Roost Café and Bistro Ratings and Reviews
Went for their German night. The food was less than mediocre and very disappointing. The waiter was very apologetic and wanted to hear my feedback. He comped our meals but I would hesitate to go back. There was a choice of only two entrees and I would have hoped they'd both be exceptional.
Very disappointed in German food night. After living in Germany, we looked forward to the meal. The sauerbraten had no gravy - it's a pot roast, why no gravy? There was no "sour" in the flavor so it mustn't have marinated very long. The German potato salad was sliced warm potatoes and the cabbage was a few red cabbage leaves. There are plenty of good sauerbraten recipes on the web. The weinerschnitzel was OK. The spaetzle was bland. Dessert was good. We think we'll go back on a night when they don't have international food night. The atmosphere and service was good.
Our first but by no means last visit to Roost. Have wanted to try this restaurant but never seemed to be there when they were open. From arrival to when we left, our experience was warm, welcoming and the food was fabulous. Our waitress Paula was fantastic and made us feel like we were old friends. We weren't rushed and the sounds of the fireplace added to the ambiance. Best Foccacia bread ever! Great menu, great service, great restaurant, go!
fish and chips are not that good at all. they should not buy frozen fish to cook for fried fish. the batter was awful because it was too thick and no flavor at all. fish should have come from the ocean in fresh. fry the fish should have been made by with flour, milk and eggs. must cook with real vegetable oil. french fries also tasted terrible because it has no flavor at all just thick oil in it. need to work on that before serving for customers coming in restaurant. the setting in restaurant is beautiful and great.. very relaxing. love the fireplace. need to work on food more and must taste it before serving for customers for flavor espically for fish and chips.
It was a late winter evening with light snow swirls from the cold wind. Inside in the bar area it was warm and cozy . We had an Open Table reservation for a high table there. We started with a glass of Chardonnay. Aldo, one of the proprietors came by our table to say hello to welcome us.
We started with an iceberg lettuce wedge, followed by tender fried calamari and a lobster quesadillas for our main course. We had flan for dessert.
Everything was delicious and well presented. We highly recommend it for a great dining experience!
Wonderful evening catching up with an old friend. The food was excellent and the service was impeccable. Have been there for both lunch and dinner and have never been disappointed. Looking forward to bringing new friends to experience this wonderful restaurant.
Lisa gave us great service; friendly and professional. Her colleagues also were attentive and worked as a real team. The decor is warm and inviting; real character. The food was delicious- fresh, healthy and innovative. Loved the muscles in curry sauce served over French fries. The Pad Thai was fabulous. Wine list was diverse. We've already returned to this little gem! Recommend.
We stopped by on a cold winter's night as only customers fairly late in the evening. So attention and service were great, but we were never rushed. We started with drinks and then my wife and I shared a clam chowder and we both ordered the lamb shank special. The lamb was beautifully done, a generous portion and a fine polenta with veggie sauce. In fact, and I don't say this often, the portions were too large...so yesterday we had a fine stew for dinner at home. Our server Lisa was helpful, particularly when I asked to have some salt reductions. We'veen been to the Roost several times since it took over for Provence. It is a rather cozy restaurant with its main room featuring a fireplace. I tend to prefer lighter French cooking and dearly wish there had been duck on the menu, but one can't have everything. I was also pleased to see how clean the parking lot was, and to find slots for handicap parking, which we needed....a good new feature.
This was our first non-holiday meal here and it was a bit of a mixed review. We both had salads , chopped for my hubby and the winter kale salad for me. The salads and the homemade bread were both very good. The service was attentive and prompt. My husband had the fish and chips which was different than he expected it to be, but he enjoyed it. I had the squash tortellini which was more sauce than tortellini that were small and a bit dry. Not the best dish I have had there. The desert was good, a couple of mini chocolate rounds layered, good, but not quite what was described. Overall it was a good dinner, just not really as good as we have had there in the past. We will go back, but would try a different dish next time.
Was disappointed to find that the NYE menu was different than the posted menu and did not have a vegetarian entree. The usual menu has a vegetarian entree and I purposely included a note with our reservation which stated that there was a vegetarian in our party. I would have liked to have been informed of the change before we arrived.
This was our third time attending this great restaurant in the past year. They ambiance is wonderful and the staff is so friendly and attentive. We ate in the bar area high top tables which offers an upscale bar type menu or of the formal dining menu. They also have their own parking lot which is rare on that street. Great little place, will definitely go back
Love love love this place. My daughter and I visit Ogunquit in the summer and always go here. This year we spent Christmas by the sea and had Christmas Eve dinner here...which was a perfect evening. Food was spectacular, our waitress awesome, and the setting beautiful! Thank you to all who work at Roost for making this holiday so wonderful!!!
