We used to dine at the Roy’s in La Jolla fairly frequently. We haven’t been in years and drove to the waterfront from North County for my son‘s birthday. It’s sucked. The prices have gone through the roof. The parking situation was ridiculously confusing and had us walking around the convention center at 10 o’clock at night. My coffee was served cold, we had to ask repeatedly for things that we had ordered, and it was mercilessly slow. The food tasted great, but not for almost 50 bucks for a slice of fish. This place has turned into a tourist trap.
This was an awful and disappointing experience
Our meal was fantastic, the server, really good but way too busy to truly take it to the next level. The outdoor patio was jammed packed with tables. Waitstaff we’re having to squeeze by an ill placed table next to us so all night we were leaning out of the way to avoid plates and glasses. Not ideal when out for your birthday dinner. If you are planning to dine here outside, ask to be seated as far away from the front door for a better experience.
I would have hoped that Roy’s would have provided more room between tables not only for guests to enjoy a little space but for their staff to maneuver effectively. In the future, I will pass on this experience.
I ordered the Roy’s combo, which consisted of grilled cod and a boneless braised beef short rib. The short rib was as cold as if it was taken from a refrigerator and served. I requested a replacement and it took so long to get it I had to have it boxed and taken home. The meal was comped but I believe more could have be done to compensate for a dreadful experience.
Maybe one of the BEST meals I have ever had in a restaurant ... but EXPENSIVE! A main course, no bread, 2 glasses of win, tax & tip = $157.
Excellent server! Food was delicious! Overall, we were very pleased with the whole experience!
A small piece of Butterfish for $48?? Overpriced &120 lunch for 2.There were only 3 gluten free options on the menu. Not going back
Food and ambience are exceptional. Save room for the chocolate soufflé!
We were here celebrating an anniversary and while they were out of the lobster tails for the Filet Mignon and Lobster Tail, our server was great about recommending other dishes and we settled on just the filet mignon. The appetizers were DELICIOUS and our celebratory dessert was so special and delicious. Wonderful experience overall.
Elected to sit inside with a beautiful view of the marina. Food was good, but not excellent like I’ve had before at Roy’s.
Lobster bisque and sea bass were wonderful. Ask for Mahi cooked medium. It was perfect. Chocolate soufflé was delicious.
Still a very nice place and pleasant surroundings. Had the blackened tuna still very good but Schechuan spare ribs were dry for hubby´s taste. Ribs should have come moist or with some sauce aside. Salads were very good and the jalapeño marguarita was amazingly satisfying. Will come back. Keep that kitchen steady!
The ribs were served without glaze and had to go back. The mahi was over cooked and sent back. Their 2nd attempt was undercooked. This is the worst Roy’s I have been to.
Overall my experience here was very good. We were about 5 mins early to our reservation and hostess greeted us and noted that they were running a little late and will get us seated in about 15min. We took a seat to wait and noticed another couple checked in maybe 2-3mins later that had reservations the same time however they were seated right away in the outside patio where we had requested to be seated. That was a little unsettling for me as we did check in first. Nevertheless, we finally get seated and we chose a corner table.
We had views of the bay and marina and the patio umbrella did help provide some shade. Our Server, Lauren, greeted us and was very friendly. Took our drink orders and we ordered the three-Course Lobster Prix Fixe Dinner. Did not have much of beer option at the time. My wife had the Mai Tai which was refreshing. I had the lobster bisque which was good but would have been better if it was hot as it was luke warm. It did have a generous amount of lobster pieces. My wife had the lobster potsticker which were very good.
For main entrée my wife had the Twin Maine Lobster Tails and I had the Asian Style Lobster Scampi. Both were very good however my wife stated the lobster tail were a little bit on the salty side.
For desert we had the Pineapple Upside Down Cake and Roy’s Melting Hot Chocolate Soufflé. Oh my goodness, this was delicious and worked perfect with a cup of freshly brewed coffee.
We had parked on the Marriott hotel parking lot and they did validate my parking ticket which came out to be $10 which was not bad although I would think parking should have been complimentary.
Overall it was not a bad dining experience, our server, Lauren, was very attentive. Would I go again, Yes.
We have gone to Roy’s many times and then I saw some poor reviews. We had some gift cards to use so we went again and we’re happily surprised.
The service was great. The food was wonderful and our steaks came out perfectly. The bar staff is superb and Vanessa our server was quick and efficient. Their scalloped potato’s were outstanding. Best I’ve ever had. The only thing that could have been better was the Chocolate lava cake as it didn’t have any lava pouring out of it which it should. However it was still tasty.
The parking in the lot off Kettner was crazy expensive. $24 for about 2 1/2 hours. Dinner was $190 +$40 tip. It is expensive for just 2 but on a special occasion I would go back. The view of the harbor is delightful. Ambiance has to cost something.
Food was delicious: sushi, Chilean seabass, classic four. Dessert is always fabulous with the chocolate soufflé and pineapple upside down cake, plus my free birthday dessert (brownie). Good friendly service and the view of the harbor is stunning.
Understaffed, but our server was excellent
I decided to give Roy's another chance even though I had a bad experience with their service about a year and a half ago. I am not a high maintenance diner that it is very demanding. The service was slow again this time and I even felt bad for the couple seated next to me, they were out on their anniversary and complained that they waited forever to get refills on their drinks. I do have to say the food was really good once it arrived. I think they just need to work on their service.
The food was excellent as was the service. The inside seating was nice. The outside seating area and bar are a mess. The bar area is a disorganized mess, and needs a good cleaning. The outside seating area is loud and dirty.
Food and service was excellent!
Always a fantastic job!!!
