Roy's Pasadena Ratings and Reviews
Donnelly, I have glowing reviews of this restaurant. However, this time we are there for Valentine's Day and honestly, it is about the worst day of the year a person can dine there. One, they crammed in a whole bunch more tables so they could get more people in there to eat. Then, they rushed us through our dinner at an alarming pace. As soon as we're done with the appetizer, they brought the next course and the next one and then finally the dessert, one literally right after the other with no rest in between. It was as if they're watching us which might explain why our food that was supposed to be hot was only warm. Oh, then the price fix menu that they had which we thought was just an option, was the only menu we could order off of. I had specifically called a few days before and asked about the price fix menu and if it could be shared which I was told no and because I'm a light eater I knew I would be able to eat all the food on that menu, so I said well then I guess I will just order off the appetizer menu to which I was told OK that would be fine. Well, there was no appetizer menu, only the price fix menu. The amount of money we had to pay was 3 to 4 times what we normally pay when we dine near because prior visits allow us to share whatever food we order. We could have said something to the manager with the time, but there so many people there, I knew they wouldn't listen to us. Part of me wanted to walk right out of the restaurant, but we were already seated and they were expecting us to order food and we did not want to say anything because of the crowd. In retrospect, we should have just left. And, to rub more salt into the wound, when we walked out, we saw people eating food on their table that was in fact not on the price fix menu. If this is only menu we were told that was being offered, then why were they eating food items that weren't on the menu? We are very come a very upset.
Fresh and wonderful... Always great service and love coming here... were here for Valentines Day and my only wish was along with the special menu for the day, that there regular menu would have also been available. Mind you, the special menu was outstanding (4 course), but for 2 people, each with a 4 course meal... that is a ton of food, so would have liked to get one off that menu and then been able to add just an entree for the second meal so I would not have had to roll out of there...LOL. Thanks to Roys for a wonderful evening!
As usual server very good and friendly and food was amazing
from presentation to that final glorious last taste. Only problem
with young lady seating us but assistant manager apologised.
We had gone here many time and will do so for many more
time and this was the only hiccup.
Roy's is probably the best restaurant near to the Pasadena Playhouse, and we ate here pre-perfromance. Our server was sensitive to our timing issue, and he made sure that drinks and food arrived in keeping with our deadline. The sushi bento box and the chicken entree were fine, but our best success was dining on appetizers: two of us split the Canoe for Two, which including samples of four signature dishes, and three of us split the calamari fritti. I also ordered the pork taco appetizer -- three delicious smallish tacos, but more food than we needed. I don't think I'd come here if I weren't heading to the Playhouse, but it's a great choice for pre-theater.
Wonderful service and food, and friendly/welcoming atmosphere and vibe. Server was attentive/knowledgeable and special kudos to Manager Debbie U who checked on our table several times. Very personable and friendly. She's a great manager and ambassador for Roy's.
The service and customer service was outstanding. The level of care shown for the patrons of Roys in Pasadena was above and beyond. The food was fresh and flavorful. There were many different options to entice all kinds of different pallets. Can't wait to go again!
Celebrated my wife’s birthday with our family. Everyone enjoyed the meals they ordered from the delicious appetizers to the lobster, shrimp, scallops, bacon wrapped pork chop, filet mignon, pan roasted chicken and their special 34 Oz. Tomahawk steak w/ loaded mash potato cakes and grilled veggies. The glass of Cabernet Sauvignon paired well with Tomahawk steak my son and I shared.
Totally great dinner and eating experience. Roy’s used to print a special menu for special occasions, but that seems to have stopped. They also take a picture of you at the end, and used to put it into a small frame - that seems to have stopped also. But food and service are still as good as always. We’ll be back, though may look for other options for special occasions.
Roy's was just ok. The menu items were not impressive when they arrived. This place had a fair amount of hype but did not deliver. The business clients was not impressed with their order either. I would recommend going somewhere else for the money spent here. The waiter staff was friendly though.
Restaurant somewhat crowded on a Sat nite, but not too noisy. Wait staff and managers very attentive. Food is excellent w/ a distinctively Hawaiian flair, but they have dishes for every taste (spicy to bland). Also, portion sizes are smaller and pretty much everything is a la carte. So even though individual items are reasonable, dinner for two winds up rather pricey at the end ($150 range). I would definitely go here again. Also a great venue for a high end business meeting, special occasion etc.
Gourmet entrees, nice ambiance with attentive service from all staff. Special birthday table sign and orchids. Birthday candle on a special dessert presented on an artistic, decorated plate. Wonderful restaurant to celebrate a special occasion with friends and family.
We went to Roy's before going to the Pantages to see Aladdin. Dylan was our server and once again he did an exemplary job. As always, the food was delicious. The manager came by to wish me a Happy Birthday which was very much appreciated. We love Roy's and will always come back, especially for our family's special occasions.
