A bit high-end !
Quantity / portion sizes were small. Nice for a small family dinner and all, but for friends get together where you wanna spend lots of time talking and eating, perhaps Roti is not the place.
Used to go to Roti when it was in Burlingame, and loved it. It closed there a number of years ago, and we spotted it in San Mateo just recently so we thought we'd see if it is as good as we remember. Sadly, it's not.
We booked for 5.30pm to avoid any rush and to accommodate our little one. Restaurant was empty, but still service was ridiculously slow. Took almost an hour to get any food to the table. Lamb korma was very average - probably had 5 pieces of lamb total. Chicken tikka was dry and over cooked. Aloo Gobi was also meh.
With so many great food options in San Mateo, this one is definitely off our list.
This is one of those restaurants you will go back to time and again. I highly recommend it.
We had a reservation as it is Valentine's Day. We were immediately seated and served. Customers received a free glass of champagne to celebrate Valentine's.
The papadum was OK, but the two sauces were either too hot or too sweet.
The basmati rice was light and cooked just right. The garlic and basil naan was delicious. The prawns in coconut sauce were too salty, but the sauce was excellent.
The mixed tandoori was burnt, oversalted, and dry.
The price was rather high, but the location is good.
The servers seemed inexperienced. They could not remember which table asked for what item.
Ambiance fairly plain but roomy. Food better than ambiance. Parking pretty difficult.
Another great meal at Roti's; thank you! The service is good once it begins, but there is a wait to order that doesn't seem to fit the small crowd!
The mixed tandoori was way over cooked and dry. The fish part was awful. couldn't eat it.
The Dal makhani lentils were more of a soup then a creamy sauce.
Very expensive for the quality we received. Would not recommend to anyone.
Having been here now about 4 times in the last few months, the experience is very inconsistent. Still no other Indian beer other than small Kingfisher. I can't recall an Indian restaurant that consistently does not carry Taj Mahal and Flying Horse talls. Service was funky, with a communication barrier, except for the owner and son. Also, price is as high as any Indian I've been to on the peninsula. Overall, not really worth it. Will be trying elsewhere.
The food was not well cooked. It was very ordinary.
Excellent dining experience. Highly recommend for very good Indian food and service.
First time at Roti. We are not experienced with Indian cuisine, however the owner was delightful and most willing to help us. The wait staff was most cordial but talk to softly we had difficulty understanding them. My wife and I each ordered a different curry...both dishes were excellent. Overall, Roti was a very pleasant experience. We will return.
Very attentive service. The food came out lightening fast and was excellent.
Roti is said to be about experiencing a feast - a celebration shared with family and friends in a warm modern setting.... I think "The Divas" would have to agree. We enjoyed our time here from the service to the cuisine. We started with Appetizers: Vegetable Samosas, Two puff pastries filled with potatoes, sweet peas, herbs and spices (scrumptious, we had to order a second serving. We enjoyed the dark sweeter sauce better than the other.). Shrimp Pakoras, shrimp, marinated with ROTI spices, herbs and batter fried (similar to popcorn shrimp but crispier and flavorful with or without the sauce) and the Garlic and Basil Naan unleavened bread with garlic and basil (who doesn’t like garlic and bread). Entrees: Roti’s Mixed Tandoori, Assortment of Tandoori Lamb (well-seasoned), Chicken (not dry), Fish and Prawns (well marinated). Chicken Tikka, Chicken breasts (boneless) marinated with ginger, garlic, spices and herbs (Although chicken can be dry sometimes prepared this way, this was very flavorful). Goan Fish Curry, it’s a special entrée which is delicious with the rice, although I wasn’t able to eat much of it. We ordered so much for our table that we wanted to try. Roti’s Basmati Pulao, Basmati rice cooked with saffron, cumin, cardamon and bay leaves (basic rice yet the right combo for the array of flavors within the entrees). Beverages/Cocktails: Mango Lassi - Refreshing mango yogurt drink, which was cool, Bengal tiger- Indian MaiTai (YUM! I love MaiTai’s I was sold.), Mangotini, wasn’t as sweet as expected and very Mango packed, Ginger-Zinger Margarita- straight ginger (only plus for me was that it was frozen and it was a very hot day, only drank half. I tried.), Iced Bailey's Kahlua (which was on the house, was awesome! One Diva doesn’t drink so I had a ball.). Dessert: MANGO Kulfi (also on the house!!!) Homemade Indian ice cream! This was pretty tasty and soothing. I guess you can say Mangos are the flavor of the season.
