The Butterfish and Pineapple Upside-down cake are both terrific.
Sadly you can tell that Roy’s is struggling. They used to have a great happy hour but now it’s meh. We got a sushi roll, pork sliders and the parmesan fries. We discovered we never got our fries only to find out they ran out! How do you run out of fry’s?? It’s a potato! Anyway it wasn’t horrible but the food was pretty mediocre.
That chocolate soufflé is one of my favorite desserts ever.
Place was empty.
A well balanced combination of very good food, very good service, and an upside down pineapple cake worth coming back for!! An overall great experience.
A must when in Chicago: Always great for business dinner, decent ambience, terrific menue, superb service. Sometimes a bit noisy, when crowded.
We had a nice birthday dinner for my mom. Food was great as usual. Staff was terrific and waitress bought my mom’s dessert. Waitress also took a photo of us, printed it and gave it to her as a birthday card. Outstanding!
The best part is that my wife has some food allergies and emailed the manager before our dinner. The manager was nice enough to email her back and offer some menu options in advance. That’s terrific service! Thank for another great meal. See you again soon.
A gem just west of Michigan Ave.! Waitstaff was friendly and attentive. An eclectic customer base- families, singles and couples, groups of friends were all served at their own pace. Definitely will return! The prixe fix menú was fabulous
We've gone here numerous times and keep trying to give them a chance. The last 3 times, service was very unresponsive in numerous ways, at least one food order good and as represented in the menu, and it takes FOREVER to get food. I usually tip well and last night, I didn't.
Consistent across the country. Yes it’s a chain, but it’s not a Seasons 54 or Brio type chain. Had brunch. I would have expected grass fed aged beef in Chicago.
Excellent dining and preparation of the best quality fish, coupled with a great server equates to a memorable dining experience.
We made reservations before the Joffrey Ballet that evening and enjoyed many toasts on our anniversary celebration.
We love this place!
Made reservations for Valentine’s Day with my girlfriend who is vegetarian, their menu is normally 30-$50 an entree but that night they had a “special menu” where everything was in the $80 range. They also normally have a vegetarian menu, which was the whole reason I booked a reservation there in the first place. That night they were serving little to no vegetarian options so we ended up having to leave and find another restaurant to eat at for Valentine’s Day! The bait-and-switch tactics plus ruining our Valentine’s Day plans really left a bad impression on me of what is likely a fine restaurant, food and service-wise.
We visit Roy's quite often. For Valentine's Day, they removed several of their signature items. Being that it was Valentine's, We could not go anywhere else without a reservation. So, we had to deal with a limited menu choice. Would have been nice to know in advance.
I finally went to Roy's after 10 years. I purchased a Gilt City coupon, which was dinner for 2 from the prix fixe menu. It was okay, but the next time I go, I'll order from the main menu. The appetizer from the prix fixe menu was just okay, the appetizers from the main menu were excellent. My entree was really good, but my husband's was nothing I'd recommend. The drinks were amazing, and the dessert was awesome. All in all, we will go back and order from the main menu.
We went for Sunday Brunch to check out their options. Unfortunately, we forgot it was restaurant week and they had a special for the promotion so we didn’t get to try their regular brunch menu. As usual, the food was excellent and the service was great. Limited menu options for this special week, but we will be back soon to try the regular brunch menu.
Excellent, delicious food. Great ambiance and friendly staff. When asked for restaurant recommendations Roy's is always at the top of my list.
The food was wonderful and so was the service. Best lobster bisque I have ever had!!
Poor slow service
Decent food but too expensive for what it was.
Our server was wonderful as were the signature cocktails.
The food was delicious as always. The service was great & the manager stopped by to make sure all was good. Can’t wait for my next visit.
We went for dinner during restaurant week. The lobster bisque and salmon were the best we had during the week. We had dinner at 5 restaurants during the week. The flank steak was a little tough and the dessert brownie was a little dry. Overall, we will definitely return.
Main dishes were over cooked.
