Roots The Restaurant
One of the best restaurants in Vermont. Roots is on a quiet street in Rutland,Vermont. It is not large,so reservations are often needed. Their menu specials in all local produce, meats and beverages. Service is outstanding and never rushed.
Fantastic service amazing food and a wonderful time! Thank you!
I visit VT once a year and make it a point to enjoy a meal at Roots. Delicious!
I brought my friend there for her birthday. The food was delicious and the service was excellent! Everyone was very attentive. The noise level in the restaurant was loud the night that we were there. It was a bit difficult to converse with my friend.
Excellent dinner enhanced by great service and enthusiasm from Rachel!!!
We’ll be back !
Very much enjoy Roots on our yearly visit to Vermont!
I was a huge fan of Roots prior to this visit and may see if it redeems itself at a future date. However this was not the Roots I remember so fondly. Our server was inattentive and preoccupied. Each time she approached the table she apologized profusely but the service never improved. Our appetizer of calamari was outstanding , like always. The entrees, Cod and the Ravioli special, were tasteless and unimaginative.
Don't know if we hit a bad night but WHOA that's the reason for the poor rating
Great Food, Great Service
Menu has great variety without being overwhelming – something for everyone – whether a vegetarian or a carnivore!
Started with the Calamari and the Burrata – both delicious. Generously portioned salads; enjoyed both the Grilled Caesar and Snap Pea. Cod Sandwich and Emu Sandwich were both wonderful. Desserts proved to provide a very happy ending – Pumpkin Crème Brulee was to die for, as was the Blueberry Pie.
And the pièce de résistance was the service – if every dining experience involved a server like Ross, the world would be a much better place. Knowledgeable, friendly, infectious smile, and all-around great personality. Kudos to Roots for finding him.
Looking forward to a return visit – would love to sit at the wonderful bar with the blue back-lit top!
We celebrated at Roots as friends who haven't seen each other in 51 years (high school,) and the enthusiasm of the staff was very sweet. It was loud (lunch time) but the three hours sped by and the food was great. We didn't want to leave, and they didn't try to push us. Thank you to the restaurant, the chef and the staff for making our reunion the special celebration we hoped it would be. Judy and Jeanie
Great menu and people
Go for the food. They're into good food creatively inspired and they aim to please.
Seafood selections were more limited that in the past, but otherwise good food as usual.
This was a great find in Rutland VT! We loved the farm to table food and small restaurant atmosphere.
We haven't been here for a while and always wonder why we wait so long between visits.
Loved the casual atmosphere and superior food quality and service. The staff makes you feel right at home...
The best kept secret in Vt. Ross was a great waiter, food was outstanding and I will be back!!!
Great food and great service. Very impressed.
Excellent food made with local ingredients! Great service in a small energetic setting!
Always a good meal. Good wine list... great wines from regions not normally found.
Roots is an oasis delivering excellent food for all tastes. The atmosphere is fun and the staff is friendly.
Good food, at times outstanding, and very good local menu, in fact one of the best around. The seating isn't great in this small establishment; it feels crowded and at times a bit claustrophobic, but it is a small place and as such on a cold day can be cozy. As good and healthy as the menu appears, the rolls when they came were a profound disappointment. There are so many great whole wheat and other whole grain rolls out there - perhaps something fresh-baked? Soup and fresh rolls could be a meal in itself, but those bland, white flour rolls aren't going to cut it. All that being said, give Roots a try. Rutland isn't known for its restaurant scene, but if you're looking for good food, albeit a bit pricier than many local venues, give this place a try.
