorable...dirty and unstocked as well as a wet floor from a toilet overflow.
Food and the waitstaff was lovely. But the place was too bright, freezing cold and way too loud. We also surprised that the tables were so flimsy . We watched as they changed the tablecloth to reveal plastic tops awkwardly linked together for larger parties They were tippy when ever you put your glass down, which detracted from the meal as you were afraid your drink would topple. For a high end restaurant we expected better tables and better ambiance.
But our waiter was wonderful.
Delicious food as always, their fish is particularly good. This was a Christmas Eve dinner for four friends, service was ok but not particularly attentive. Annoying to be presented with the wrong table's bill, which was considerably more expensive than ours.
The food was good but nothing above ordinary. However the prices were outrageous! $42.00 for 5oz piece of Mahi Mahi wth 3 potato coins & 2 asparagus spears. $12.00 for 4 grilled romaine lettuce leaves & Caesar dressing. $15.00for an old fashioned. I could go on but you get the idea. Very poor value for the caliber of this cuisine. Will not be back!
