Roy's is generally pretty great, but on this occasion was merely good, which is disappointing given the prices. Server was kind but clearly rushed, entrees took a full 15 minutes to appear after appetizers were cleared, and the rice with my chicken was a bit gummy and nothing special. Even so, yes, it was good overall but that was mainly because the appetizers and dessert were good enough to make up for 'meh' with everything else. I still recommend Roy's for now, but will be looking close next visit. Not sure if this was an off night, or a new thing.
Hi we went here for my husbands birthday. We were blown away by the sushi. All of that was really good! Especially the wagyu beef roll. Amazing. I got the macadamia crusted mahi mahi. That was lacking in flavor. I also had the jalapeño margarita and it was so sour and salty. Wasn’t my favorite. My husband got the tomahawk steak. It was huge!! But still mooing. Service was great! We had great servers. Overall it was ok. With so many options around I probably wouldn’t come back but had a good experience.
We've dined here a ton but the quality is not the same. The portions are definitely smaller and they've changed the recipe for the calamari -- which used to be fantastic. We still like the butter fish but the ahi is now sliced -- which makes it look like you are getting more when you are getting less. Wildfish now gets our vote for best seafood.
Cold food. Burnt dessert. Definitely will not be going back. $200 for 4 people.
The filet mignon was fantastic, along with chocolate souffle. Drinks are always tasty as well as the appetizers!
We have been to Roy's in Hawaii and Roy's in Pasadena. We were expecting to order fish, but the Easter dinner menu offered several red meat choices. We selected the prime rib and the wedge salad with blue cheese dressing. We asked to split the meal and were pleased to find that there was no extra charge for that service. We also had room for the pineapple upside down cake and espresso for dessert. Everything was delicious! We had expected to receive a bonus 1,000 points for the meal, but realized later, that we didn't qualify because we had decided to split an entree. We were surprised that the restaurant was not busy, as our reservation was at 7:30 p.m. Although other patrons were dining, we were the last to leave. Our servers were very attentive and did not press us to leave. We will definitely return.
Food was good as always, except the chocolate soufflé was over cooked by a few minutes... service was lackluster... had to ask for water 3 different times, refill of iced tea twice, sushi roll appetizer was delivered without chopsticks, wasabi, & soy sauce- which took over ten minutes to locate our server; she was MIA... I was hoping for a more exciting experience for my Son’s Birthday, since it was his first time there... not so sure I’ll be going back anytime soon... maybe it was the large party in the vicinity of our table, but one would think that a Saturday night would have the best wait staff on shift, regardless of how big the party is..
Roy's is always fantastic. We recently celebrated our birthdays there and have done that for the past 10 years and we look forward to doing that every year BUT we just don't go there for only that occasion. Sometimes we go just to go and have fun. I suggest anyone wanting to enjoy someone's company and eat great food...GO. In fact, drop what your doing and go NOW!
Very nice, great server (Jessie). Food great except for dessert which tasted burnt on the bottom (pineapple upside down cake). Beautiful restaurant, great staff.
It was my daughter’s 20th Birthday. We had a great time. The service was excellent. Food was excellent as usual. We love Roy’s.
Invite friends to eat at Roy’s at their first time dinner and all very happy on their meals & services. Made me very happy to din at Roy’s again. 3-26-2018
Had a wonderful experience with great food and excellent service.
The service at Roy’s is always excellent. Food was great, but expected more for the price.
They were able seat us earlier than reservation. Great service! Great food & staff
I had the short ribs they were delicious and Larry was super a real asset to Roy's.
We always enjoy the seafood and steak combo. The butterfish is always prepared exceptional and melts in your mouth. The bar is a great area to have happy hour and meet friends for a drink. The happy hour bites are always very tasty and the correct size. We usually try the special drinks which have not been a disappointment. Not to mention the wonderful staff. Friendly and always has a smile. You can tell we enjoy Roy’s.
A little disappointing! We love Roy’s and were looking forward to the usual high quality food we have enjoyed at Roy’s in San Diego and La Jolla. Sadly the calamari- a featured dish - were a bit over cooked and the blackened ahi lacked the usually delicious sauce.
Try to eat a any Roy’s once a month. The menu offers a great quality selection at a reasonable price
At the time we went restaurant was not busy and they seated us at the noisiest table, they did accommodate us and moved us. Our server Jessie was excellent and she was very pleasant even when we sent back their special twice. We ordered the pork chop wrapped in bacon with mash potatoes and broccolini. Our first came out look warm replaced with a hot one but was over cooked and dry. The third was just ok should have stayed with fish or just ordered two of the rib appetizer they were delicious. This is not the first time we have just had a mediocre dinner from them I will not be back
One of the worst dining experiences ever. Our waitress took our order and delivered the check. No asking how our food was, no drink refills. We told her that a member of our party has multiple food allergies yet they brought out her food with items she is allergic to. We asked for a substitution, yet they charged us for it as a side item. When they remade her meal, it took over a half hour to arrive. Received a lukewarm apology from the manager, although they did comp her meal. Also, the side item she did get was brought out in a serving dish, and since she had to wait so long for the entree, she had to eat the side out of the serving bowl. I would have thought they would provide a plate for her to eat off of. Not what I would expect from this level of restaurant. When we went to pay, I gave her a gift card we had received and she looked frustrated. When I got up to use the restroom, I found the waitress in the bar balancing items on her forehead. Wish I was making this up, it was such a crappy experience.
