Roy’s, simply put, is our favorite restaurant. Not only is the food fantastic but the staff is great, the service is impeccable and the atmosphere is fun and inviting.
Butterfish was fantastic, so delicious. Service was also great.
The 7 of us went there for a birthday lunch for 4 birthdays on a Sunday. It was not crowded, food was delicious, gave us FOUR complimentary birthday cakes since we were celebrating 4 birthdays! They took a lot of nice table pictures for us and pictures outside which was so nice to remember the occasion and celebration. The butterfish, mahi mahi, and salmon were delicious and well executed. I will go back again.
I want to give them a chance to redeem, but our family dinner was unfortunate. We waited over an hour between arrival and appetizer. My sister had to go find the server. He comped us a beverage and our desserts. However he did not just accept the error. He sounded defensive. Although he did apologize, he should have left it at that without excuses. Explanations and excuses are similar, but his approach lacked ownership.
The food was delicious, the restaurant accommodated our large family and a baby, but we were forgotten for a long time which tainted our opinion.
The food and service were impeccable. We tried the taste of the Philippines special and it was delicious. We had dinner prior to the Teddy Ball charity event at the Hyatt.
Consistently good food. Been there before and will return.
friend received food posioning. salmon was under cooked. desert was disapointing by far
Great thanksgiving pri fixe meal option. The wine didn’t pair well and not worth the add on.
I was underwhelmed by the food. It sounded great when I made a reservation but it was nothing special. We shared that my husband had a garlic intolerance when we got there. We were questioned if it was an allergy or an intolerance or he just didn’t like it. That was the wrong question. There must’ve been garlic in something he ate because he was in a lot of pain afterwards. The desert was good.
We decided to have our T-day dinner at Roy's. The dinner was great. The portions were perfectly sized (I would have appreciated more veggies, but that's just me), the turkey breast slices were well seasoned and juicy, the stuffing was tasty. The desserts were delish.
We ate at Roy's on Thanksgiving at 2pm... the food was wonderful and our waiter was sooooo nice and friendly! It was a great holiday lunch!
I had the pork chop and it was superb! I wish it were on the menu all the time. I would love to have it again.
I have the macadamia nut crusted mahi mahi
It was very mushy and not very good. The presentation wasn’t very good either not very colorful. My friend had the seared I he which she said was excellent. This particular restaurant doesn’t have much atmosphere. The service was great the appetizers were a bit too spicy as compared to other restaurants where we have had the same appetite
My husband and I have been bringing my parents here for several years. I read the recent reviews with a lot of trepidation, but ultimately decided to return tonight, and I’m happy that we did. Jessica was our server and she was stellar - accurately assessing that my mom would have extra questions, and patiently waiting for her to decide. The food quality was great - nothing was dry, over or undercooked, or delivered in error to our table. We did wait a while for dessert but it wasn’t a problem for our group. I am grateful to the Roy’s La Jolla team for their professionalism and kindness.
Great experience once again. Mary is a superstar!
We have been customers of Roy's La Jolla for many years. This last visit was very disappointing for three reasons. The restaurant did not have Ahi fish and there were very few customers and we could not pay with our credit card.
We got the impression that the restaurant was preparing to close in the near future. Is that a possibility?
We were marred in this restaurant. We went there for our 6th anniversary. My husband recieved the wrong meal at first. His correct meal came and he really enjoyed it. The dessert he ordered came out to the table burnt on the bottom. Roy's is his favourite restaurant, but for our anniversary we were let down.
Gary Spears and Mark Hartzell
I was very disappointed with the food. We ordered a sushi roll and truffle fries as an appetizer, and the truffle fries may have been the highlight of the meal. I ordered the shellfish trio, the lobster and scallops were good, but very plain and the shrimp had no seasoning and didn’t taste like anything but char from the grill. Mashed potatoes were very bland and again lacked flavor. The other entree at our table, macadamia mahi was overcooked and dry. Dessert was ok, but again lacked any real flavor, maybe we shouldn’t have tried something other than the pineapple upside down cake, but my husband loves bread pudding so we decided to try the bread pudding. If we hadn’t ordered dessert with our entrees we probably would have skipped dessert. Our server was very helpful and checked on us often.
Horrible. We’ll never return. And we’ve been going to Roy’s for 25 years in the Hawaiian islands and here stateside...
