Roy's Newport Beach Ratings and Reviews
This was the worse dining experience we have ever had. The couple we were hosting felt the same. Our reservation was for 6:30 and we finally got our dinner at 8:45. What sevice?? There wasn't any! It was a terrible experience and we were treating a dear friend for his 80th birthday. The birthday boy didn't even get what he ordered. I had to flag someone down to clear our table after sitting with salad plates for over 1/2 hour. It took another hour to get our entree once our table was clear. How unfortuat because the food really is good and we have always enjoed Roy's. Too bad, we will never go back.
Do not order steak, the quality of meat is subpar. And the cooking was even worse with boiled meat and fake grill marks. One lobster was good and the other was drenched in salt. Our pineapple upside down cake was burnt. One of the appetizers was missing the avocado. And the restaurant inside is like a coffee shop, NO AMBIANCE whatsoever.
We are LONG time Roy's customers which makes this review all the more painful. Our experience this visit was in a word horrible. Our food was under par and the service a
mess. VERY unlike all of our past experiences. We left the majority of our food on the plate paid the bill and left.
The waitress did not know that Roy's was offering a free lobster tail when you ordered a steak. She went back & found out that they were. We ordered a rib-eye, medium rare, & after a long wait, it came, very well done. It was awful, & we could not eat it. In addition, they gave us the tiniest little lobster tail (without butter) that I have ever seen. I have no idea where they found it. We refused to pay for the steak, & they deleted that from the bill. Something has gone very wrong at Roy's Newport Beach.
I was anticipating the service and food to be as equally great as the other locations in Hawaii and the one in Anaheim. We were seated in the bar area which is not an excuse for less service but it seems this section was understaffed and may have attributed to the slow service. We ordered two sushi dishes for appetizers but one was too wet with sauce & the other was too dry/flavorless. Perhaps due to it having more rice than filling so it overpowered the fish. The ribeye we split. It was ordered medium rare but it came out almost well done so it was dry & a little tough, but it had great flavor. It was disappointing for a $47 plate it didn’t have more than just a few thin and over cooked Spears of Asparugus. The gin and tonic was on happy hour so only $5 each which was a great value but it didn’t compensate for the mediocre food and service. Needless to mention, we were disappointed since we were also celebrating a special occasion.
We have loved the unique and fresh flavors at Roy's in Hawaii for many years, and had not been to the Newport location for a long time. The canoe for two was cold and dried out. My shrimp with noodles was dull, similar to a brown gravy bowl. So disappointing. The ahi tuna that my husband had was very good. Perhaps with being immediately after the holidays, the chef was worn out of a fill in was in the kitchen The server was great.
We were looking forward to a great New Year's Eve dinner.
We arrived 30 minutes early and were immediately seated.
The waiter then informed us most of the appetizers were no longer available, quite disappointing.
The entrees were good. During the middle of dinner our waiter informed us she had to leave and we switched servers. Service slowed down, thereafter.
Dessert took quite a while after the entree. Again we were told all our desired desserts were no longer available. Quite disappointing. NO adjustment in the premium New year's pricing was offered.
We would rethink coming next year on New Year's.
Used to be one of my favorite special occasion go-to restaurant but I was disappointed this night: luke-warm miso soup and coffee (both should be hot), my favorite Roy's classic seared ahi was very bland, the butterfish tasted fishy to both of us, the signature chocolate souffle was a bit overcooked (firm, dry top).
My previous rating was error: should be: food 2 stars, service 4 stars
We came here specifically for the dessert (chocolate soufflé) ... the food was just ok nothing special but was priced for special. The service was awful unfortunately.. our waitress was very forgetful and when we asked her for anything it took forever to get anything and required a reminder a couple of times. We had two small children with us and our dinner took over (2) hours. We were not there to relax and enjoy for a two hour dinner with our small children. When it was time for desert she brought it and it was flattened and looked awful and again this is the whole reason we chose this restaurant. Instead of getting us a new one she assured us it would taste the same and laughed. Worst dining experience ever especially for $200+. Huge disappointment.. go to Fleming’s!
The food was great, but the server was not. She was very unprofessional. We wanted an item from the bar menu served at our table, but she said no, the runner could not bring it to the dining room. The manager did assist, and he graciously accommodated our very simple request. After that incident, the server was largely non-communicative, apparently not so happy that we had to talk to the manager. She may be new at Roy's, but is better suited for a local diner. Even the servers at Ruby's Diner are much friendlier! We will go back, but I sure hope that server is gone!
It was Christmas, so may have gotten the B team, but the service was terrible. Really felt like we got a busboy, as they didn’t know menu, food came at different times, and overall attentiveness was non-existent. Very disappointed with the overall experience, and particularly for the price.