Tanya the Manager sat us at 9:45 PM, when they close at 10:00 PM. This is rare for any restaurant in Newport Beach, because they seem to close the kitchen down about 30 minutes before the restaurant is officially closed. We were not rushed and the food was excellent! I will be a frequent customer at Roy's!
Very good, food excellent .
Service was a little slow and we never got our water. Other than those two minor things, it was a great experience.
Had hi hopes but this Roy's was empty and food was not great at all. O well
The special "tomahawk" steak was a Perfect dish to share. Wish we had a big dog to bring the bone home to. Dessert was also delicious Lime cheesecake.
Good "date" night with busy hubby!
Seated at 5:00 (opening). Ordered promptly and waited 35 minutes for lobster bisque! Waited another 15 minutes for entrees. Prawns were so salty they were inedible. They recooked it and still very salty and I skipped dinner. Prices are ridiculously high with small portions. Awful food and awful service. There are too many other restaurants in the area that are excellent.
Everything was excellent but the sirloin was disappointing; in my opinion it tasted more like choice than prime.
Excellent service at this special restaurant. Friendly bartenders but the best part is the food! Excellent preparation, and extremely flavorful. Can't wait to go back!
We were trying Roy's again after a disappointing experience the last time. The service was much quicker on Saturday, but our server Leilani seemed to have deserted us after a large party arrived in the private dining room. Yes, as others have commented, the portions seem to have been cut and I'd rather they increase the price rather than the portion size. Corkage is still $20, which is reasonable. The new added pork chop seemed good and the butterfish is always a hit as is the molten cake. Now if they would only update the interior of the restaurant.
Over priced and pretentious, for what it is.
Food was extremely disappointing. To get 4 scallops for $40.00 is beyond nuts. The tomahawk steak was the worst we have had. Extremely disappointing. Ver
We are on vacation and had eaten at this Roy’s , as well as at others in other cities. It was not as stellar an experience as it had been previously. My husband and I shared the Maui Zowie salad- overdressed/tossed and the lettuce was brown edged. The server- who was very nice- had offered to split the salad herself. The result was that I received one piece of shrimp and my husband, about 6.
I ordered the opah as it was listed as a chef’s special recipe. I was disappointed in the mushy texture of the fish. Maybe that is how it is supposed to be - I do not know. The vegetables underneath it were very good. My husband had - and thoroughly enjoyed- the macadamia crusted mahi mahi. Maybe if he were writing the review the score would be a little higher but I left feeling disappointed.
Food was very slow. And one dish was delivered 10 mins after the first two. Another dish was incomplete!
My swordfish came out cold, took forever, waitress never asked if we wanted coffee or to see a desert menu before giving us the bill and never asked if we wanted another cocktail. I was super disappointed as we were celebrating a birthday and that was her first time to Roy’s. Overall it was terrible. :(
We love Roys restaurants but this one has very little ambiance. The food was good and the server was very attentive. The Lobster potstickers were great. The Ahi Tuna should have come with more sauce. The short ribs were good. The Chocolate soufflé cake is not to be missed. We will most likely not return to this Roy’s as there are so many great restaurants in Newport Beach with better pricing.
We had really looked forward to our dinner at Roys. We had reservation through Open Table, but when we arrived 7 minutes early, we were told no tables were ready since we arrived SO EARLY. We were told to "take a load off" in the bar.
The appetizer: chicken spring rolls: good but a little greasy. And not enough dipping sauce, just one smear on the plate. Portion was modest.
The entree was listed on the menu as Short RIBS. As in plural. It was one portion of meat, and not a generous portion at that. We were surprised by how modest the size of the portions were, considering the cost. ($35)
The dessert, which we were told had to be ordered in advance because it takes 20 minutes, was called Pineapple Upside Down cake. It's TINY, it is not pineapple upside down cake. It's a tiny butter cake with a very very tiny amount of diced pineapple.
We thought the server was great, very friendly. We thought the food tasted good. But with the tiny portions and the high cost ($99 for one appetizer, two entrees, one dessert), it was very poor value for the money spent.
We probably will not go there again.
Haven’t been to Roy’s in awhile food is always tasty but it seems they have cut the meal size in half and kept the same price . Food is always excellent Service was awesome.
Although they were busy cause it’s Valentine’s Day. Service was great, we got seated on time, food like always was excellent. We had a wonderful Valentine’s Day dinner here 😊
Roys is great because of the food and deals they send, but they are in need of a make-over! the decor is so dated :/ we also waited a long time for our food but it was also valentines day, busy..