Used to be a huge fan of Roti when it was in Burlingame. They clearly have lost their way following the move to San Mateo ... it is a different and inattentive serving team (kitchen unclear). We watched the table next to us sit and then leave after no one came back for 10minutes (the restaurant was not busy).
Flavors are still good, but have been significantly cost reduced. The Prawn Vindaloo used to contain prawns, now the same number of ~30 count shrimp. Chicken Tikka Masala has great flavor with nice pieces of chicken breast, although half as much as before.
Will stick with Amber unless I am convinced things have changed significantly.
Had a very nice early dinner, very clean and pleasant atmosphere, food was very tasty, delicious Indian flavors! Great service as well!
Food was decently good - typical Indian cuisine- but nothing special. So not good bang for the buck (they are a ltitle pricier... probably because of location).
There were 4 in our group so we tried a number of dishes. All were very good, authentic, and the menu had a wonderful selection. The waitstaff was very friendly and helpful. If only we could have gotten the 3 year old seated a few tables behind us to quiet his voice it would have made our dining experience that much better. But, at least he was cute! I would definitely go back to this place.
This restaurant is great. The food didn't take long to come out. It was family style so we had plenty to eat. The only downside was they were out of the desert we wanted to order.
So word must be getting out on Roti - Friday night was more busy than we've ever seen it. We've been a fan since they moved to San Mateo, and we're happy that others know how good they are too. Because of the rush, service wasn't as optimal as expected, but we were still tended to and ate some fabulous dishes: the lamb, shrimp with spinach and a yummy veggie dish recommended by our server. We always pair with garlic naan and wine recommended by our server. Yummy.
We have been dining at Roti for several years and were pleased that they moved to San Mateo. At the previous location they always served a tray of condiments/dips and flat bread. We were disappointed that this practice was not continued at the new location. The host was very friendly and welcoming. Food and service were good. Prices have increased considerably and that was disappointing.
I love Indian food and I was not disappointed. Excellent food, elegantly prepared and served in a simple quiet atmosphere. We ate early, before the crowds, and got a nice quiet table near the window.
We followed Roti from Burlingame. I'm glad it's open in San Mateo. The food is really good bursting with savory flavors. It was a great Valentines dinner with two complimentary glasses of champagne. I'm glad there was no set menu like the other fancy restaurants. Thank you.
My work group is very diverse and not really peaky but knows what they want. They enjoyed the dinner and all mentioned how great the service and food was.
We had a lot of changes and adjustment to the reservation and they were pleasant and great about it.,
New location is great! Food and service was just as great as I remembered. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. Can't wait to go back again!
The food at Roti never disappoints. The gosht (lamb) biryani is amazing (especially the next day! I also love all of the different kinds of naan. The frozen/blended strawberry margaritas are good. The samosas are good. The staff at the restaurant is superb. I highly recommend this place.
One of few places open on Xmas. Food was great, nice variety of vegetarian dishes to choose from. Due to holiday, there seemed to be a lack of staff so service was extremely so, though the owners were very nice.
And we will be back! Outstanding in every respect. The place is open, modern, spacious and nicely designed. The food is great and the portions are quite generous. The service was very attentive and well paced. Everything came out right on schedule and the staff were always right there to address any need that arose. The location is great and the neighborhood is quite active. The menu is quite extensive and has everything you could possibly want. All in all a very satisfying experience.
