Roots The Restaurant
Great food and great service. Very impressed.
Excellent food made with local ingredients! Great service in a small energetic setting!
Always a good meal. Good wine list... great wines from regions not normally found.
Roots is an oasis delivering excellent food for all tastes. The atmosphere is fun and the staff is friendly.
Good food, at times outstanding, and very good local menu, in fact one of the best around. The seating isn't great in this small establishment; it feels crowded and at times a bit claustrophobic, but it is a small place and as such on a cold day can be cozy. As good and healthy as the menu appears, the rolls when they came were a profound disappointment. There are so many great whole wheat and other whole grain rolls out there - perhaps something fresh-baked? Soup and fresh rolls could be a meal in itself, but those bland, white flour rolls aren't going to cut it. All that being said, give Roots a try. Rutland isn't known for its restaurant scene, but if you're looking for good food, albeit a bit pricier than many local venues, give this place a try.
This was a nice surprise. We were meeting friends who lived in Manchester so this was our half way. Got the impression it was local as it was very low key with a small bar scene. Everything was delicious. We had the ginger shrimp appetizer and the parker house rolls to start, followed by the grilled Caesar and beet salad, both which were outstanding. We each had a main: The homemade ravioli was amazing, filled with cheese and in a tomato/beef broth with spinach and eggplant it was generous. One of us had the strip and said it was good, not great but enjoyed it with crispy potatoes. 2 of our party had the braised pork and apples with johnny cakes and that was a hit and a very large portion which was gone in an instant. The finale was the blueberry crumble with vanilla and real whipped cream, good but it needed more blueberry to balance the crumble. Very good all the same. We totally enjoyed this place and would go back—
Went there for my birthday with my wife and two-and-a-half year old daughter. Our daughter is well behaved for her age, and we don't mind taking her out, but sometimes when we arrive, the host will inadvertently give a look of , "Oh, God, please, no." Not the case here.
They offered a table, but the host suggested a table with a padded bench, figuring it was a little more comfortable and less restrictive for our daughter. Absolutely right. Without wasting a moment he got her a covered cup (we forgot to bring her sippy cup). Right from the start they welcomed the whole family.
Food was excellent. It's simple, not a lot of excessive flourishes, but the care and presentation are top notch. Although simple, my steak had a bevy of complex flavors complimented by every single item on the plate, roasted potatoes, coleslaw, and a sauce, which forgive me I can't remember now what it was. My wife had the chicken bowl with rice, peas, peppers, leeks, and saffron aioli. She was bowled over by how great it all tasted - this was not your average chicken dish. My wife shared it with our daughter who ate everything without complaint, and loved the aioli.
We had a great time. The staff was excellent, not looking to flip tables, welcoming to our daughter, and the food was expertly prepared and presented. Worth every penny.
Food was interesting & delicious. Our waitress Shannon was great! Will definitely go back when we are in the area
The appetizers were incredible!! However, the entrees were good but not on the same level of the apps. We will go again. The atmosphere and service were terrific.
Roots is always awesome. They have something for everyone no matter your taste. I highly recommend Roots to anyone in the Rutland Area.
Roots is by far one of my top five favorite restaurants ever! My husband and I always pay a visit to Roots when we are in town. We recently had lunch there and ordered their pork tacos, which were to die for. They were so good that we ordered them again for pick up the following day. If in town, you have to go to Roots... you will not be disappointed.
Our second visit in 2 months and both times the food was exceptional. High quality ingredients, great flavor and balance. Will be back next time we pass through Rutland.
fabulous service and the food was wonderful other than the carrots were a bit undercooked- overall- excellent
As always the food, service and ambience were excellent. Melissa was amazing as usual. Thoughtful remembering us and our preferences. One of our favorite restaurants.
We live 1.5 hours away and try to go to Roots for special occasions! We live in an area with a ton of food and restaurant options, but none of them compare to Roots! The food is amazing, the service fantastic and atmosphere is casual and relaxed. It's the perfect place in our option!
Had the same server who remembers the family. I do not recall his name but he always take cares of the family and make us feel at home.
We had an excellent meal at Roots. The food was fresh, served hot (or cold, depending on the dish) and thoughtfully presented. Our server told us about the preparation and ingredients, which was informative. She also accommodated our request for a different table, suggesting a walk while we waited. Good idea that also sharpened our appetites.
Loved this place! Food was great and wait staff delightful. Will definitely be back.
Always enjoyable ! Service is outstanding and you are never rushed - plenty of time to enjoy a cocktail and visit before dinner ( Carrie is the best behind the bar ) Food is delicious and plenty of gluten free and veggie options to choose from along with many local products. A favorite !!
