Dined on Valentine's Day with the special menu. Ordered off of special menu for the occasion. Ordered a variety of foods and everyone was happy with their meals. I had a steak, which was okay - not the best that I have had, but I give them some benefit of the doubt given the evening and the crowd in the restaurant. Will try them again on a non-"holiday" occasion as I hear this is a fantastic place to dine.
This was our second experience @ Rowland. We enjoy trying new places, but I didn’t want to take a chance on our seventh anniversary. Rowland did not disappoint. We arrived early and were sat immediately. Our server was prompt with the drink order as well as telling us the daily specials. We started with the calamari. It was fresh and served in a plate of fresh salad greens and a dressing. Delicious. I had the potato leek soup and the shrimp and grits. The soup was a healthy portion and smooth. Great on s cold rainy night. The shrimp and grits did not disappoint either. They were a little spicy. Right up my alley. My wife had the beef tenderloin. It was cooked perfectly and served with a potato croquet and asparagus. She raved. All in all. Another outstanding experience. My only negative (and it’s not a biggie) would have been the fusion music playing in the background. The style of Rowland deserves a Miles Davis playlist. Or some light jazz.
Food was mediocre-to-good which wasn't great considering the price involved. The drinks were lackluster. The service was decent. The ambiance was nice...though the place could use a refresh in art & decor. Given the great number of other options in Richmond I probably wouldn't go back.
Restaurant week fall 2017: 2 of us. Service and drinks were very good. Quiet dark inside. Partner ordered mumbo gumbo starter and I peking duck. Both excellent for taste and quality of ingredients and amount. Entrees: blackened shrimp bratwurst... and feta brined chicken... Only 2 shrimp for partner entree and tiniest spot of grits and the "half" chicken in mine was the tiniest half chicken I have witnessed. It would have fit inside a medium sized mug. Not exaggerating! It had breast-wing-drumstick but was a miniature version of a small chicken. Very disappointing. Tasted fine what little there was to taste. Not expecting huge but very surprised at the tiny size.
Frankly, in my recent travels to Richmond I've been very disappointed in the overall quality of the restaurant scene. Rowland's was okay. Our server was attentive and professional. The food was good but not great. We ordered the pork chop smothered in some kind of apple coating--it was good but not great. The rockfish was good but not great. There have to be better restaurants than this, and, of course, much worse. We will give it another try but I have become a food snob and Rowland's is what it is--it is NOT a gourmet dining experience but more of a comfort-food extraordinaire spot. If you are looking for solid food (not great) and ample portions, go here. It's quiet, cozy, and the service is good. This was more like eating at my grandmother's house.
This was our first occasion dining at Rowland. From the moment we walked through the door until the presentation of the check, everything was above par. We started with the cheese and charcuterie plate. A thoughtful ensemble of cheese, meat, & pickled veggies. Absolutely delicious. We each had a salad with the creamy ginger dressing. It was light and flavorful. I had the blackened rockfish etoufee. Quite flavorful and rivaled the best cuisine I've enjoyed in the French quarter. All in all...2 thumbs up. We will be back.
We made an early reservation to be able to attend the theater afterwards and we were greeted at the door by name by our server upon arrival. Elizabeth assured us that she would make every effort to get us out in time for the performance and she quickly told us about the specials and took our orders quickly but without our feeling rushed. The meal was delicious. My husband enjoyed perfectly cooked lamb chops and I had a lovely piece of rockfish over mussels and veggies. We easily enjoyed out meal and make it to the theater. The restaurant is close quarters and we were happy to be able to enjoy a less crowded restaurant. Great experience!
So disappointing! I have dined here many times and always been so happy with the food and service. It was a holiday weekend so maybe they were just off their game The chef was there but spent the entire time chatting and drinking with customers at a table and behind the bar and never went to the kitchen while we were there for two hours. The courses came out in a really weird order, with very little attention from waiter, Even the usually incredibly delish bread was sub par this night. Oh well...will not give up but will definitely wait a long while before returning.