The service at Roy's was terrific, no issues there. However, my chicken dinner was a bit overcooked and dry, and the primary taste of the sauce was salt. I couldn't finish my meal due to the salt overload and, overall, I had a thoroughly disappointing and unsatisfying meal. My companions did not have issues with their meals. I sampled a scallop and it was delicious.
Our dining experience was excellent as expected. As a party of four, we began with cocktails (grey goose martinis) & appetizers (the Canoe & an additional platter of Lobster Potstickers) followed with our starters -- Lobster Bisque (sensational) and the Maui Wowie Salad. Our dinners of the Shellfish Samplers, the Pasta, Braised Short Ribs were all superb accompanied with a bottle of Justin Cabernet Sauvignon. To finish our family visit and outstanding culinary meals, we shared a Chocolate Souffle with a couple of scoops of vanilla ice cream ! Our server, Ken, was outstanding. He was attentive, friendly and professional. He recognized us from our visit a few weeks prior and warmly greeted us upon arrival. We never tire of the menu, the excellent service and the outstanding meal experience. All of the Staff were attentive and most welcoming.
Our lunch to celebrate 2 college graduates was wonderful. We started with appetizers (lobster potstickers, tasty ribs, and edamame) and cocktails. One of our guests decided to have 2 of the tasty rib appetizers as her lunch, 2 other guests ordered from the lunch menus (noodles & short ribs plate) and 1 guest wanted the butterfish dinner meal which the Chief accommodated upon our request. We finished off with dessert and a cappucino. Each of our plates were presented beautifully and tasted even better. Our server, Kathleen, was a delight and met all of our service needs. She recognized us from previous visits & acknowledged us. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals, our celebration and visit. Roy's is just a fantastic restaurant serving quality food and service.
A real gem in Pasadena. Old-world class and service with great quality food and original flavors. Puts a lot of the newer fancy-pants restaurants that have opened up with all the same kind of food to shame! They treat you like family, royal family. :) Thanks Roy's.
We had another great time at Roy’s! Food, service, and ambiance were fabulous. The thing that we noticed differently was when we had our leftovers packed up. We noticed a regular plastic bag was given instead of either no bag at all (no problem there) or a paper bag that we have known to be used in all the times we have been to Roy’s. Other than that Roy’s is always a great place to dine in. Thank you!
I’ve always loved Roy’s and have had great experiences here. This New Year’s Eve dinner was not very good however.
The service was poor and slow. Not the usual top notch service. And we went early so it wasn’t that busy.
The food was not very good. I always get the butterflish, which is always amazing. It was actually fishy. I couldn’t eat it.
The appetizer, I was told was not spicy. I spent the next half hour In hell from the spiciness.
The soup and salad were good and dessert was quite nice.
Very surprising that it wasn’t spectacular for nye. Especially for that price.
Servive and food was very good. The manager came to the table to make sure everything was excellent. I really appreciate that effort. The food was delicious. I had the wedge salad and the short ribs. Yummy! The upside down pineapple was great too. I enjoyed the Bell Gloss Pinot Noir.
The good news first: the service was great. Very attentive staff.
And, now for the bad news: the food is just nothing to get excited over. I ordered the filet mignon and shrimp. The think steak that I received was seasoned well but definitely NOT a filet mignon! The shrimp were large but overcooked - rubbery - with almost no flavor at all. The mashed potatoes were ok - not good or bad. The vegetables were overcooked and mushy. We ordered a couple of their chocolate "souffles" which, after much anticipation were hugely disappointing. The "souffle" is not a souffle at all but, rather, a chocolate lava cake. And, as chocolate lava cakes go, this one wasn't even very good. I've had better at Chili's.
So, all in all, Roy's is not worth the price. It's sad when a restaurant that claims to be "fine dining" serves food that is worse than what you'd see at a restaurant like Sizzler!
Our waiter Scott and the staff was very friendly and attentive. They sat us promptly in the dining area.
Unfortunately all our steaks at the table were over cooked and they ran out of one of the desserts that was requested. This may be because it was on Christmas and the kitchen is pushing out food differently for a full capacity dining room vs. a normal day.
I had not been to this location for at least 5-6 years and before that it had been about 15 years when I went to a location in downtown L.A. It seems that over time Roy's has gone a slow decline from being a true destination for top notch seafood to more of "Red Lobster" type location. I thought the staff was good and the food was decent, but it is just not what I remember from years back.
Roy's is a chain rest. throughout S. CA. Food is always good, but at this particular location we had very average to below average service from our waiter. Since this was a weekday lunch mtg, our waiter took a long time taking our order, and then an exceptionally long time waiting for our bill.