I’ve been to Roots a total of 4 times and I live about an hour away. What first drew me in was the farm-to-table ideals that the restaurant has. The food is all high quality and they try to stick to in season ingredients, which totally adds to the charm of the place. I will say that since the menu rotates, a few dishes that I fell in love with haven’t been on the menu the next time I went. Although that’s disappointing at first, Roots quickly makes it up with all of the delicious, new, seasonal dishes. I highly recommend stopping by Roots for lunch or dinner, you won’t be disappointed!
Everyone on staff is personable, fun and efficient.
The food is amazing!
I had the black bean burger. It was mushy and nothing special. I do not recommend it.
Good meal as always, my clients were impressed and will return.
Our favorite place. Food is always good tasting and service is excellent.
Our first time at Roots and it was an excellent experience. The meal was delicious as were the desserts- good to have gluten free options. Will definitely return and highly recommend.
As always, Roots delivers with food that was amazing. Melissa, our server, is very personable and makes us feel very welcome. Keep going back to try everything on the menu.
Worth making reservations or sitting at the small bar... Roots is farm to table and cozy and quaint and the food is fresh and creative.
We both ordered salads that were not run-of-the-mill. Delicious, fresh, balanced.
Absolutely delicious! Fantastic lunch!
Been dining here for years. Long term staff that we can call friends. Food is always top shelf. Seasonal menus. Definitely tops in the area.
Great food and service as always .
The food at Roots is always amazing! I had a spinach and shrimp salad, the shrimp was marinated in maple balsamic. Mouthwatering!! My friend had a maple tofu sandwich, she loved it. We were able to visit comfortably and our waitress, Melissa, was right on top of everything. Love Roots!
Just about everybody in my family can find something they like here, and it is on our list of favorite places to go out to eat in Rutland. Food is inventive, a bit off the beaten path, but put together with care and sensibility for how the ingredients complement each other. The food is beautiful to look at, and delicious to eat. Our special dietary needs were readily accommodated. Can't recommend anything in particular: the menu varies by season and what's available, and we just pick something that sounds good. Don't think you can go wrong no matter what you order! It's all well prepared and presented. Service is outstanding.
The place is small, but doesn't feel crowded, and the noise level is surprisingly muted. Ambience casual but elegant; feels friendly and welcoming. We go there for special occasions for a small group, or for a special lunch or dinner for a couple of us, or sometimes just for dessert (very yummy and elegant). Prices are in the very reasonable range for food of this quality.
Always love Roots! Saying goodbye to a co-worker who has accepted a new position elsewhere. She had been once for dinner. Her first time for lunch. She loved it!
Roots is one of my favorite restaurants in the region, and it's my "go-to" place for lunch with friends and business associates. The food is reliably fresh, well presented, and the servers and kitchen go out of their way to accommodate. They are a small space and do get very busy, so I'd recommend reservations, even for lunch,
Many gluten free choices for all courses. Everything tasted great. Generous portions but still has room for dessert. Staff all worked well together making sure you have a great experience. Right around the corner from the Paramount Theater as well making it a perfect place for pre-show dinner!
Hadn't been in a while, so thought we would try it. Service was great, but, food a little lacking. Seems chef is very adventurous with his mixing of ingredients and spices, and we did have a hard time finding something that sounded good on the menu. Many of the things we saw on the menu, either didn't look like they would be good together, (guessing at this, obviously we didn't try everything) or were some combination of sweet and savory. I for one typically do not like sweet sauce, or jams on my savory foods. The salmon seemed fresh, but not very flavorful, and I am glad I had asked for the sauce on the side. The sauce was too sweet for me. My wife had the cod, and again, not much flavor unless you added in all the sauces and condiments that came with it, which drowned out the flavor of the fish. All in all, not bad, just the combinations didn't really work for us. Except, we ordered the flan of the day, which was flavored with coffee, and that was exceptional. Just right. We also had the lobster appetizer, again not much "lobster" flavor, but the potatoes that come with it were good. The calamari, again, some kind of extra sauce on it, and not much flavor to be had from the calamari. Looked like a much more simple menu for lunch, burgers and all, so we might try again.
Great food, very friendly staff and nice atmosphere. Never had a bad meal here!
Roots has a reputation for locally-sourced and prepared food. Atmosphere is fun and the service excellent. As far as our food, the cheese plate appetizer was our undisputed favorite. Our main courses, as vegetarians, were less flavorful. Their roasted and glazed carrots were simply divine but the tofu in both our sandwich and noodle dish were not flavored well and simply too thick. A little more thought in preparing the tofu would have made both of these dishes sing. I would recommend this restaurant but with a caution for vegetarians to choose carefully.
