Roots The Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
This was my fourth time at Roots and It will not be my last. The food is always spot on and the ambiance is relaxing and romantic. I ordered the braised pork, which melted in your mouth, and my husband ordered the chicken thighs, a classic and long standing dish at this restaurant. We also very much enjoyed and devoured the cheese fondue. We highly recommend this restaurant.
Always a pleasant dining experience - service is outstanding, food is very good and always a couple of specials that are very different from the regular menu and always fresh ingredients, prices are reasonable and you are not rushed, which I very much appreciate.
For those needing vegan and/or gluten free there are several options - and again, fresh ingredients.
I definitely recommend - you will not be disappointed.
what a wonderful find! the color palette on the walls, the lighting, the excellent waitstaff were all part of a delicious and memorable meal. the lamb risotto was a rich and tasty meal while my friend's Vermont maple braised pork melted in the mouth. wish it were closer to home...
Roots is our go-to place in Rutland. We like it's offerings that change seasonally, the fact that it sources locally where possible, and the food, of course. And they mix a mean cocktail - I recommend the peach sangria, which packs a kick :)
Service is always friendly. The place can be a little loud on a busy night -- it's small, with brick walls. The management has tried to mitigate noise with a variety of acoustical buffers, but it's a better place for lively conversation rather than an intimate tête-à -tête.
It's almost always busy in the evenings... I recommend making a reservation!
A very nice and sophisticated farm to table restaurant. Our server was enthusiastic, welcoming and knowledgeable. The menu was inventive and unique. The food was served promptly and well. I am vegetarian (vegan) and there are options on the menu, but the server talked to the Chef and suggested a dish off menu. It was great. The desserts were disappointing for me but that is my only negative. They only had a sorbet option.
Artisan cocktails were top notch and not your ordinary drinks. We passed on appetizers this time because we knew the dinner proportions would enough this evening. She got the risotto with sausage and I had the beef special, which was flank steak frites. Both dishes were delicious, and wonderfully presented. Service was friendly and joking, and overall delightful. This is one of Rutland's best restaurants by far!
The food is always delicious and reliably inventive. A wonderful range of options with something for every palate. The service is friendly and reliable. I have never had a bad meal in this place, and continue to go back for lunch with co-workers regularly when I am in Rutland.
Roots is a basic looking "Tavern style" restaurant. It is warm and cozy - restored brick and wood. The tables are small, with very basic coverings, and mostly arranged in a row - one side has a nice view of the interior and bar area, the other looks out on the street and traffic. But the food is creative and excellently prepared and presented. It has an " American style" menu, but the food is well seasoned and has creative accompaniments. Our service was friendly, attentive, and very helpful with the food selection. Wines selection was good and prices were very fair. In fact the whole menu was a very good value. Rutland does not have many upscale restaurants; so Roots is a standout, when compared to other venues.
Lovely, intimate dining experience. Great place to have delicious food, friendly service in an atmosphere where you can converse without competing with loud music and/or tv screens. Love the use of local, healthy ingredients. We're from out of state but have been 4 times and always left feeling satisfied and very well fed. Great bar and overall very fair prices for what you get.
I did not like the atmosphere - small with crowded tables. Three of us had salads and they were good. Two of us had burgers and I must say that mine was the worst burger I've had in a while. It was way overcooked - one of us ordered medium and one ordered medium/well. They were both cooked the same. I believe the menu said the bun is homemade. It was nothing special.
Dinner with my husband. Usually have difficulty finding a table,as not a drop by place. Definately suggest reservations. Always busy and the bar usually is always full with folks having dinner and the fabulous creative cocktails...Peach sangria was great. Upstairs room available for parties. Glutenfree and vegetarian options.
Salads large enough for entree. Never had a bad meal.
Wow, wow, wow!!! Paul and I came to Vermont to enjoy some spring hiking and fell in love with this area. The people are kind and cheerful, and the food, well . . . we have yet had meal that is less than stellar.
When you go to Roots, please have the cheese fondue as an appetizer. It will knock your socks off. It was so good, I suspect I'll be dreaming about it.
Paul ordered the beef of the day, which happened to be a tasty ribeye smothered with caramelized onions and mushrooms. Since I indulged in more than my fair share of the fondue, I ordered the seafood stew. They alter the seafood based on the season. Today it happened to be salmon, shrimp, and mussels. The broth was tomato-based. Perfect!
In a strange turn of events, it was Paul who was pushing for dessert. I'm not one to say "no" to sweets, so I ordered the blueberry pie, and Paul ordered the apple cobbler. Both were okay (edible, but not worth repeating).
The folks who work at Roots are incredibly friendly. They also happen to run on the slow side. I didn't mind too much because it was a comfortable place to relax, and also because I was in a food coma.
I have gone to Roots many, many times since they opened because they offer a couple of vegan friendly options with a local flare. The problem is the past 5+ times I've gone the order comes back wrong. I asked for no cheese on my black bean burger sandwich, it came with cheese. We asked for the seasonal veggie that the waitress touted, order came with fries instead. We ordered guac. on a sandwich it came plain. Places that take your order without writing it down are fine and the servers are very nice, but at least remember what the customer ordered and get it right. It's rarely right. These are seasoned servers that have been here for years, too. Dissapointing & not enough vegan options...it's sad because I like this place, but my patience has run out for the price you pay for a meal here.
Meeting old friends from opposite ends of the state, Rutland was the middle point. Found Roots on the internet. We were surprised with such a delightful restaurant! The service was helpful and gracious. We had a hard time stopping our chatter to order, but staff was patient. We all enjoyed our food and one friend took home half for another lunch. The salads were fresh and contained interesting greens. The scallops were cooked to perfection...crusted but juicy and flavorful inside. The salmon was also delicious...light sauce and fresh tasting. Great coffee topped off our meal.
We closed the restaurant and again the staff was gracious with our slow movement.
We hope to return another day to savor the food.
Have never been disappointed - food is delicious ! Service is top notch and the waitstaff is always cheerful and friendly. An added bonus to the menu is the number of options for those who appreciate vegetarian and/or gluten free. Always a special evening when you dine at Roots.
I was looking forward to dining at Roots because of the reviews I had read and recommendations from friends. Perhaps my expectations were too high as I was very disappointed in both the food and the service. Our server never refreshed our water glasses, took forever to take our drink orders, and basically did not give us much attention the entire meal. The calamari appetizer was bland and rubbery. My guest ordered the scallop special and the serving size was very small. My order of the tofu noodle bowl was lacking in flavor, except for the kale which was very bitter. Perhaps this as an off night for the restaurant, but I don't plan on returning.
We are regulars at Roots. One of us is a vegetarian, the other an omnivore. Tonight was the first time that the food disappointed the vegetarian. Why? The Tofu noodle dish was too soupy. On top of this the boiled egg was cold!!? Mel, who is a perfect server, gave us a spoon to finish scooping up the broth. This tofu dish was a pad Thai knock off - however it failed. The previous tofu dish was so much better. We ordered two special crisp desserts with ice cream. The crisps were served cold. We asked our server, Mel, if this is the way it should be and she said no. She came back with substitute crisps which were warm and delicious.
The good news is that Kerri is an awesome bar tender. Her appletini is amazingly good. Every server is polite and welcoming. However, in the kitchen things are clearly in need of sharpening up. Our omnivore has found the emu dishes to be disappointing. However, the ravioli is awesome. We love the variety and creativity of the menu to be exemplary. Donald, we hope you will take this review as constructive.