We had a great dinner at Roy's. The food was amazing, great ambiance, and the service was very attentive. Enjoyed the Sunday night prix fix menu which was a great value for all the food included. Poke delicious and must have Chocolate Souffle for dessert. Can't wait to go back.
william is an amazing server- explain the menu and answered questions swiftly. even asked for allergies which i have tons of... chicken and flank steak ate amazing and tendee! will definitely go back!
The experience was great! I had purchased the Gilt deal for a 4-course pre-fixe menu, so the options were a little bit limited though. It included one appetizer to share (only two options), a house salad for each, two entrees, and one dessert to share. The house salad was not the best to me-the dressing didn't really go well with the veggies. The seafood entree options were the ahi tuna, salmon, and tiger prawns. We got the salmon and tuna which were both EXCELLENT. I really wanted to try the tiger prawns, but didn't want all of the udon noodles that came with it. There were a few meat entree options (chicken and rib eye I think). For the dessert, it was the pineapple upside down cake or the chocolate souflee (pick one to share with the Gilt), but I was taking my boyfriend there for his birthday and told them in advance that that was the occasion, and they brought out hte souflee in addition to the upside down cake we shose. The pineapple upside down cake was pretty good, thought he caramel tasted a little burnt. The coconut ice cream on the side was amazing. The souflee was everything you'd imagine a rich chocolate dessert to be. Their cocktails were really good too, and they even decorated the table with a birthday card and some fresh Hawaiian flowers!
Restaurant Week Brunch - great amount of food for your money, we were stuffed.
1st course -
Lobster California Roll - nice upgrade from the regular crab in the roll. tobiko on top. a whole roll for each of us!
2nd course -
We split the short rib and the french toast. Short rib was delicious, extremely tender and soft, pulled apart easily with a fork. The sauce was excellent we dredged every bite through it. French toast was fine, the caramel and vanilla sauces were the highlight, but there were fried eggs in the middle of the toast and I didn't love them. Cooked over hard, kind of boring.
Chocolate torte, so so rich, delicious but I was too full for it.
Lime tart - fantastic. Like a key lime pie cheesecake. but they use kefir limes so they're not as tart.
Service was rude, food quality was poor, drinks were incorrect. For $500 our table was extremely disappointed and even noted that we all felt intimidated by the large man in a suit that came to “fix” our cocktail when he asked “are you sure it’s wrong? Did you taste it!?” and rolled his eyes.
Roy’s was an amazing experience . My husband and I were running late for our reservation (to the point it was 5 mins before the kitchen closed). The host and waiter Andrew did not rush us and were very accommodating . The food was amazing (we both ordered the Shellfish Mixed Plate ). I can’t wait to do back and try or options .
Excellent happy hour and dinner!! Please continue this service.
Disappointed in our experience at Roy's. It used to be my favorite place about 10 years ago, but I've been back a number of times and each time it is never as good as it used to be. Always loved the Butterfish and this time it was just ok. Knats on the wall and buzzing around our table (manager did discount due to that), but meal was just disappointing and not as good as it used to be years ago.
Delicious and beautifully presented entrees. Quiet and lovely atmosphere. Accommodating and courteous service.
Good, but skip the sushi
Terrific food and beautiful space. Went there with my wife before a show. Never disappoints, the Butterfish is always amazing and my wife loves the Mahi. Shared the “canoe for two” which was also excellent. Cocktails are well made and strong. Didn’t have dessert this time, but I love the Pineapple Upsidedown cake.
Everything about this place: 5/5 stars!
Roy's is our favorite place to eat in the city. The food is always excellent, even when there is a fixed menu, as we had for New Years eve.
New Years eve
We took out of town friends to Roy’s to celebrate New Year’s Eve. Our waiter was rude and pretentious. It was really apparent what he thought of us from the moment he greeted our table. The Prix fixe menu was great overall. The entree was definitely the least impressive course among the table, but the rest of the meal was top notch. For the price we paid, we really should have been treated with a little more respect by our waiter.
Love love love 1988 martinis! Also love love love the chocolate molten cake. Love love love the ribs. Actually there isn't anything we don't love!
