Always love Roots! Saying goodbye to a co-worker who has accepted a new position elsewhere. She had been once for dinner. Her first time for lunch. She loved it!
Roots is one of my favorite restaurants in the region, and it's my "go-to" place for lunch with friends and business associates. The food is reliably fresh, well presented, and the servers and kitchen go out of their way to accommodate. They are a small space and do get very busy, so I'd recommend reservations, even for lunch,
Many gluten free choices for all courses. Everything tasted great. Generous portions but still has room for dessert. Staff all worked well together making sure you have a great experience. Right around the corner from the Paramount Theater as well making it a perfect place for pre-show dinner!
Hadn't been in a while, so thought we would try it. Service was great, but, food a little lacking. Seems chef is very adventurous with his mixing of ingredients and spices, and we did have a hard time finding something that sounded good on the menu. Many of the things we saw on the menu, either didn't look like they would be good together, (guessing at this, obviously we didn't try everything) or were some combination of sweet and savory. I for one typically do not like sweet sauce, or jams on my savory foods. The salmon seemed fresh, but not very flavorful, and I am glad I had asked for the sauce on the side. The sauce was too sweet for me. My wife had the cod, and again, not much flavor unless you added in all the sauces and condiments that came with it, which drowned out the flavor of the fish. All in all, not bad, just the combinations didn't really work for us. Except, we ordered the flan of the day, which was flavored with coffee, and that was exceptional. Just right. We also had the lobster appetizer, again not much "lobster" flavor, but the potatoes that come with it were good. The calamari, again, some kind of extra sauce on it, and not much flavor to be had from the calamari. Looked like a much more simple menu for lunch, burgers and all, so we might try again.
Great food, very friendly staff and nice atmosphere. Never had a bad meal here!
Roots has a reputation for locally-sourced and prepared food. Atmosphere is fun and the service excellent. As far as our food, the cheese plate appetizer was our undisputed favorite. Our main courses, as vegetarians, were less flavorful. Their roasted and glazed carrots were simply divine but the tofu in both our sandwich and noodle dish were not flavored well and simply too thick. A little more thought in preparing the tofu would have made both of these dishes sing. I would recommend this restaurant but with a caution for vegetarians to choose carefully.
Real real good! Waited a while to go, but we will go back for sure
Wonderful restaurant! Fabulous salads and great sandwiches.
Second visit to Roots and really love it. Interesting menu with awesome chef and bartender to pull it off. Will definitely visit again when in rutland.
Delicious meal & wonderful Service!
We've been to Roots many times and always have a great meal! One of the best places in Rutland!
Roots has a new menu with some great items. Last night we tried the ravioli which had a great sauce. My wife had a burger. The blueberry pie was a little on the dry side. The staff - Mel, Rachel and Kerry are all so friendly - they have been there for years - which indicates to us a well managed restaurant.
We rate Roots as one of the top three restaurants in which we have fined.
I went with a friend for lunch. Hoping to see my son, Ross Lalancette, who turned out to have the flu and was not there. Rachel waited on us and she was wonderfully friendly, congenial, and smart. The food was wonderful although my friend was surprised that the bean dish had no beans in it. Maybe would have been nice to mention this beforehand or give the "special" a different name.
As always Roots doesn't disappoint and is now an institution in central Vermont. The people we met at the bar were as enjoyable as the food. And Rachel, Melissa, and Kerry took care of everyone like family. Thanks again.
Birthday dinner. Excellent food. Innovative dishes. Good value. Excellent service. I’d say probably best restaurant in Killington Mtn region.
I appreciated the variety of foods as some of us wanted meat and one is now eating vegetarian/vegan. There were several options for all of us. The restaurant was quiet although we arrived pretty early.
Very pleasant experience... Great food, service and atmosphere!
Neve been disappointed with this restaurant. The service is excellent and the food makes you cry it is so good.
Outstanding food and service. Tables too close to each other is only complaint.
We were here on a date. No waiting to be seated as we had reservations. Very pleasant, attentive server that made some nice suggestions. The food was delicious-nice presentation. Nicely decorated inside with pictures and bold colors on the wall. Reasonable prices for good quality food. We will be back!
great little spot for dining. customer service was great. food was delicious with great presentation. unique menu items that are fun & tasty.
we ordered the fried calamari, new england cheese board, squash & maple soup, house made beet pasta raviolis, vermont burgers with fries, and salmon sandwich with quinoa salad.
highly recommend this restaurant next time your in the area.
I've always liked Roots. The people are great there too.
First time visit. The food here was fantastic. An hour's drive away for us, but will definitely visit again soon, so that we can sample other dishes!
