What Insiders Are Saying
Root & Bone in the East Village is Southern food done right. Hit it for dinner, hit it for brunch, hit it for takeout. Whatever you do, just hit it.
Service and food were excellent and enjoyable. Only down side was that the air-conditioning was severely lacking, leaving you uncomfortable and impacted on the dining experience
Omg what an amazing place. I generally have high expectations and Root & Bone crushed it. Great service even when at full capacity. Noise levels inside were moderate, but we could still have a great conversation. Friends who came for brunch who didn't eat eggs had tons of options. Highly recommend. Eat the shrimp and grits, and get the chicken and mini waffles. Syrups are a treat.
Get the biscuits and fried chicken, if you don't get these 2 things you ordered wrong
My new favorite place to eat in NYC. The food was amazing, the drinks were superb (Old fashioned with Elijah Craig - perfect) and the service was perfect! Thank you Root and Bone!
For a restaurant with such a reputation for fried chicken it failed miserably. The chicken is not made to order, it’s cooked in advance and just sits there until served. One huge wing was almost white and completely under cooked. The meal began so promising with great salads served. It was a beautiful evening outdoors except for the food. What a shame. Final bill was $146.00 without tip. Another lousy Manhattan restaurant experience. I’ve lived here 32 years and it’s always hit or miss and what an expensive miss.
I live outside of the U.S and my daughter's favorite American food is fried chicken with waffles. We went here with a big group of family and friends. She loved the meal and I tried grits for the first time and loved them (with shrimp, perfectly seasoned and cooked). It was a fun meal and the service was great! The price I found a bit high, but we will return there during our next visit to NYC.
Great fried chicken and I'd love to know the recipe for the whiskey syrup for the waffles. The half chicken and cheddar waffles was just enough to split between two people.
Amazing comfort food and great cocktails. Biscuits are a MUST
Awesome food, great ambiance and the service was also very good. Would definitely recommend.
I loved everything. Just parking is my only complaint but thats nothing it was worth it.
Great GF options! And generally very delicious. Drinks are excellent too.
I had never heard of the restaurant before, however was attending a theatre performance nearby. It was a really pleasant surprise -- great service and delicious food and nice atmosphere. Will definitely return!
Had the waffle benedict ... waffles were a little too small and soft and eggs a little too runny. Biscuit side dish was a little harder than I would have expected of fresh biscuits and coated with light salt, which I didn't care for. Personal taste, not the restaurants fault. Overall, service was good, place looks cool and authentic and if I go again, I would order something else.
Nice place food can be inconsistent. But overall tasty nice atmosphere.
Cozy, friendly and inviting. Great Bloody Mary's and the fried chicken and meatloaf were a 10. I would highly recommend.
Excellent! Best biscuits and Mac and cheese!!!
Poor quality food! Not edible. Bad food dining experience. Quite expensive for what was presented.
Great food, great atmosphere. Brought my girlfriend here for our 100 day anniversary.
Our waiter Johnny was super cool and knowledgeable about the food we ate. Really interesting takes on southern comfort food; amazingly delicious.
Nice place but the food was disappointing (spicy dressing on the salad!) and we waited our meals for 45mn after ordering.
Great fried chicken.
Best fried chicken in town. Also definitely get the grits! Good cocktails too. One of our favorites.
Great place. Fun menu
Southern soul food. I can’t complain. At worse the chicken breast way slightly dry, but if you have ever cooked on yourself it is just the nature of the beast. The portions are big and the price is reasonable. If I come back to the neighborhood I will eat there again.
Perfect for pre-theater dinner if you are seeing a show at the Phoenix Theatre Ensemble directly across the street. Great chicken, interesting sides and a nice drink menu. Fun and lively with friendly, efficient service.
Did not live up to the hype. Not sure how the ratings are so high. The only thing worth eating was the waffle. The chicken, macaroni and cheese, and grits were overpriced and forgettable. The oysters were downright bad. Very disappointed.
big portions... chicken was a bit dry. i should have gotten the dark meat. it was on my mind to do so, but forgot when the server came to take the order. i wish portions are smaller so that we can try more items on their menu. of course, the price should reflect the smaller portions.
The menu is different for the almost generic menus now populating NYC. Fried oysters, half a fried chicken and grits with pimento cheese--all shared--left us more than satisfied. Cocktails surprising good. Worth going out of the way for.
Root and Bone had incredible food and drinks and the atmosphere was wonderful.
Went to Root and Bone to celebrate my nephew's birthday. We ordered the family meal which was more than enough food. The chicken, mac and cheese, biscuits, salad and salads were excellent. The deviled eggs were a little too "pickley" for my taste and, let's face it, collard greens are an acquired taste. The cocktails we ordered were delicious. Service was great. My only complaint is that we were sat outside and there were no heaters. Also when I made a reservation I stated that we were celebrating a birthday however that was not acknowledged (maybe this is something the restaurant doesn't do).
The servers couldn’t be nicer so I want to say I loved the place...it’s just that I’ve had such better chicken and waffles elsewhere. Waffles were tasty, chicken was a little blah. Sides were good, I wouldn’t say exceptional. Gotta up the flavor overall!
While the food was not as good as I have had in the past; the service was excellent. Unfortunately the half-chicken was lukewarm; it should be piping hot. The biscuits were fabulous as usual, but the carmel latte was not hot either. They need to return to their "roots" in order for me to return.
There was a black out at the restaurant while we were there - but it was Friday the 13th, so probably not the resto’s fault.
They brought my date’s drink about 15 mins before mine, which I thought was strange given we were sitting at the bar.
Otherwise, it was a great experience. Deviled eggs are great, shrimp and grits are some of my favorite. Chicken was a little dryer than I remember but still tasty.
Great environment generally - sit at the back bar if you can!
The food, service and atmosphere was incredible. The biscuits are SO good. The chicken is delightfully seasoned and its so tasty. You've got to try the hurricane tea! It's incredible! It's quaint and cozy. The food came out quicker than expected.
Highly recommend the friend chicken (gf available with almond flour)! Sides of grits and coleslaw were excellent, as was the lemon meringue dessert!
I brought my husband here over the weekend for his birthday dinner. He loves southern food and I knew this would be a hit for him. He got the fried chicken dish with macaroni and cheese, while I got the meatloaf (gluten free version). Both our meals were so tasty. We also ordered the biscuits gluten free. When I say these were the best biscuits I have ever had, I am not exaggerating. I don't know how they made something that delicious that was also gluten free. My husband was equally impressed. Needless to say, we will be back again for sure! Highly recommend this place. Can't wait to try it for brunch.
Perfect, comforting, brunch! And the space was extremely cute. Will go back!
Took my mom and we had such a nice time. Come hungry, you won’t regret it
Cute little place! Friendly staff who are on top of things throughout your dine. Table seating as well as bar seating. Table seating in the back is a bit tight, so you can’t have a private conversation and eating space is limited.
MUST order the friend chicken. Wish it could’ve been more crispy, same goes for the waffles.. but they were delicious in taste. Also ordered the Mac and cheese, which were nice and cheesy. Not dry at all. If you have room, order the biscuits.. they serve it with some honey that makes it all just melt in your mouth!
Wasn’t too impressed with the drinks, But they were heavy on the pour which is always a great thing.
PS* make reservations.
If you arrive early, your not able to sit at the bar and drink while you wait to be seated, bar seating is full service, but the workers do offer to grab your drink for you while you wait by the door.
Love this place. My 1st date was at root & bone & now we’re married.
Bday brunch great service delicious food