My rating is largely driven by the miserable parking situation. Not enough valets to handle the crowd. I had to wait 16-20 minutes for the traffic jam at the hotel entrance to clear just self park. I may still be there had I waited on valet.
Food was good, not great. Service was outstanding.
Made reservation for Thursday night to take wife out for special dinner. They had inside and outside dining. While walking in to check in, one waiter/bus boy RAN by and bumped into my wife. Bad start. Since outdoor seating was getting full and maybe chilly, we decided to stay inside although the atmosphere was better outside. Inside feel kinda dead.
Got to a nice table with nice view of the marina. Very shortly, the table in front of us by the window opened up so we asked host if we could move there. 5 minutes later, was told that the bus boy was too busy can't can't clear it for a while.. ok, fine. Our table was comfy still had good view.
But then we waited.. studied the menu in depth... waited.. Waitress finally came by and dropped off two water and gone again... more waiting... mean time, another waiter came by.. looked at the empty table in front of us... I thought he was going to clear it. But no, he just looked and moved over hovering by another table.. seems to be waiting for them to order or something. But no interaction, he just stood around 6' from us/them and hovered there. Very strange.
In the mean time, a food server or manager dressed not in uniform brought food to another table. Looked at us as he walked by but no greeting or even a smile..
The vibe is just weird strange. I didn't expect that at a fine dining restaurant. And we were well dressed not like we look like slobs or anything.
After a few more minutes of no service, we decided it was time to leave and go somewhere else.
It was very disappointing because we had excellent experience in Roy's UTC which is now closed.. I really didn't expect this and we almost never walk out of restaurants.
Ended up having a great meal at the Pier Cafe right on the water and saved the evening.
We have been to Roy’s in Scottsdale many times and also in Maui. These both have great ambiance but Roy’s San Diego is really off the mark in this regard. Sure it’s next to the Marina but totally unimpressed with the decor. We return over and over to Roy’s in Scottsdale but not interested in San Diego Roy’s on our next visit
When we arrived the restaurant was 10% full, empty tables everywhere they wanted to sit us between two other tables that had patrons at them, with the pandemic why would you do that. Secondly the waitress said she was new so we expected her to be overly attentive, it was just the opposite. The waiter how serviced the table next to us tended his table three times to our waiters one. Poor service at best.
Tables are sort of too close. Staff and customers had to squeeze by. Nobody said "excuse me". Follow up on requests are slow. My wife asked for a glass of wine, but our waiter brought us the bill. He completely forgot. We asked at least 3 staff members if we could switch out tables. It took about 20 minutes for that request to be completed. Overall, the staff was nice, just slow.
Lobster was delicious, and Albert's service made for a great night out.
Service was great as usual and some of the Chef's specials were really fantastic. Our guests enjoyed being at the harbor and the setting.
Have loved going to Roy's for many years, but sadly they're slipping. Two of our favorites failed: The lobster bisque was served cold and watery (albeit large pieces of lobster were there) and the chocolate lava cake had no hot chocolate lava pour out when opened. WTH! These two disappointments bracketed our hot and tasty entrees (the Butterfish thankfully remained top notch as did all our other entrees). This made the dinner experience not a total disaster (as did the well made cocktails). The service was slow and unattentive, which we chalked up to the COVID hangover. Not sure if/when we'll be back to Roy's San Diego, so it looks like Eddie V's is our new go-to!
I thought it was pretty good. One sushi roll for an app pushed back our meal 20 min. Server told us sushi was delayed. Steak was cooked under almost rare when ordered Med. Fish was excellent. Ribs were good. Poke was average. Lava cake took 30 min to come out after dinner plates cleared and was over cooked; no melting chocolate. They took it off the bill. We would still go back. Server did great.
Dishes inconsistent. Some good, others not up to normal standard at Roy’s
Had a very lovely time at the restaurant. Our table was on the patio overlooking the harbor and it was very nice. The ambience is better than we anticipated given it was our first time there. Also happy with the food and service. Our children really enjoyed the experience as well.
Took our waiters recommendation and ordered the Butter Fish, bad move. Zero taste, plain white rice with overcooked Bok Choy and a couple of slices of carrots. He did take it back, which he should have, but the replacement I ordered (Mahi) wasn’t much better. Too pricey, mediocre service and an otherwise forgettable dinner add up to a big thumbs down.
We were outside looking over the Marina and loved it. The sea bass special was, indeed, special, and the shell fish combo delightful. The service was prompt and very friendly. Obviously making you feel like o'hana (family). One note: the parking valets are not restaurant guest friendly. Head on into convention center parking - only a few steps further, but friendlier and Roy's will validate.
Service was great, food was great, location is like Hawaii
Staying at the adjacent Marriott Marquis. Restaurant is 5 minute walk from the North Tower.
Reservations were at 6pm and Table was ready at the marina window inside. Nice clean and quiet atmosphere.
Food was excellent. I had a specialty drink however was dissatisfied with the lack of alcohol to juice and sweetener.
Good service but the food was nothing exceptional.
The grey sauce on the roll was not visibly appetizing and ruined the experience. Also the food took forever to come out.
We have had many fabulous dining experiences at various Roy's locations through out the USA . Unfortunately this experience was the worst and left a " bad taste " in our minds.
Service was slow and management did not seem customer focused at all . Our waitress tried to assist but it was beyond her control . We waited over an hour for appetizers after ordering . My daughters arrived COLD . Then to add insult to injury our main course did not arrive until well over one and a half hours after ordering . We asked numerous times . Finally a manager came to our table and said " .. I understand you have a question ... " with no real empathy about the slowness. An unfortunate bad experience not to be repeated
