Roots has a new menu with some great items. Last night we tried the ravioli which had a great sauce. My wife had a burger. The blueberry pie was a little on the dry side. The staff - Mel, Rachel and Kerry are all so friendly - they have been there for years - which indicates to us a well managed restaurant.
We rate Roots as one of the top three restaurants in which we have fined.
I went with a friend for lunch. Hoping to see my son, Ross Lalancette, who turned out to have the flu and was not there. Rachel waited on us and she was wonderfully friendly, congenial, and smart. The food was wonderful although my friend was surprised that the bean dish had no beans in it. Maybe would have been nice to mention this beforehand or give the "special" a different name.
We were here on a date. No waiting to be seated as we had reservations. Very pleasant, attentive server that made some nice suggestions. The food was delicious-nice presentation. Nicely decorated inside with pictures and bold colors on the wall. Reasonable prices for good quality food. We will be back!

we ordered the fried calamari, new england cheese board, squash & maple soup, house made beet pasta raviolis, vermont burgers with fries, and salmon sandwich with quinoa salad.

A creative menu, wonderful ambiance, great service. We had dinner before the theatre and the hardest part was deciding among such delectable sounding range of choices. The blacked carrot salad was a big surprise with about 4 whole carrots sliced the long way and blackened. I think they would have been better warm, and I could have done with one 2, but the tastes were balanced and delicious. My husband's cod was cooked perfectly and really fabulous taste combinations. My pork chop was cooked to toughness despite my having asked for medium rare. Otherwise, the presentation was lovely and all the accompaniments were perfectly balanced with the protein. I can't give 5 stars for the food because of the leather pork chop. Great resto. We'll be back.
The chef offers a very creative menu cooked with local products. Roots is a great place to go if you're looking for something different. The food was great and the service was very good and attentive as well. I'd recommend the poached lobster appetizer for something different presented in an artistic way. It was excellent. It's a small place. It's best to make a reservation.
Great food! Worth the price. Nice visual ambiance. Place is a bit noisy, but in a way that prevented hearing conversations at neighboring tables. The place is small, so reservations are recommended. On a Tuesday night there were several more tables available.
We were on vacation in Vermont and the B & B recommended "Roots" in Rutland. They were able to seat us early and the staff was very friendly and gave good service. Lots of choice on the menu with several vegetarian options. We shared a cheeseboard and had homemade pasta. Dessert was a tasty sorbet trio. We both had a drink and the bill was less than $100. It is a small place so recommend reservations as we were there on a Wednesday and all tables and seats at the small bar were full.
Roots was bustling prior to the Graham Nash concert next door, but the service was impeccably delivered. I didn't drink but my son who loves to had 3 drinks and the Jamison was definitely a heavy pour. The meals were beautifulyl assembled, and my only complaint, the polenta and the pork belly were somewhat over sauced and detracted from their crispiness, but that's just personal preference . I however ate every single bit. The steak with blue cheese my son had with caramelized carrots and a very well crisped baked potato was excellent. I loved the ambiance and had we not had reservations for the concert and if I was not the designated driver would have definitely spent another 1/2 hour.
This is a really nice restaurant with a really great food. It's small. Probably only 35 seats including the bar. I found it to be expensive. I had a scotch an appetizer and an entrée and with tax & tip my bill was over $60. I would position it in the future as a special occasion restaurant.
Delicious food, thoughtful presentation, excellent service, reasonable prices-thank you! We literally picked this place at random while visiting Vermont -turned out to be a wonderful experience. We stopped in for lunch and found a small, trendy room that was inviting and intriguing. There was only one other couple already seated but during our stay the room filled up-it appeared, with locals -- but the thing that impressed me was that our host sat us at a nice window table on the opposite side of the room. One of my pet peeves is when they will seat you right next to another table even if the whole place is empty just because it's more convenient for the wait staff. I knew right then that this place would be interesting.
We started with the baratta w/ pesto and micro greens ... delicious.
My wife ordered the Mushroom Ravioli. Generously filled, flavorful tender pockets, obviously hand made pasta, delicious.
When I asked if the salmon was wild they assured me, I could tell she was thinking " of course, why would we ever serve farm raised"
So, grilled Salmon with pesto aioli over sweet potato hash. The dish was just perfect. Delicious. Just the right combination. The Salmon was cooked perfectly, tender and moist throughout... the glaze and the aioli were just right for the dish and the hash rounded out the whole experience nicely. I am not a sweet potato fan but I really enjoyed these.
Throughout the meal the wait staff was friendly but not bothersome...and quite knowledgeable and proud of their food. They described it well and commented on their own favorites....even commenting on how they loved the chefs plating and presentations.
With such a nice meal we had to indulge-
Mocha Creme brûlée for me and Chocolate mousse cake for my wife. Delicious perfection!
My only disappointment was that they didn't offer espresso...but the regular
Coffee was very good!
All in all a wonderful experience and a great meal. We will definitely return again someday when in the area.
We live about 50 miles from Rutland and not familiar with restaurants in the area, so asked for luncheon recommendations on our local listserv. Received about 15 and 2/3 were for Roots. We were not disappointed. Pleasant atmosphere, excellent service and good food. The food is locally sourced and includes vegetarian and gluten free options
We ran into Rachel (I hope I have the name right!) by chance while we were discovering the wonders of the beaches in Rutland. We were planning on dining at Roots, and she suggested we book with OpenTable. We showed up with guests staying at the Paw House Inn, and had the most memorable experience ever! The food was outstanding, and after our meal we booked again for another night. I had the pasta, and had it again the second time. I am trying to replicate the recipe tonight, with smoked organic sun dried tomato pesto and boar sausage. We are foodies from Canada, and it was such a pleasure to have Rachel to guide us through the menu and wine list. She is a gem! What a pleasure it was to meet her. Thank you for everything!
