I found myself at Roots after conducting a quick search on Open Table for a dinner restaurant near-ish to my business hotel. From the moment I entered the staff made me feel so welcome. I had accidentally booked The Chef’s counter but the hostess quickly cleared up my error and seated me at a table.
After perusing the menu I was waffling between the white bean soup and the roasted beet salad. At my waitress Lindsey’s recommendation I had the arugula and roasted beet salad. It was well balanced with just the right amount of balsamic, goat cheese and raw walnuts. Not too sweet which was lovely.
Directly after my salad a large group was seated directly to my left. The wait staff was one step ahead of me and suggested a move to a nearby cozy booth for me to enjoy my main dish. Such a thoughtful offer as I was dining alone and felt a bit untethered in the open area.
Since the salad was a hit I took Lindsey’s recommendation again and had the salmon with roasted fingerling potatoes. The salmon was crispy on the outside and perfectly done inside and the serving size of potatoes was very generous. Delicious!
I’m not sure which coffee roaster Roots uses but the coffee was superb. The Madagascar vanilla creme brûlée...perfect...with a crispy warm top and creamy center. It arrived with sweet little cookies. A mini biscotti for dipping in that amazing coffee and a snickerdoodle which plunged me right back to my childhood.
The young man supporting Lindsey was on point with water, fresh linens, flatware, etc. The entire staff was highly focused on the guests.
Great experience all around!
The service was wonderful. I cannot rave enough about he taste of the food. Hey have a spectacular drink menu.
I took my husband out to dinner to thank him for his help with a non-profit project. He had the special...rack of lamb and was very happy. We both had a wonderful glass of red wine with good fresh bread before our salad arrived. I had a delicious minestrone as my main course. The servers were attentive and the place was comfortable. I asked for a light dressing on my salad, my husband did not. He felt his salad was over-dressed and I should have asked for extremely light dressing. Overall we both enjoyed the experience and would eat there again with an change in how we order salad.
First time at roots in several years glad to see it is still as good as ever. A true neighborhood gem. Good Service great food, the Scallops were divine.
Always outstanding! Our go-to restaurant for special occasions!
Great experience, the staff was well versed and very attentive and the menu was full of fresh and seasonal dishes
Always have a great meal with superb service.
Roots as never let us down. Consistently great staff all around from the time you are greeted to meeting your waiter to the person who good off your water or brings the bread...just our best goto local eatery....love this place!
Always a great place to dine!
We were a little disappointed in our meals. I had the asparagus risotto , and my husband had the seafood pasta dish. My risotto was just okay; and my husband said the same about his
meal. His was very very salty.
We were a party of four and we went for Sunday Brunch. I was impressed with the quality of the food and how each plate was served. However, service seemed less than acceptable. I ordered a hamburger and it arrived without any condiments. Mustard and catchup never made it to the table.
My water glass was empty for most of the time I was enjoying my meal.
I was dining alone on a business trip and found this place on OT. It was wonderful! I was eating light and the avocado and Dungeness crab appetizer shown was amazing really nice piquant vinaigrette set it off well. I also had lentil soup which was excellent. Since i had room, i splurged on warm toffee cake with ice cream, definitely worth the calories. Side note: i was staying at a Portland airport hotel and this was only a 15 minute drive away. I'll be back.
Outstanding service - knowledgeable and attentive waitstaff. Food perfectly prepared and presented with god portions. Wine selection good and not outrageously priced. Foraged mushroom ragout with roasted root vegetables was outstanding and salmon was done to perfection. Dessert appropriately rich for Valentine’s!
Nothing n Vancouver exceeds Roots and easily amongst the top five in the area.
We've been to Roots a number of times and never disappointed. As usual, the dining experience was a delight in every way. We think this is probably the best restaurant in the Vancouver area. Recommended without hesitation.
Had Valentine's dinner w/my husband at Roots. We were seated in a side room which we'd never seen. It was MUCH quieter there which was helpful as my spouse has some hearing challenges. We each ordered the soup du jour which was tasty but a little on the salty side. I had grilled sea scallops with other sides as I'm on a gluten free meal plan right now. Husband had roasted chicken; grilled to perfection and WAY too much food for one meal. Wish I'd had MORE than 5 scallops - they were yummy but definitely would have loved more.
He opted for their lemony cheesecake which was super light. I had their flourless chocolate cake which was more like a candy bar & didn't match my expectations. Will likely forgo the extra calories / cost in the future. Meals here are on the pricier side but the quality is excellent.
Great atmosphere and creative menu. Highly recommend.
This is a drive for us and it has been a year since we have been here. The first time was excellent. The second time was excellent!
Roots is our go-to location for work dinners and small events. We went for Sunday Brunch with some friends from out-of-town, and it was fantastic. Service and food were phenomenal, the fork and knife biscuit and brioche french toast were really terrific. We will continue to go to Roots for business dinners, and have now added to our Sunday brunch places. Thanks for a great experience and good food.
Went for brunch and the meal was yummy. We asked for some slight off the menu shifts and they happily accommodated. A terrific place!!
We enjoyed great food and excellent service. Plenty of good choices on the menu and a very good wine list.
We chose Roots for this years Christmas Eve dinner and it was fantastic! Would highly recommend Roots for that nice evening out!
I have been here several times - always great!
Excellent service, great food.
Our filet mignon and rack of lamb were superb. The veggie accompaniment was also excellent! The spinach salad was amazing. Our servers were excellent—didn’t hover but were there when we needed them.
We tried three cocktails from the bar menu—good but not excellent. The creme brûlée was average.
We will be returning soon, very soon—the food is too good not to.
over the years we have dined at Roots it never fails to deliver at really high quality meal.
My meal was served 10 minutes later than my guests. Worse food I have ever experienced there. Crowded in too many tables in the banquet room. I was squished between table and wall. I was embarrassed I took my guests here for Thanksgiving.
Lovely. We thoroughly enjoyed Thanksgiving
Enjoyed a unique avocado & crab 'salad' that was so delicately seasoned, my tongue couldn't stop smiling. I wish there had been a few more 'greens' to go with it but the overall dish was stunning to look at and delicious to eat. The quiet in the restaurant during lunch was much appreciated too. It's usually a bit too noisy for me at dinner.
Excellent experience. Consistently well presented food with attention to detail, both in appearance and seasoning.
One of the best steaks ever and loved the onion tart appetizer
Great place in Vancouver! Taste, service, ambience are especially great
Didn't honor a groupon that said never expired. Unfortunate
As always a great meal, superb service, and a quality evening with friends!
The food was delicious. My wife started with the tomato soup & I had the Caesar salad with anchovies. We shared the large rib-eye steak with mashed potatoes and peas.
The entre was prepared perfectly. We shared
the fresh peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream for dessert.
Exceptional service!! Advised on what to order to accommodate my inability to decide, my waiter even literally went and got me a paper while waiting for my cocktail to be prepared.....will defiantly return.
Roots is consistently good and that is why we always return. The servers are very knowledgeable and accommodating . The food is interesting and the menu changes seasonally, while the favorites remain.
It was a tad noisier than I expected. Nonetheless the food was delicious and the bussers and our server, Keith, went above and beyond our entire dinner. Highly recommend this place.
We were visiting the Vancouver area and also celebrating an anniversary. Roots came highly recommended and didn't disappoint. Everything from cocktails through dessert was outstanding! What we liked the most was not being rushed. Very friendly and respectful wait staff that allowed us to take our time; comfort is a priority. Fresh, imaginative food and ambiance also make it a very special place.
Great local gem!
I've always had interesting and well prepared food at Roots and this visit was no exception. The halibut was lovely and my companion loved his salmon.