A creative menu, wonderful ambiance, great service. We had dinner before the theatre and the hardest part was deciding among such delectable sounding range of choices. The blacked carrot salad was a big surprise with about 4 whole carrots sliced the long way and blackened. I think they would have been better warm, and I could have done with one 2, but the tastes were balanced and delicious. My husband's cod was cooked perfectly and really fabulous taste combinations. My pork chop was cooked to toughness despite my having asked for medium rare. Otherwise, the presentation was lovely and all the accompaniments were perfectly balanced with the protein. I can't give 5 stars for the food because of the leather pork chop. Great resto. We'll be back.
The chef offers a very creative menu cooked with local products. Roots is a great place to go if you're looking for something different. The food was great and the service was very good and attentive as well. I'd recommend the poached lobster appetizer for something different presented in an artistic way. It was excellent. It's a small place. It's best to make a reservation.
An interesting restaurant with an upmarket feel. The food was good and local produce was high on the agenda. Service was a little slow and the selection of beers limited. They appear to take a lot of care.
I've enjoyed every meal at Roots. The food is excellent, and we enjoy the quiet atmosphere.
Great food! Worth the price. Nice visual ambiance. Place is a bit noisy, but in a way that prevented hearing conversations at neighboring tables. The place is small, so reservations are recommended. On a Tuesday night there were several more tables available.
The food and service were excellent! The bar area is too small and they make you wait in a small, cold lobby for your table. My only complaint.
Always friendly and inviting - food never disappoints ( best salmon in the city ) and service is excellent. Our favorite bartender must have been off this night ( she is forgiven ) but we did miss her. Hurry back Mrs. Tomasi :)
We were on vacation in Vermont and the B & B recommended "Roots" in Rutland. They were able to seat us early and the staff was very friendly and gave good service. Lots of choice on the menu with several vegetarian options. We shared a cheeseboard and had homemade pasta. Dessert was a tasty sorbet trio. We both had a drink and the bill was less than $100. It is a small place so recommend reservations as we were there on a Wednesday and all tables and seats at the small bar were full.
We are from San Diego and are traveling through Vermont. We love to eat at restaurants that serve healthy options. We absolutely loved the Greek Kale Salad. The salmon entree and the cod entree were moist and incredible!! Highly recommend this restaurant!
Roots was bustling prior to the Graham Nash concert next door, but the service was impeccably delivered. I didn't drink but my son who loves to had 3 drinks and the Jamison was definitely a heavy pour. The meals were beautifulyl assembled, and my only complaint, the polenta and the pork belly were somewhat over sauced and detracted from their crispiness, but that's just personal preference . I however ate every single bit. The steak with blue cheese my son had with caramelized carrots and a very well crisped baked potato was excellent. I loved the ambiance and had we not had reservations for the concert and if I was not the designated driver would have definitely spent another 1/2 hour.
Surprising find in Rutland. Clean. Fun cocktails and wine. Great food!
Absolutely superb cuisine and sublime cocktails. IMO the best restaurant and Rutland area and among the too 3 in Central and Southern VT.
I would definitely be there again. I was on my second date with a lady and she liked it, too.
This is a really nice restaurant with a really great food. It's small. Probably only 35 seats including the bar. I found it to be expensive. I had a scotch an appetizer and an entrée and with tax & tip my bill was over $60. I would position it in the future as a special occasion restaurant.
Our group enjoyed our visit! The food was wonderful, and service was great!
Delicious food, thoughtful presentation, excellent service, reasonable prices-thank you! We literally picked this place at random while visiting Vermont -turned out to be a wonderful experience. We stopped in for lunch and found a small, trendy room that was inviting and intriguing. There was only one other couple already seated but during our stay the room filled up-it appeared, with locals -- but the thing that impressed me was that our host sat us at a nice window table on the opposite side of the room. One of my pet peeves is when they will seat you right next to another table even if the whole place is empty just because it's more convenient for the wait staff. I knew right then that this place would be interesting.
We started with the baratta w/ pesto and micro greens ... delicious.
My wife ordered the Mushroom Ravioli. Generously filled, flavorful tender pockets, obviously hand made pasta, delicious.
When I asked if the salmon was wild they assured me, I could tell she was thinking " of course, why would we ever serve farm raised"
So, grilled Salmon with pesto aioli over sweet potato hash. The dish was just perfect. Delicious. Just the right combination. The Salmon was cooked perfectly, tender and moist throughout... the glaze and the aioli were just right for the dish and the hash rounded out the whole experience nicely. I am not a sweet potato fan but I really enjoyed these.
Throughout the meal the wait staff was friendly but not bothersome...and quite knowledgeable and proud of their food. They described it well and commented on their own favorites....even commenting on how they loved the chefs plating and presentations.
With such a nice meal we had to indulge-
Mocha Creme brûlée for me and Chocolate mousse cake for my wife. Delicious perfection!
My only disappointment was that they didn't offer espresso...but the regular
Coffee was very good!
All in all a wonderful experience and a great meal. We will definitely return again someday when in the area.