This was a nice surprise. We were meeting friends who lived in Manchester so this was our half way. Got the impression it was local as it was very low key with a small bar scene. Everything was delicious. We had the ginger shrimp appetizer and the parker house rolls to start, followed by the grilled Caesar and beet salad, both which were outstanding. We each had a main: The homemade ravioli was amazing, filled with cheese and in a tomato/beef broth with spinach and eggplant it was generous. One of us had the strip and said it was good, not great but enjoyed it with crispy potatoes. 2 of our party had the braised pork and apples with johnny cakes and that was a hit and a very large portion which was gone in an instant. The finale was the blueberry crumble with vanilla and real whipped cream, good but it needed more blueberry to balance the crumble. Very good all the same. We totally enjoyed this place and would go back—
Went there for my birthday with my wife and two-and-a-half year old daughter. Our daughter is well behaved for her age, and we don't mind taking her out, but sometimes when we arrive, the host will inadvertently give a look of , "Oh, God, please, no." Not the case here.
They offered a table, but the host suggested a table with a padded bench, figuring it was a little more comfortable and less restrictive for our daughter. Absolutely right. Without wasting a moment he got her a covered cup (we forgot to bring her sippy cup). Right from the start they welcomed the whole family.
Food was excellent. It's simple, not a lot of excessive flourishes, but the care and presentation are top notch. Although simple, my steak had a bevy of complex flavors complimented by every single item on the plate, roasted potatoes, coleslaw, and a sauce, which forgive me I can't remember now what it was. My wife had the chicken bowl with rice, peas, peppers, leeks, and saffron aioli. She was bowled over by how great it all tasted - this was not your average chicken dish. My wife shared it with our daughter who ate everything without complaint, and loved the aioli.
We had a great time. The staff was excellent, not looking to flip tables, welcoming to our daughter, and the food was expertly prepared and presented. Worth every penny.
Food was interesting & delicious. Our waitress Shannon was great! Will definitely go back when we are in the area
The appetizers were incredible!! However, the entrees were good but not on the same level of the apps. We will go again. The atmosphere and service were terrific.
Roots is always awesome. They have something for everyone no matter your taste. I highly recommend Roots to anyone in the Rutland Area.
Roots is by far one of my top five favorite restaurants ever! My husband and I always pay a visit to Roots when we are in town. We recently had lunch there and ordered their pork tacos, which were to die for. They were so good that we ordered them again for pick up the following day. If in town, you have to go to Roots... you will not be disappointed.
Our second visit in 2 months and both times the food was exceptional. High quality ingredients, great flavor and balance. Will be back next time we pass through Rutland.
fabulous service and the food was wonderful other than the carrots were a bit undercooked- overall- excellent
As always the food, service and ambience were excellent. Melissa was amazing as usual. Thoughtful remembering us and our preferences. One of our favorite restaurants.
We live 1.5 hours away and try to go to Roots for special occasions! We live in an area with a ton of food and restaurant options, but none of them compare to Roots! The food is amazing, the service fantastic and atmosphere is casual and relaxed. It's the perfect place in our option!
Had the same server who remembers the family. I do not recall his name but he always take cares of the family and make us feel at home.
We had an excellent meal at Roots. The food was fresh, served hot (or cold, depending on the dish) and thoughtfully presented. Our server told us about the preparation and ingredients, which was informative. She also accommodated our request for a different table, suggesting a walk while we waited. Good idea that also sharpened our appetites.
Loved this place! Food was great and wait staff delightful. Will definitely be back.
Always enjoyable ! Service is outstanding and you are never rushed - plenty of time to enjoy a cocktail and visit before dinner ( Carrie is the best behind the bar ) Food is delicious and plenty of gluten free and veggie options to choose from along with many local products. A favorite !!
I’ve been to Roots a total of 4 times and I live about an hour away. What first drew me in was the farm-to-table ideals that the restaurant has. The food is all high quality and they try to stick to in season ingredients, which totally adds to the charm of the place. I will say that since the menu rotates, a few dishes that I fell in love with haven’t been on the menu the next time I went. Although that’s disappointing at first, Roots quickly makes it up with all of the delicious, new, seasonal dishes. I highly recommend stopping by Roots for lunch or dinner, you won’t be disappointed!
Everyone on staff is personable, fun and efficient.
The food is amazing!
I had the black bean burger. It was mushy and nothing special. I do not recommend it.
Good meal as always, my clients were impressed and will return.
Our favorite place. Food is always good tasting and service is excellent.
