Roy's Newport Beach Ratings and Reviews
Over one hour from order to be served. Butter Fish/short rib combo portion was slight and fish way over seasoned. A comment shared by the table.
Broken pictures hanging on the wall. Obviously fallen on the floor to often. Much better atmosphere and food at the Anaheim garden walk location.
We've dined over 100 times at this restaurant, but there are multiple problems as other diners have indicated. The kitchen has become very slow, the food portions small and overseasoned. When you dine at 5 pm, you'd expect that food will not take an hour or more. We had high hopes for the new manager from Woodland Hills, but problems persist. We likely will go to Roy's Anaheim where we know that the manager Tim is on top of things. This used to be one of our favorites but sadly no longer.
The food was very flavorful but there were two significant issues. First, it took perhaps 30-45 minutes for it to be served. We were told there was a large group and the kitchen was backed up because of it. We were later told that it wasn;t that large a group but in any case I would expect an establishment like this should be experienced in better managing such a situation. Secondly, the food was at best just warm when it was served. In fact the potatoes that came with the prix fixe meals was only room temperature. They did bring out new servings that were served in dishes too hot to handle with bare hands but the potatoes were still barely more than room temperature. An adjustment was made to our bill but we would have rather had the food served hot.
Came here for dinner because we bought a deal on Living Social. It was a good deal but the food was just ok. The sushi roll was unevenly sliced and the rice was hard. My salmon was cooked perfectly but my husband's salmon was almost raw. Our server was nice but not very efficient. We will probably not go back.
We have been dining at this restaurant for years. It was once one of the top Roy's locations.
It has declined to the extent that I recommend other locations.
Starter portions were recently cut in half or less-even the greens in salads. Prices were not adjusted. Food quality has become exceptionally inconsistent. The kitchen appears very uncoordinated and the food quality is suffering for it.
All of our appetizers and entrees were so fresh! Talk about melting in your mouth. From the wagyu beef to butterfish to ahi, so delicious. Everything was served to us in progression. And with very good attentive service. Celebrated my son's 18th at a great restaurant!
I have always been a fan of Roy’s. Food is always on point and worth the trip, but sadly service has been lacking in my past several visits. The core systems seem to be in place to make experiences great (the welcome card on the table commemorating your special event), but the staff seems to not care about the little things any more, instead just going through the motions. Get an order wrong or misspell someone’s name? Who cares, right? Even the manager’s cursory drive by was insincere and unconcerned. Will we be back? Absolutely, but just don’t expect the service you got ‘back in the day’
Sad that the ownership hasn’t put any money into the ambiance of the restaurant. It’s lost it’s intrigue. Staff thinks it’s just a job rather than a high to be allowed to work there. As a result the two orders of the ahi dinner were warm and tasted like blubber rather than ahi. It was like rubber. Sadly we won’t ever go back and I’m being keep kind.
Although this restaurant is on the pricey side, for special occasion it’s worth it! The lobster dumplings were so good and their butterfish is absolutely the best I’ve ever had. I highly recommend Roy’s for anniversaries and other special occasions at a minimum. Heck if you can afford it go often!
Our family frequently goes to Roy’s, especially to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries so obviously we enjoy the food and service. However at our recent dinner we waited over an hour after being seated before we were served our food. There was no explanation or apology. My nephew ordered a steak , medium rare. The steak was medium to medium well. He returned the steak, then was given one that was rare to medium rare but was so badly charred on the outside, it was difficult to eat. This was not a great experience to celebrate a special birthday.
