We love Roy’s because there is something delicious for everyone no matter what their preference is. I’m a pescatarian but my best friend is vegan and my husband is a meat eater but we all enjoyed the menu. Also, they have a great beer, wine, and cocktail selection. It’s always a good time for us at Roy’s
Butterfish was just like how it taste in Hawaii! Great food!
My husband and I have loved Roy’s for years. We would go there each year for our anniversary (June 13) and occasionally other times. Always we ordered the Butterfish. However when we were there two nights ago, you guys had messed with the sauce. We could taste the usual subtle sauce, but the fish and the taste was also smothered with additional ingredients which were so very unnecessary. For us the Butterfish was ruined.....so much so that we will go elsewhere from now on and will stop recommending Roy’s.
We’re baffled why you would change such a long-time successful recipe.

FOOD: The "canoe" boat appetizer was quite good, and they customized the number of pieces to fit the size of our party. Of the 4 items included, our table's favorites were the ribs & the lobster potsticker. For entrees, my child had teriyaki salmon with rice & veggies and she enjoyed it immensely (she's 8). My wife had the blackened ahi & mentioned it was extremely spicy but good. After our appetizer, I chose to go light and had a Caesar Salad, which was fine but nothing special. It was on a plate that was a too small for the amount of salad, making it difficult to cut the large pieces of lettuce, which then caused several croutons to fall off the plate. I also got the Lakanilau (I think?) Roll that has wagyu beef & crab, and it was much bigger than I had anticipated, and quite good. In hindsight it was still too much food after the canoe boat appetizer. Lastly, our table shared a side of sauteed mushrooms which were fine but very under-seasoned (all three of us, including the 8-year-old) thought so. For dessert we shared a chocolate lava cake which had good flavor but was overcooked so the "lava" portion was very solid instead of gooey.
AMBIANCE: Pretty nice, clean, & the proper amount of lighting (not too light or too dark). The front room is was very noisy, and they show sports on TVs at the bar which is fine but seems not to fit with the more upscale appearance of the place. We sat in a small room at the back which was much more mellow and quiet, which we appreciated.
SERVICE: Our server was very nice & pleasant, but the actual service in our room was a bit sporadic; at times it felt as though the server and her back-up forgot to come check. At one point we got our big shareable appetizer, but no small appetizer plates. The guy who gave it to us said he'd come back with the plates, but never did. Our server finally brought them several minutes later. Same thing happened with a glass of wine I order.
Overall, a good experience with a few bumps in the road.
I ordered mahi-mahi and was given a different fish. When I pointed this out to the server he said they ran out of mahi mahi and substituted. He said I’m surprised you could tell the difference.
Roys always is a great place wherever we go, whether in Hawaii, California or other.
they have excellent food.
Food, very good.
Ambiance, loud and busy but died down later.
Wait staff/ service, outstanding EXCEPT after asking two different waiter/waitress to tell the front reception desk that we would be eating in the bar and not the dining room so please cancel my reservation, it was NOT done. Therefore, I got scolded by Open Table for “no show”.
ust dined in for my husband’s birthday. It was amazing! Our server, Brenda, definitely went out of her way to make us feel welcomed and special. She knew the menu very well and was able to make recommendations that we both really enjoyed. She was enjoyable company. The snow crab & wagyu beef sushi rolls were exceptional!! And the crab fried rice was well worth the $10. Thanks for the great experience Brenda! Will definitely be back soon.
A spectacular evening with amazing food and great service. Everything was delicious, from the cocktails to dessert. I enjoyed the charred lemon sour cocktail, lobster potstickers, Szechuan spiced pork ribs, sea scallops entree and the pineapple upside down cake dessert. I highly recommend to anyone looking to enjoy a night out and seafood.
It had been awhile since we dined there and made a last minute choice to come here. Glad we did. The food, drinks and service was excellent. It took kinda long to get our food for some reason, was getting packed till after we sat, it was worth the wait.
This is usually my go-to restaurant to take people to celebrate special occasions. This time I was disappointed. In the past when we were seated there would already be a placard on the table with the honored person's name on it recognizing the special occasion. This time I had to ask the waiter to bring it when he was taking our order, and then it was generic without the person's name. The waiter tried to push other deserts on us knowing that my friend was entitled to a complimentary slice of key lime pie. He took an obviously unflattering picture of my friend and did not offer to retake it. In the past the birthday celebrant was given a card with a discount good on a future meal. The restaurant really went the extra mile to make the person feel special. This is no longer true.
Their short rib dish is delicious -- my first time trying it. The butterfish is always really good! Though I swear the cut is getting smaller. I come here with my family fairly often and it's always a nice experience.
