Roy's Pasadena Ratings and Reviews
Our family got together at Roy's for dinner and were lucky enough to secure a pvt room. The 10 of us ordered the canoe appetizers and enjoyed a variety of entrees including the Tomahawk ribeye which was delicious. My only complaint was the misoyaki black cod which was much darker in color than usual and must've been soaked too long in the misoyaki sauce as it was quite strong. Otherwise, our waiter, Carl was very attentive and we had a great time!!!
After reading the reviews for Roy's Restaurant, I was slightly disappointed in the quality of food. The small portions and taste of the $41 Misoyaki Butterfish, which is actually an Alaskan Black Cod, was just okay. Although the fish was cooked to perfection, there was nothing special about the way it tasted. You can basically get the same quality Miso Black Cod at Kabuki Restaurant for more than half the cost. Instead of the Misoyaki preparation, I think that a prestigious restaurant like Roy's Restaurant should upgrade the preparation to a kasuzuke prepared black cod. As far as I know, the only restaurants that prepare fish in this manner are all in Seattle, WA. Doing this can separate Roy's Restaurant from the commonality of miso prepared fish. Even though Roy Yamaguchi is no longer associated with the restaurant with his name, I'm sure he would know this method of preparation. The aloha roll was okay for me but too spicy for my wife's taste. The highlight food item was the sunrise roll which is a tempura crusted ahi roll wrapped in seaweed. A clever technique was used to get a crunchy texture on the outside of the seaweed wrap by blowtorching the tempura batter on the outside of the seaweed. Although our dinner was at 5:15 pm, they were already out of the peach cobbler. The chocolate soufflé was underwhelming. It lacked the usual puffiness of a properly prepared soufflé. Hence, it was a lowrise soufflé which tasted okay, with a thicker consistency than the chocolate soufflés that I've tasted before. The service from Aly was excellent! She was expedient, attentive for my special needs and accommodating for suggestions. The ambiance was quiet and classy and the restaurant staff was efficient, helpful and friendly.
My overall rating for this restaurant on a scale of 1 - 5 is 3.75.
We went in on a Monday night. They run a Sunday/Monday price fixe menu. It is an exceptional value. It is all of the same portion sizes as their regular entrees. We had so much food we each took food home. Two people, one drink each, appetizer, entree and dessert for slightly over $100.00. I would highly recommend Roy's during their Sunday/Monday promotion.
We enjoyed another great meal at Roy’s. Malachi was our server. He was pleasant, efficient, timed out meal perfectly and his food suggestions were spot on. We enjoyed the lobster potstickers, Caesar salad. Jumbo Tiger Prawns, Scallops and Butterfish. All delicious and perfectly cooked.
Every year my dear friend and I celebrate lunch for our joint birthdays. I had experienced a great birthday celebration years before at dinner, but since Roy's is now open for lunch, it was our choice. When we were seated, there was a birthday card with a nice sentiment on the table, surrounded by baby orchids. I enjoyed a delicious Mai Tai, my friend something not as exciting. (OK, I'll tell you, light beer over ice--she loved it.) We were crazy about our appetizers, lobster potstickers in a wonderful sauce. For our entrees we were again in accord with the short rib plate. This included a tasty miso soup with tofu, but more importantly, great flavored mushrooms. Also on the plate was a salad, and then the generous portion of short rib meat over pineapple fried rice. The fourth section of the divided platter had fresh-made cookies with white chocolate and, I believe, macadamia nuts. Yum! although I took mine home for later as we were surprised with desserts on an oblong plate with burning candles and "Happy Birthday" scripted in chocolate. We were pleased to discover that the dessert was Key Lime pie, which didn't look like any I had tried before. This would not usually be my choice, but Roy's version is absolutely delicious. It took us a minute or so to figure out what we were tasting as it is not the usual gelatinous green, very tart rendition. More like maybe a cheesecake with the right flavor, but not so strong as to make your jaws clench (my usual experience). We loved it. The special treatment was not done yet, pictures were taken of us, with each of us receiving a copy to memorialize this fabulous birthday lunch. When my friend and I are able to meet, we enjoy extremely leisurely lunches. We did not feel any impatience or the least bit hurried although being the first ones in and the last ones out. This is not always the case. Also, the tab was quite reasonable. I can assure you that this will be my go-to place for any special occasion meals in the future
Food sounded good and original on the menu, but was off-tasting, overly salty, and not worth the price. The service was very slow, and it took nearly 30 minutes for the waiter to pick up the bill and credit card at the end. We agreed that we will not return.
Our server was amazing, very knowledgeable about all the food. We had a variety of food...sushi, potstickers and fish entree it was all delicious and the martinis were spot on. I’ve eaten here several times and food, service and cocktails have always been consistent. And even though it’s on the pricer side it’s all well worth the money.
I usually love the servers but we got a bad one. He wasn't around much at all. When I asked for a cocktail recommendation he stated, "wellco don't know because I don't drink cocktails with dinner" then I had to interrogate him to find out what drinks they had! He should learn the appropriate time to give an opinion and when to just answer a simple question.
We started with the lobster dumplings and ahi poke which were both delicious. I had the filet which was cooked perfectly and a really tender piece of meat. It cut like butter. My fiancé had the salmon which was equally delicious. Chef Adam is awesome and would recommend this spot for all occasions. I heard the happy hour is great and I will be back for that soon.
I have always given Roy's an excellent rating. The food was as good this time as it always is. However the service left a bit to be desired. We asked for edamame when we gave our order. The order came and we asked again for the edamame and were told it was steaming. We finished our dinner and still no edamame. Also refills on the water was room temperature. This was not Roy's quality.
Food was good, but the lobster potstickers were a bit salty which we can't ask to tame down. The other items we can ask for light salt the next time we visit. Service was excellent. Good for dinner date, but not if you're in a rush. Valet parking was $10 which I thought was a bit high. Would have parked myself, but had a handicapped individual with me, and there is no loading/unloading space.
It had been a year since our last visit to Roy's and the food reminded us why. As my wife said after dinner (she had salmon, I had yellowtail), well my socks are still on. Roys seems to travel on a strong reputation that we are yet to see played out in its food. Best value may me the aloha hour and appetizers, but that is only available in the bar area. Cannot even order happy hour drinks at the dinner table.
Enjoyed our dining experience & were surprised to see their Sunday/Monday Pri-Fix Menu that was sensational. We enjoyed our usual Grey Goose Martinis , then checked out the Special Menu & to our surprise, most of their entrees were available on this Pri-Fix Menu which included a Starter and a dessert which were fantastic & for the price of the entree ! The Lobster Bisque was so rich & tasty; The Maui Wowie Salad was delicious , the Seafood Sampler was devine as was the Roy's Trio. We were so full, we took our desserts, the Key Lime Tarts home for our evening treat. Aly, our server was a delight, attentive, professional, friendly & acknowledged us up on arrival as she has served us on recent previous visits.
Great Food, Great Value, Great Time !!!
This was our second Roy's Experience, the first being in Waikoloa when we lived on the Big Island of Hawaii. The food was fantastic, the fish fresh and prepared with great expertise. Our appetizers were perfect , albeit it all could have been served slightly warmer. In the future we will be sure to save room for the fantastic desserts. This was an anniversary splurge for us and it was terrific! Staff was plentiful and attentive. Will be a happy memory for many years to come.