Was really looking forward to this place. Reviews and pictures look great. Started off with 2 rolls, absolutely delicious! Drinks were terrible. Sent mine back, wife kept hers. Drank water instead. Dinner is where things got crazy. Another couple appeared to be having problems with their meal as well. Manager spoke to them and took care of entire bill (probably $200 with drinks). We both had the same waiter (very nice and polite) it appears he quit right then and there because the bar was screwing up his drinks, the kitchen gave his customers cold food..and it was probably hurting his tips. So, after we were introduced to our new waitress, who was also good, we asked if our dinner order was even put in. It wasn’t. Took about an hour to get the wrong food, mediocre filet and terrible appetizers. Manager finally came to speak to us and took care of our entire bill (about $150). We left a tip for the waitress and went next door to Fleming’s to actually get food and guess who we run into there? The same couple who left Roy’s earlier. They too were in search of food and drinks. Probably was just a one time problem, but no excuse for the terrible food and drinks. Don’t usually write reviews but this place is in need of serious management.
The kitchen is having issues. After a long wait for our entres, two of three were ready and we were told the third would take another 10 minutes. Management addressed the issue appropriately, but this is not the first time we have had issues with this location. Other locations have been better.
Very underwhelmed with my experience at Roy’s. Ordered the Chef’s Tasting Menu and the Pork Osso Buco was so salty it was almost inedible. The Grilled Ceasar Salad (which was ordered on the side) was so under grilled it was hardly noticeable. The Date Cake was delicious though and the service was good. I’ve had nice meals at Roy’s before but this was very disappointing.
The restaurant has a nice ambience and the food is tasty, but the night we went, there must have been problems in the kitchen and with the staff. Dishes were left on our table between courses, until a manager finally cleared them. We didn't get our main course for over an hour, with our server coming over to apologize three times in between. It's a shame, because we've enjoyed Roy's at this location in the past. Hopefully they pull it together going forward.
I had let the restaurant know that it was my dear friend's birthday. When we arrived at our table, there was a lovely card with her name on it and a warm Hawaiian sentiment. So the stage was set... Our server, Tracey, was awesome right from the beginning. She showed us a wind list that was half off so we were able to order a whole bottle of a great chardonnay for what 3 glasses would have cost. 3 of us ordered a combination of butterfish and shortribs that was not showing on the menu ("the Newport"). When the plates arrived, the butterfish portion was really skimpy. Tracey immediately went to the kitchen to say that this was the case, and the chef sent out 3 additional portions of butterfish! In the mean time, the manager came by the table to check on us. Truly we couldn't have asked for better service or better food! Thanks very much to all involved!
absolutely the worse experience i had in a restaurant...i am not fussy ...and i found the food salty ...the meat not cooked the way ordered and my fillet had a peculiar after taste . they offered me a $ 20 gift card for my next visit !!! i told them to keep it cause there is no way i would experience the cold treatment again . cant imagine this place lasting long in business . there are a million choices better than this for the high $ they charge for everything . Save your money and your evening ...DO NOT DINE HERE !!!!
Sorry wasn’t a good experience. Waited 15 minutes for service ordered Duckhorn Saviongon Blac wine another 10 minutes to find it and was wrong bottle went back to wine cooler 10 more minutes waitress finally brought back correct wine went to use wine opener I mentioned it was a screw cap. Appetizers arrived luke warm had to ask for Wasabi and soy sauce. Plus bread, then we finished the entree was immediately serviced which wasn’t up to standard. Our table of four plus another in the whole restaurant. Don’t understand!!
I was disappointed that they raised the price on the pre fixe without notification: said it was buried in the fine print of the menu. I expected better from this restaurant. On our particular night, there was an odor of sewer gas...which may indicate a venting problem.
This was our first time at this Roy's. We tried the four-course tasting menu and weren't disappointed. I had the prawns, which were huge and well seasoned. We added an order of lobster potstickers at the start. Everything was delicious and well presented. And we received friendly, attentive service.
Went to Roys for our Anniversary as we have done a few times before. All restaurants should come and watch the team produce an evening dining experience. The service on all levels was amazing as was the food. Even waived the corkage fee which wasn't necessary as we always bring our own wine and expect to pay the fee. Great food, service and atmosphere that is highly recommended!!!