We went to celebrate a birthday and a belated anniversary. The Service was excellent, but the food was borderline cold. I don't understand why that the food was not very warm to hot. I was greatly disappointed and I would've sent our food back (we shared a meal) immediately except we did not want to upset our other guests whose food seemed to be OK temperature wise. Very disappointed in the food temperature. This was a very expensive dinner out to have mediocre food like that.
Amazing food. It's pricy but worth it. Try the happy hour menu in the bar. Amazing food at great prices there.
Asian fusion is well represented in the dishes. We are not big eaters, so my husband and I only tried two dishes, cocktail drink and dessert. All dishes were good. Other entrees were overpriced. But the dishes we ordered were worth the value.
Loved the pineapple upside-down cake!!
Excellent services. Manager was very professional.
This was our third time visiting Roy’s and foods are always good.
Food is mediocre and over priced - fire alarm went off for nearly 10 minutes - apologies but no discount or desert offered - food was really neither tasty nor very creative. Disappointing!! Staff were largely on show-up.
The food was less than mediocre. Towards the end our our meal the fire alarm went off. It lasted for a solid 10 minutes. The sound was unbearable. Though they said in the end that it was a child who pulled the alarm, many staff from the restaurant shared with us that they share an alarm system with the neighboring restaurants and so this was a normal occurrence. Honestly, we were there for a special occasion and the alarm was just terrible.
Dinner with friends from Japan who loved it.
The scallops were very under cooked, the ahi tuna was well done (I asked that it not be cold on the inside), I had to request my glass of wine two times, I asked for extra sauce for the Ahi, the cook had made the sauce so spicy (wasabi) that I couldn't finish my fish. And I like my food spicy. Overall, the 4 of us left hungry, which never happens at a restaurant. Very small portions. Won't be going back.
Always love their food and awesome service. Love going there for all of our family's special occasions. Thank you Roy's! Will keep coming back! :)
Good experience overall. Food and wine were excellent. Service very good. Our family had a wonderful Mother’s Day dinner.
Food was good, but we were dissatisfied with the time we waited for our meal which was over an hour. Our water was also not filled for quite awhile. We had the flag someone down
Overall, everything was great. There was a minor issue when it came time to pay, but it got resolved and we had an amazing meal. A little expensive, but worth it since it was our anniversary.
birthday! so special
We were celebrating a birthday. Roy's had a personalized greeting for the birthday person, plus a cupcake-shaped piece of key lime pie topped with whipped cream and raspberries, with "happy birthday" written on the plate in chocolate. A big hit!
We dined from the Pasadena Restaurant Week menu this time and found both presentation and food terrific.
We've been here numerous times, and always had wonderful food, excellent service, and a very enjoyable time.
Food was excellent. great presentation and cooked exactly to order. The further into your meal, the slower and less attentive the service. The price to value is average.
Nice restaurant with an interesting menu nice accomodations
Food was good but the cod portion itself was small. Although they made it up with lots of veggies and a big triangle piece of sushi rice. Drinks were average. We have to send 1 cocktail back but the waitress gladly replaced it. Our one complaint was the prices on the main courses are high compare to the same or even higher grade restaurants in the area. We had 2 main courses (short ribs and black cod) 1 appetizer and 2 drinks our bill was $170. That $30 off coupon in the mail sure tricked us :D
Very reliable. One gets the feeling of being welcome. There is a nice variety of food offerings and the food is tasty, well presented and good tasting.
The butterfish was amazing!!!
We always enjoy dining at Roy's and on this occasion we were celebrating a friend's birthday. The menu has changed since the last time we've come to Roy's and everything was, as always, delicious and attractive to the eye. The tempura shrimp was especially delicious. 2 in our party decided to order a few appetizers for their dinner instead of an entree and it turned out portions were large and generous. 2 people chose the fixed menu and they as well were cooked perfectly and were good portions. Service was excellent and server was very knowledgeable. We never fail to have a great time at Roy's.
Celebrated our 25 year Anniversary and Roys made it a very Special occasion.
Thank you !
We always dine here the food and place is great but our service the last time we ate was so terrible ! Waiter took order without introducing herself and not mentioning any special , the food took so long and when it arrived just drop it without a word never came back and ask if we need anything we constantly have to ask other staff to call our waiter ! Such a terrible service ! I should have taken her name !
‘Pretty much perfect! I get together with a friend every month, for dinner. We usually come to Roy’s Pasadena because we love the food and the service ... Always top notch!
Everyone was great. My mom loved the card, photo and birthday cake.
The food and service is exceptionally excellent. The ambiance of being in a Hawaiian style restaurant is good, and the Hawaiian style food is a good change from the typical American or Mexican meals that you normally have.
Food was amazing and the service was excellent! Thank you for a great evening!
