About Roy

In business for more than 20 years, Roy is a bistro-style, Americana restaurant with a frequently changing, handwritten menu. We strive to serve unpretentious cuisine of the highest quality. We use mostly certified organic produce from the local Santa Barbara Farmers Market, free range chicken and Harris Ranch hormone free beef. We bake our own bread, hand roll our pastas and make all of our desserts in house. Our ambiance is retro moderne California casual, and we have rotating art shows that run for a month and a half at a time. Live music once in a while. Full bar all the time.

Thanksgiving dinner was terrible. Our cooked carrots were raw, mashed potatoes were COLD and tasted funny. No one finished their plate. Dessert was good with a funky sauce.
Way overpriced. I had been coming for years off and on.
This makes me so sad. I loved coming here. Santa Barbara ‘s hidden gem is how I used to describe Roy’s.
I believe Roy’ regular crew was absent. Thank you.

OpenTable pictures really over-sell Roy. It's not nearly as clean, hip or "cool" as you would be led to believe. Food is fair, but presentation is barely above a Golden Corral. Service was lousy. Quiet midweek, 6pm and only one guy was handling 6 tables plus bartending. Basically he took orders and delivered plates but never had time to check on anyone. Probably a cool spot 10 or 20 years ago but now it's just run down and struggling. I was offended by how small the salmon serving was for the price. 3oz at best. Overall a total fail with so many other better choices nearby.

The menu was very odd and lacked variety, we walked out after a glass of wine as nothing looked very good. In addition they insisted over our objections on placing my wife and I at a very small table even though the place was nearly empty and remained so. Just a weird experience.

We are new to SB; just visiting. We had a perfect meal here. Two main courses; one desert; a bottle of wine: a margarita and a beer = $122. The food was great. Freshly prepared and well judged. We might even go back tomorrow. Live jazz to (but not every night).

As usual the food was very good and reasonable. We always like the consistency of the quality of the food and service. Also, the prices are very fair, especially for Santa Barbara!!

Wonderful experience in private room for our group of 15. Roy personally called me to confirm he could reserve the room. He shops daily so menu changes daily. I had seafood pasta, (homemade) yummy broth and perfectly cooked seafood. Highly recommended.

I used to come to this spot 15 years ago when I was attending UCSB because it was the only late night option in town besides Denny's. Always enjoyed the food and atmosphere. I recently went back on a weekend trip down to Santa Barbara and it has definitely held up! The food remains amazing and the atmosphere is great. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

The most difficult part is choosing what to eat! Began with the delightful Caprese Salad with huge, lovely heirloom tomato slices. The homemade pasta with filet mignon meatballs was fabulous! Altho, the Creme Brulee was nothing exciting, served plain, no frills.

I had originally reserved a table for 8-10 people, however our number rose to 11 people. Every time I called the restaurant to change something they were very accommodating and pleasant.
They had a back room for us, however we were celebrating a birthday & we wanted to be in their main room...they made it happen. They food, as always, was good; the service exceptional. In the end they even gave us individual taps; our group eats out often, so I assured then they wood get a good tip.

All menu items are home made with excellent flavors. Server was not knowledgeable about menu items, however, we were there just as the restaurant opened so he might not have had time to talk to the kitchen.

We went for New Years as it was one of the few places we could get a reservation. We were basically forgotten once we were seated. It was so bad that a kind gentleman next to us, who was a patron, felt bad and asked us what we wanted to drink and then proceeded to get up mid meal to go to the bar to order us drinks. The food took over an hour to come out, even though it was a set menu, prime rib...a dish that should already be prepared. When I received my meal it was A - cold and B - Overcooked. It appeared that the kitchen had attempted to reheat the piece of meat by putting it on the grill...as evidenced by the grill marks on the prime rib. It wasn't good. None of it. There was live music. That was a plus. We left before midnight and rang in the new year elsewhere.

They did not make it clear that they had a fixed menu for NYE. My soup appetizer was supposed to be clam chowder but had no flavor, no seafood in it and the portion was nowhere near adequate. The main course that I chose was fish and it was okay but my partner chose the prime rib, which was 50% fat! Overpriced meal and disappointing.

Our dinner was exceptional and the service was outstanding! We were all able to hear one another talk and our server was very accommodating about our need for gluten free options for members of our party who have Celiac Disease. Five of us were dining and everyone had a different entree, and everyone was extremely satisfied with their meal. It was a prix fix menu on Christmas Day when we dined, and we felt that the quality of the food and the price for dinner were both very good. The ambiance was festive and we all had a great time!

Aside from a private party in the back room, the place was practically empty when we were there early on Saturday evening. Nonetheless, once we were seated and the orders taken, we couldn't get either of the two servers or bartender to look our way at all. It's not that they were busy -- standing around mostly -- but we couldn't flag 'em down to save our lives. We had to fetch our own setups from another table, had to walk over to them to request the bill, etc. In a word, service was nonexistent.
We had the seafood pasta, which was fine but unremarkable.
With so many other options nearby, I can't think of any reason to go back here. Even if you have a late-night hankering (they're one of the few places downtown that stays open til midnight), I wouldn't bother.

We have loved Roy since they opened, and in spite of gradually-increasing price, have always felt it was a good value, with fresh, tasty food and friendly, efficient, personalized service.

Thanksgiving day was a sad exception. We had reserved a table for two, and arrived 10 minutes before scheduled. There were four other parties, and lots of empty tables. We were given a less-desirable table, and when we asked for something quieter (a booth, or a 2-top NOT in the middle of the room, we were told the tables were assigned first-come/first served so no change could be made. It was further explained that the seatings were not due to special table requests, only due to the restaurant's policy.

- The food was not the standard we expected (again, we've been there MANY times), and this was probably due to the special TG menu. My date had salmon in a puff pastry, and in spite of asking for underdone fish, it was well done, and dry. The mashed potatoes were boring (we had hope for Roy's signature latkes). The green beans were good, but not great. I had the prime rib, which was good, but not great. This one needed salt & pepper, because otherwise it was boring.

- Both entrees were served with a sprig of cilantro, which the server said was parsley, when asked. My date has a very unpleasant reaction to cilantro, and needed a few minutes to clear her mouth after a very tiny taste. Why not parsley? WHO likes to munch cilantro to clear their palette?

- Prime rib should never be served at a dark table. Fat is not tasty, nor identifiable in low light. Why not spend an extra minute to trim off the fat before serving?

- The pumpkin pie, according to my date, was not up to the Trader Joe's standard.

- We were seated at 4:15, entrees arrived at 5:15.

+The flourless chocolate dessert was very good.

+The salads were up to Roy's usual very high standards.

+The wines were generously poured.

Thanks to Roy for opening on the holiday, but the effort fell short.

Seated at 7 with a reservation. Wife and I had a cocktail, which was nice. She had pasta w meatballs and I had chicken marsala. We both had a starter salad. Awesome tastes from the dressing through the main course. Each dinner was less than 20 bucks and the total experience was worth every penny. Will be back for sure

We had an amazing meal at Roy from the starter salads to our main courses to the delicious dessert we shared. We each tried a different main course ( house made pasta with a spicy sauce, pork tenderloin, fresh salmon, bacon wrapped filet) and each was quite tasty. Our waiter was attentive without being over-bearing. We'll be back again!

Place was dead on a Saturday night in June around 8 pm but there was live music which was nice. Food was ok- got the cheese plate, crab cakes and a salad. Biggest disappointment was the wine list. We also asked our server for a bottle recommendation and she said "oh I think people like different things" and wasn't able to say if there was a bottle that was popular. So my mate and I got one glass each instead.