I guess if their chef hadn't walked out and left them in the lurch, it would have been okay. I hope they get it together. With all the competition around, they can't afford to have bad Friday nights.
I always go to Roy’s and order the same thing. Tonight they had a special three course Filipino menu I opted to try. The appetizer Tocino skewers were fine but extremely fatty. The main dish Sinigang, which is typically in the Philippines fish with a tangy, sour tamarind broth. The Sinigang came out not hot at all and excrements oily almost like they took the pan to sauté the seafood and just dumped it into the broth. They were kind enough to bring me a new one and it was definitely not your typical Philippine Sinigang but i was hungry and ate it. The Ube Flan was nice, best thing I had to eat there. I am really disappointed because I frequent Roy’s Pebble Beach whenever I am in the area and it never disappoints. Maybe I should have just stuck with my normal go to menu items.
Great service. Great food. A little pricey, but we expected that.
I’m a big fan of Roys but this time, sushi wasn’t as fresh. Too bad. Service was great and all other things I would expect was there except freshness of sushi.
We went Saturday night with a coupon. The place was fairly empty at 8:15. Service was friendly but had several flaws, and the food was decent but overpriced. Order taking went well and server explained that the coupon would be taken off at payment. Salads arrived very quickly - before cocktail/wine arrived so we set our drinks aside until the entree since they they didn’t work with the salad dressings.
Different server arrived with our entrees before I finished my salad. He said, “Oh, I see you’re still enjoying your salad,” then just stood there while we moved our salad plates aside to make room for the entrees. The empty dirty salad plates were left on the table for the rest of the meal, even when the manager stopped by to see how we were doing. At that point it wasn’t worth mentioning it since we were almost done.
Also while we were eating our entrees, the first server dropped by to see if we wanted to order a dessert that took extra time “like I explained earlier”, she said. Only she had never said a word until then.
Finally the coupon was not taken off the bill and we had to have it adjusted. If the coupon was supposed to entic us to come back, it didn’t work. Poor service (they talked the talk but didn’t walk the walk) and high prices were not selling points.
It was our first time eating at Roy’s. I ordered the seafood combination. The lobster and shrimp were under cooked. It should have been visible to the cook. I’m not one for sending food back, so ate it. We won’t be going back.
The staff was very nice.
We both had the three course Philippines special menu which was excellent. Pork belly skewers for the appetizer, the Adobo Braised Pork Shank for the entrée and their molten chocolate soufflé for dessert. All excellent!
Great server, great eats!
Upon arrival, my partner and I were seated at a nice table by the window. We were served water and a delicious snack of edamame, perfectly seasoned. Then, our drinks came tasting fresh. We ordered the beef and butter fish both were cooked to perfection. The accompanying vegetables and potatoes were delicious as well. For dessert, pineapple upside down cake with vanilla bean ice cream and we left smiling. Loved it, always do!
Very good sea food, excellent food plating and very tasty. Service was excellent. Wine very good. A bit pricey but fits for the area of Westfield/UTC/La jolla
Roy's is where we go to celebrate our birthdays and anniversary when we are in town. The food is always outstanding. Our server, Mary H., is always very helpful and responsive. We're hoping that when the lease is up next year that management finds another location. It would be a great loss to us and, we susxpect, many other patrons.
Food, fresh, flavor, playing service, all good. Great place to celebrate special events.
$38 for 4 oz mahi mahi 3 slices of potato and 2 spears of asparagus. $42 for 3 jumbo shrimp and a cup of salty noodles. With two cocktails an appetizer and dinner, Bill was $130 and we were still hungry. I think they could have given a full serving of vegetables.
Met with my brother a few days before my wedding - great time, nice atmosphere, delicious food & attentive service!
Once again a great dining experience. We look forward to our next visit.
Food was a stage& very pricey
Everything was wonderful.
Starting with the outstanding service, followed by drinks and food.
Lobster potstickers, shrimp tempura and pork rib appetizers were excellent.
My favorite butterfish is always delicious.
The food was amazing but it was the amazing service that stood out.
We've been enjoying Roy's in La jolla since they opened We even got to meet Roy Yamaguchi once himself when he visited several years ago ;-) Keep up the quality folks you're a class act
My husband and I went to Roy's to celebrate my birthday. The food and service are consistently excellent which are two of the reasons we continually go back. Highly recommend.
They offer some Gluten Free options but with restrictions; for example, the wedge salad is GF as long as you eat the salad without the dressing!
