This was our third visit to the Roy’s property in La Jolla. The first meal was when they first opened. Nothing really spectacular. We have received multiple discount mailers over the years. Two years ago, we used one of them for a lunch. Neither the food nor the service were remarkable, and we left with a “meh” feeling, and no intention to return.
Two weeks ago, we received another mailer from Roy’s and I threw it in the car just in case we were ever near a Roy’s property and hungry for something quick. Yes, one more chance.
Our experience this time was nothing short of horrible. The restaurant was not busy by any stretch of the mind. The service was extremely slow. The speciality drink my wife ordered came without a key ingredient. After requesting that it be made properly, the replacement did not arrive for almost 20 minutes. Sleeping bartender?
We had both ordered the tasting menu for dinner. Of the two offerings, we ordered one of each. Not only was the sequence of delivery slow and unimpressive, the servers did not once mention what they were placing in front of us. Or, if they did, they were whispering to themselves. The starters were lukewarm and sloppily plated.
The main courses showed up about 25 minutes later. My wife ordered the whitefish that was almost worth tasting. However, the little white rice triangle thingy that was placed next to her was a total mystery. It was refrigerator-cold, hard on the outside (DRY), and I assumed was served as a joke, as no rightful semi-Asian restaurant would present such tiny morsel of junk. The manager must have seen me poke at it. He came over and said — without me mentioning anything — “Is the rice cold and hard?” — and then took it away and returned with the same thing a few minutes later. Obviously, the kitchen was aware of the problem and did nothing to correct whatever mishap allowed it to be sent out.
Perhaps the most egregious course was may main, the pork Osso Bucco. Almost frozen inside. Strike three!
It was our first time going to Roy’s. The service was friendly all around but a bit slow. Food was so-so. I had their mango mojito which was delish! My husband ordered the wagyu beef burger which was a bit too salty though the truffle fries that came with it was very good. I ordered the macadamia nut crusted mahi mahi. It was tasteless and on the dry side. Dessert was a chocolate torte. It was hard and slightly dry. Not a place we would think of returning to.
We dined at Roy's after a day of shopping. We were ten minutes early for our reservation and therefore seated at the bar. It was happy hour. I ordered a glass of Ozeki Junmai sake. It was served room temperature. The bartender said she had written orders to serve it that way. I didn't care for it unchilled, and she couldn't have cared less. The waiter at our dining table knew nothing about this order to serve the good sake room temp. Annoying. Then, the prix-fixe three course meal was hit and miss: the spring rolls were outstanding, but my white fish in lobster cream sauce was fishy tasting. It was the bad lobster cream sauce that ruined it. My friend's burger--ordered medium rare--was served medium to well done. Such a shame. Finally, the chocolate souffle was fine. I will only go for happy hour from now on.
The meal was good but I have to say that for the money they charge, it was just satisfactory. It's not Ruth's Chris as far as food quality is concerned. It was a Friday and the restaurant is open and the noise was pretty high, especially from the Happy Hour bar scene. I forgot my credit
card and even though the waiter took our payment at the end and we were still there for awhile, he did not see it and return it? I had to return two days later when I realized it was missing.
It was a satisfactory evening but not that memorable.
We went to dinner on Sunday night with friends and left disappointed. The restaurant was half empty and our server was Charles. We ordered cocktails and Charles explained the menu, but forgot to point out the last 2 pages which are 3 course meals that are regular size for the prize of an entrée. Of course we ordered the 3 course meal. 2 appetizer came out first and the other 2came 5 minutes later. Timing was way off that night. We got our entrée and hadn't even started when Charles came by and said he would start the desserts, since they take a couple minutes to make. We felt rushed and dessert came right after the entrée plates were gone. Charles put down the check with the desserts. Never asked, if we would like another drink or coffee. All 4 of us would have liked another drink and also coffee after dessert. Which resulted in no tip. I would never recommend this restaurant to anybody. It's a shame, because the food was very good.
The restaurant has beautiful Decour, the hostess was lovely and recommended happy hour in the bar which was delicious and the wine place very good also that was on the happy hour menu. We then we’re seated and I ordered the four types of fish. The mahi mahi and the Ahi were not of the best caliber. The waiter and the manager were nice and took some off the bill.
I’ve gone to Roy’s many times and always had a great experience with their foods. Always left happy. I bought a Groupon deal and thought it would be nice to try. This was the first time I was unhappy. My boyfriend ordered the Waygu burger and asked for rare plus. It came medium and I asked for the Mahi Mahi and it was over cooked. I will have to give them credit for great costumer service. The manager came over to apologize and offered us to come back on another Groupon deal on him. So that was very nice of them. We were ok with out foods in spite of it not being done right because the favors of the foods was exceptional and made up for being over cooked.
