Roots The Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Our favorite restaurant in the area. I eat gluten and dairy free, and they are always very accommodating. The service is always excellent, and was outstanding this time. The lobster appetizer was large and delicious, and my main dish, though adapted for my dietary needs, was spectacular. highly recommend.
Though my friend and I stayed long enough that I thought we should start paying rent for our table, the waiter was kind enough to ask us only occasionally, after we'd finished eating our delicious salads, if we'd like more tea or coffee -- but otherwise kindly, cheerfully, leaving us alone so we could catch up. The food has always been very fresh, very tasty, each time we've stopped in -- and my husband and two of his clients have enjoyed dinner there on my recommendation.
We live in the Boston area, but Roots in Rutland has become one of our favorite restaurants. Fabulous fresh local ingredients that are carefully crafted into fantastic appetizers and entrees. The dishes are creative yet straightforward so the ingredients shine through. Try the Cheddar Polenta side ---one of our favorites. Great place for both omnivores and vegetarians!
My wife and I took a dear friend to lunch – and were delightfully surprised to find such a gem.
The Cheese Fondue appetizer is to die for. All three of our salads were delicious – Greek Kale, Winter Greens and Grilled Caesar – I personally highly recommend the Grilled Caesar.
I had the Emu & Pork Sausage sandwich which was delightful – especially with the side of Hand-cut French Fries. My wife had the Corn Meal Crusted Cod sandwich – another delicious choice. Additionally the Chicken Cheesesteak with a side of Sweet Potato Hash also proved to be a good choice.
A nice Farm-to-Table restaurant serving local ingredients.
Looking forward to going again and trying it for dinner. Or maybe just stopping in to sit at the beautiful bar.
Excellent family dinner! Loved the cider and server Brian made an excellent wine recommendation to go along with my pork loin dish which also was wonderful. Lobster appetizer and Char were also outstanding. Brian is an exceptional waiter and made our meal that much more enjoyable.
We live in Woodstock, VT and were meeting friends from Middlebury so we split the difference and looked for a place to eat lunch in Rutland. Based on the OpenTable menu, this looked like a good choice. It was fantastic. Decor was simple, the service was prompt and friendly and the food was delicious. While we only had salads and sandwiches, the ingredients were fresh and the preparation creative. The dinner menu looks great and we will definitely venture back to sample it at night.
We live out west, but have now been to Roots several times and can state that the restaurant offers consistently good food and service. We have brought family and they too have been pleased.
We also appreciate both their knowledge of special food needs (e.g. gluten sensitivity) and their willingness to accommodate special requests.
Keep up the good work, Roots!
This is my second visit to Roots. The first was for dinner in the fall. Both meals were always excellent.
This visit was for my best friend's birthday....we get together, just the two of us, for each other's birthday and I thought I would try it for lunch. We had winter sangria (excellent) and she had roast beef and I had pork tacos.....We both loved our choices. We ended with dessert..a pumpkin crème brulee and a chocolate mousse cake. We weren't counting calories that day!
I would recommend Roots to anyone wanting fresh food, good service, and a nice atmosphere to visit!
Have eaten here many, many times and always enjoy the offerings, tasty food and service. The bartender, Carrie, is a hoot, treats everyone as a returning friend and prepares tasty and fun cocktails. Carrie is one of only a couple of bartenders that can make an excellent Whistle Pig Manhattan.
Only complaint, which I informed the Host of, was that though I made the reservation a week prior to dining, the Host left a VM the day ( Valentine's ) of the reservation saying our table was booked for another party 1 1/2 hours after our reservation and that we would be expected to finish within that 1 1/2 hours. Totally unacceptable and bush league for a restaurant that purports to be fine dining. Host was apologetic and was receptive to my suggestion of having the restaurant eliminate their policy of planning / informing diners to spend only 1 1/2 hours at their table.
Disappointed because the 'mood' was set by receiving a call earlier in the day letting me know there was a time limit at my table (90 minutes). We had no intention of staying that long, but the call set the tone of the encounter. Tables are very tight together- expected in San Francisco, not Rutland, VT. Food was good, but overpriced.
My husband and I (60's) took our nephew and his girlfriend (30's) out for dinner here while we were visiting them in Killington. It had great options for the vegetarian in our group (not just salads!) and also for the somewhat-finicky eater. All of our meals were delicious and beautifully presented. The service was friendly and great. Glad we decided to go here. Highly recommend.
My nephew who used to live in Rutland recommended Roots to me since I had to be in Rutland to pick up my daughter at the Amtrak Station. We had a reservation and were seated promptly and greeted by Ryan, our waiter. I had the Calamari appetizer, and my daughter and boyfriend shared the Fondue appetizer and my husband the Black Bean appetizer. Cocktails, wine, and beer, served promptly, and my Cosmo was expertly prepared. Our main meals were delicious. I had the roasted Cod; my husband had the Ahi Tuna, my daughter had the Risotto with Emu. Large portions and wonderfully seasoned. I would highly recommend to try Roots and I look forward to returning when in Rutland.
This is our third visit to Roots and each time I realize why I will drive 45 minutes to get there. Starting with a fabulous cocktail is always a treat. If you don't want one of their incredible creations, they will make anything that meets your needs. This is truly a restaurant where I am compelled to try an appetizer, entree and dessert as I feel if I don't I am missing out on something very special. The service is the best! Very attentive and always willing to help you if you are deciding between two items- their suggestions never fail you by the way. Can't wait to come back and order from the winter menu coming out Monday!!