Usually the food at this restaurant is very good and service is always excellent. However we were there for Christmas and maybe because it was busier than usual because of the holiday, the food was definitely not up to its usual standard. First we were told that there was only a very limited menu available and all was on a prix fixe basis. They were out of one of the appetizers we chose and we substituted cesar salad. The salad was basically a few pieces of romaine lettuce on a plate. Very disappointing. Another person in our group ordered one of the rolls that was offered as an appetizer. It didn't arrive until after the entree was served. Some of us had the butterfish which is usually moist and delicious. However on that night the fish arrived dried out as it had obviously been under the heat lamp too long. We were all disappointed with our dinners. And if it wasn't bad enough to be charged so much for substandard food when we went to pay partially with gift cards we had purchased we were told we couldn't use our Roy's gift cards. I'm not sure that's legal but didn't want to cause a scene on Christmas and argue with the server. Based on this experience I would no longer recommend this restaurant.
Sadly disappointing. We were there for Christmas Day dinner with the family. They were only serving a pre-fixe menu we didn’t know about. Didn’t say anything about on OpenTable when we made the reservation.
The service was really lackadaisical and slow. Food was served lukewarm and about 1/2 hour after they cleared the salads. They served a “torte” for dessert which was really a brownie from a mix. So gross and I really feel ripped off. Incredibly disappointing.
The dining room is beat up, the carpet is torn. Definitely do not recommend.
Very disappointing for a Christmas Dinner!! Leilani was our waitress and she was quite good but the food (veggies and potato's were cold). I will not be returning as the food had very little taste and for the price there are other places that are much better!!
Food was outstanding, service was great but our server was a bit to busy. She forgot our table for quite sometime. The manager stepped up and helped out. And gave us a coupon for our next visit. Prices are comparable to others in the area. Thank you and I will be back.
We went for Christmas night dinner, and I should have known that it would only be a limited (and very expensive) menu due to the Holiday, but had I known about the prices in advance, I would have gone elsewhere... I have been to several Roy’s restaurants before and the food is always very good (especially their signature dish; Butterfish), and the service was better than normal here.
Wonderful Christmas luncheon! Perfect service and fabulous food made our holiday extra special! Would recommend this restaurant on any given day, but even more so for a holiday meal where the food is amazing and service was gracious and attentive. A MILLION STARS!
We had the Canoe for two, the Lobster Bisque and the Lobster Pot stickers to start, then several of the Entrees and they were all delicious, in fact it was hard to decide which ones to order. The service was great and they had a good wine list and one of us ordered the Roy's Mai Tai which was fabulous!!
Food and service was good. But 2 of our 4 meals were cold due to some problem with our order. We watched our food sit for 15 minutes before the other two plates were ready and the waitress could of bring all meals at one time. It was a $40+ piece of fish so I sent mine back. Replacement was excellent. Chocolate desert was excellent. Expensive.
Over one hour from order to be served. Butter Fish/short rib combo portion was slight and fish way over seasoned. A comment shared by the table.
Broken pictures hanging on the wall. Obviously fallen on the floor to often. Much better atmosphere and food at the Anaheim garden walk location.
We've dined over 100 times at this restaurant, but there are multiple problems as other diners have indicated. The kitchen has become very slow, the food portions small and overseasoned. When you dine at 5 pm, you'd expect that food will not take an hour or more. We had high hopes for the new manager from Woodland Hills, but problems persist. We likely will go to Roy's Anaheim where we know that the manager Tim is on top of things. This used to be one of our favorites but sadly no longer.
The food was very flavorful but there were two significant issues. First, it took perhaps 30-45 minutes for it to be served. We were told there was a large group and the kitchen was backed up because of it. We were later told that it wasn;t that large a group but in any case I would expect an establishment like this should be experienced in better managing such a situation. Secondly, the food was at best just warm when it was served. In fact the potatoes that came with the prix fixe meals was only room temperature. They did bring out new servings that were served in dishes too hot to handle with bare hands but the potatoes were still barely more than room temperature. An adjustment was made to our bill but we would have rather had the food served hot.
Came here for dinner because we bought a deal on Living Social. It was a good deal but the food was just ok. The sushi roll was unevenly sliced and the rice was hard. My salmon was cooked perfectly but my husband's salmon was almost raw. Our server was nice but not very efficient. We will probably not go back.
We have been dining at this restaurant for years. It was once one of the top Roy's locations.
It has declined to the extent that I recommend other locations.
Starter portions were recently cut in half or less-even the greens in salads. Prices were not adjusted. Food quality has become exceptionally inconsistent. The kitchen appears very uncoordinated and the food quality is suffering for it.