My wife and I bought the four-course meal from livingsocial. The appetizer was very good, sushi. The salad was not very good my wife didn't even finish hers. The dressing they put on the salad wasn't that good. The main entree was very good, I believe it was Whitefish. The desert appeared to be store bought and not very good. Overall I thought it was a good meal but not a very good value for the prices they charge. The service was very very good. The manager was somewhat flexible with my wife because she has a lot of dietary restrictions. He did charge us $10 extra for the new entree but at least it addressed the problem.
I have dined at Roy's 20-30 times and always been pleased with everything. This time I wasn't. When my martini came, it only filled 1/3 of the glass. I complained and the waitress countered with "that's the way they do it, a shot and 1/2." I dine out a lot and have never been served a martini that was not at least double their pour. I complained again and the manager came over and explained it was their policy to pour that amount. He was nice about it and no doubt had not made the policy himself. My chicken was overcooked as well, but in fairness my date loved her fish.
Upon entering the restaurant one can smell the deodorizer from the bathroom.
Appetizer and salad took a long time. One salad was forgotten about. The quality of the salad was awful. Wilted lettuce, small portion for the price charged. Quality of entres and desert very poor for the price paid. Ambience more like a fast food chain restaurant than one that charges $35-40 avg for an entre. Do not recommend and will never go back. I don't fault the the server or the manager who tried their best to apologize and make up for the poor overall experience
food is always fabulous - the filet and lobster tail combo divine. seemed like the wait staff was under staffed. had to make multiple requests - lobster butter and potato not delivered w/ meal. busboy was snarky when we had additional requests. was a birthday celebration but no indication from restaurant. wine pours were very skimpy and disappointing. we love roys for special occasions and hope this was the exception and not a decline in service.
Food was quite good overall but was a little disappointed with the Osso Buco in the 4-course chef’s tasting menu. It was a little tough, not tender but it still had a good flavor to it.
For me, the first appetizer of the chilled Vietnamese Lobster eggroll was not good.
The rest of our party’s meals were good with the exceptional desserts...
We haven't been to this location before. It was clean and nicely decorated but needs an update. The menu needs to be refreshed. The appetizers were overwhelmed with ginger.
They have this log of a cake made with dates. That's a big no. We sent it back. It came with the chef's choice menu. Please take that off and never serve it again.
The oso buco was slightly dry so i had to ask for a side of sauce which is also doused in ginger. Does the chef not taste these things?
The only thing that was awesome was the service and the butter fish. Loved the butter fish!
We paid $133+ dinner for 2 and it was just ok.
If Roy's is going to survive then it needs a facelift in everything. Menu and decor.
We were seated at a nice table by the windows. Our server Britney was attentive and brought us the best 1988s we have ever had at Roy’s over so many years. Our thanks poured out to Michelle, the barkeep. The Edamame, served upon request, paired nicely with the cocktails. The lobster in the Lobster Potstickers was slightly tough. The Sea Scallops were perfectly done but the wild rice that accompanied it was a little too coarse to pair nicely. The Hibachi Style Salmon was excellent and combined wonderfully well with the accompanying rice. Overall, a sumptuous experience.
Went there with the wife and no kids! Food was fantastic, but we knew that since this is our second visit. Fish is so fresh and delicious. Unfortunately, we were seated next to the kitchen and that was horrendous. Noise level was unbearable (85dBs with peak at 95dBs) and that made the whole experience very disappointing.
We love your food! Always choose this place for special events. I was sad that your specialty cocktails from 2 years ago has changed dramatically, which used to have a type of cucumber martini with a delicate flavor. The drinks were so good then; but on this menu some of the drinks had too many items in them. Just my opinion. We will return.
Disappoint evening, after being seated it was 10 minutes before we were acknowledged. It then took an additional 15 minutes to get our drinks. We ordered a sushi roll to share as appetizer and took over 30 minutes to arrive. A server brought a tempura roll to our table after 25 minutes and apologized that our appetizer was taking so long and that it was componentry. The tempura roll would have taken longer to make than our original order. All in all it was over an hour before we received our meals after we ordered. When our food arrived, it was obvious that it had been sitting around. Asparagus was wilted and dry, butter on the stake had solidified, all food was room temp. Service was the slowest I have seen in a long time.