This was my first trip to the new location in San Mateo. Since we went there late on a weeknight, there were very few other diners; so hard to say what the experience is like during peak hours. However, I can say that the staff was very patient as my teenage sons tried to decide what to eat and very attentive in keeping are glasses filled. I also like the ambience inside, but chose to eat outside since the weather was warm. The only drawback to eating outside was the close proximity noise from busy street traffic and occassional smoker walking by. Food was good and did not disappoint but I did miss the quaint feel of the Burlingame location. Would still recommend although I think prices seemed to be a bit steeper.
Really poor service. Not fine dining by any stretch.
I hadn't been here in awhile and I was so excited that I got to go. I love the food here. It never ceases to amaze me. The lamb in the gosht biriyani was amazing. Very tender. The naan and garlic naan were both superb. My mom was with me and I believe she had a prawn dish of some sort. She loved it. The service is great and the food is worth the money. I always take home the leftovers because they taste amazing the next day (warm or cold).
Great food, nice service. I hope they get the word out as there were not a lot of people there at lunchtime.
This is the new location....moved from Burlingame. We have been Roti fans for years. Everything is fresh and absolutely delicious. The garlic naan is always excellent. Owner is always there to greet you. Everyone we have ever taken there has loved it. You cannot go wrong. After you have been to Roti, other places will pale in comparison.
The menu has a nice variety of food to fit just about every taste from vegan to carnivore. We came in mid afternoon so it was not busy. The service was quick and friendly. We had a sampling of about 8 or 9 menu items we shared among 5 people. With the exception of the crab cakes, everything was excellent. If you are looking for a quality meal and need to satisfy a number of different tastes this is the place to go.
We had eaten at the old Roti in Burlingame and thoroughly enjoyed it. So this was our first foray out to San Mateo. The service was first class and the choice very good but the Makhni is obviously made with a tinned tomato soup base that it was disappointing. The restaurant was almost empty so the atmosphere was lacking and frankly it doesn't have the charm of the last location. We maay have just caught things on a bad night and so will return but will be expecting better. For one thing if the chicken makhni tastes again of Campbell's it will be our last attempt!
This place never truly disappoints. This past Saturday was amazing. Loved the food (gosht biriyani, vegetable samosas, garlic and basil naan, regular naan, and more) and loved the atmosphere. The service was great as well. I highly recommend this place to everyone. It can be a little on the pricey side, but it's worth it.
I love Roti. It never ceases to amaze me. I took my friend who was home from grad school here on Saturday night. I got my usual plain naan, margarita (which they made frozen/blended for me), and gosht biriyani (all of which was amazing). My friend had chicken korma (which she loved) and then we both decided to splurge and get vegetable samosas (yum) and garlic and basil naan (delicious!) The garlic and basil naan was some of the best garlic naan I've ever had. The food was great, the atmosphere was nice, and the service was spectacular.
We really love the food at Roti and the new location in San Mateo. When the restaurant first opened in this location, there were significant challenges with the service. I am happy that we didn't just give up, but kept going to Roti and now find the service as wonderful as their food. It is now a regular spot for us as the ambiance and great food provide for a fabulous evening.
This was my first visit to the San Mateo location. The new place is beautiful and the food is still fabulous.
I love Roti. I get take out from here on a regular basis and I eat in person at least once per month. I went this past Saturday and our waiter was new (it was his first day). The service was pretty bad (they disappeared, took forever, etc.), but I completely understand that it was the waiter's first day at Roti, and the food and excellent drinks made up for it. I love the gosht biriyani and nan. It's amazing. I think the service this past Saturday was a fluke as it's usually pretty decent.
My wife and I have been big fans of Roti for years, and the new San Mateo location is just as great as the Burlingame spot was. Even during busy times the service is consistently good and the food is wonderful.