My wife and I have have been regulars at Roost for the better part of the past year and have always enjoyed our meals. They recently hired a new culinary team and introduced a new menu while keeping some of the old favorites (for instance - Cuban black bean soup braised pork with rice & black beans). We dined there on Friday night - my wife had the house aged strip steak and I had the Bison short ribs. Both meals were great and I honestly think that the short ribs were the best I have ever had. We typically eat in the bar area which we find to be very welcoming. Chris is the friendly bartender who also waits on the tables in the bar area. I would be remiss not to mention the owners, Rob & Aldo, who truly care about each and every one of their customers. I highly recommend Roost.
Went for Thanksgiving: limited menu, which was expected.
Order 3 Turkey plates & 2 prime ribs. Waiter disappeared for 40 minutes. No bread or food for 90 minutes. I asked the waiter 2 times where our food was. "it's coming" 7 tables sat, got food, ate, paid their bill and left. Us - no food.
Let's review: Turkey pre cooked
Stuffing pre cooked, mash potatoes pre cooked, gravy pre made. Prime rib pre cooked in the oven for hours before opening. Salad prepped before opening.
I finally went to the front desk and made some noise. We were given two bottles of free wine and half a dozen apologies. Food came, luke warm, prime rib nothing eventful, bland. Stuffing way to much garlic.
We literally were falling asleep with boredom waiting for our food and couldn't wait to leave.
They did apologize many times and the wine was nice, but the food wasn't even worth the wait.
Your mileage may vary, but I won't revisit this establishment. The waiter could have fixed it 40 minutes in (he was old enough to know better - 50's).
Being a resident of Ogunquit ME, Roost is no secret to us. What is unfortunate however, if that although the food is good, it always arrives barely warm. The mash potatoes were like plaster cold and tasteless. One waitress serviced an entire room or ten tables during Thanksgiving. She was running her tail off, but wasn't keeping up which was the reason the food arrived cold. I'd have to rethink Roost in the future specifically on a holiday. Sorry.
Came all the way from vt, very excited about thanksgiving dinner but our experience was not good. Food was barely warm, sent back twice and was still barely warm. Mash potatoes were stiff and the vegetables weren't cooked through. Extremely disappointed in the food, nothing like we had had in the past. Also would have liked to talk to owner instead the waitress told us my husband's meal was on the house and was sorry our meal was so bad on thanksgiving. We were dissapointed that we weren't given another option form the menu, truly dissapointed in the over all experience of your restaurant. Won't be back.
We've passed Roost so many times and finally tried it this week. As it was a Sunday and off-season the restaurant was quiet which was so nice as we were catching up with friends. The kitchen was willing to alter dishes to meet our dietary desires and all was delicious. Very generous portions and well seasoned, too. Interesting and creative cocktail list was a nice bonus. We've already made a reservation for the night before Thanksgiving for our whole family. So glad they'll be open all winter, too as we live so close.
I've been to The Roost before. I loved it when it was small and had interesting, delicious dishes. Since its moved too its larger venue, I have not found the food to be well paired or very tasty. Perhaps it's me each time I go the waitresses mention a couple of dishes as being outstanding: the Bolognese and data being one of them. If I end up there again, I'll give that a try.
We were with friends in Ogunquit for a few days for our anniversary. I chose Roost for the occasion. The service was excellent. The drinks were fabulous and the food was excellent! Very creative menu. The brie appetizer was outstanding.
Unfortunately I was not very happy with our dining experience at the Roost Cafe. The evening started off all right, but went downhill once we were seated for dinner. I had hope for a romantic evening but it turned out to be anything but. The table we had for two was put in the same room as two other large parties. Our waitress was so busy with the other parties we had to constantly get her attention in order to get anything. We did not get any water or bread until we asked the busboy for some. Then it took forever to place our order. Once we received our food the waitress never came back to check on us until we were almost finished. I had asked for another beer but she forgot it until the very end. She seemed to be over extended with the number of tables she was responsible for. My wife asked for more tea and again it took forever. When it was time to pay the bill I wanted to use my American Express card, but the waitress said we don't take that card. No "I'm sorry or anything"
I also was disappointed that when I made the reservation I put in the notes that it was my wife's 60th birthday and hoped that the restaurant would do something special. Well when we arrived the host said "Oh your here celebrating your anniversary?" I said no my wife's birthday...he said Oh I'm sorry.....and that was it nothing special happened.
I was quite surprised with the evening as Trip Advisor had given the restaurant such high reviews. With the many choices available in the area I for one will not be dining there again.
$28 for sliced pork tenderloin? Pretty steep price for pork, so I was expecting something extra special. I even went on the server's recommendation. It was tasty but not special. I can't even remember what the sides were. Needless to say the meal didn't leave much of an impression on me or my dinner guest.
Roost serves up a nice variety of appetizers and entrees which can be gluten free if requested.
I had the signature roasted pork and beans cuban style...very tender and excellent bite..al dente ..to the small black beans. M had the bolognaise special..a rich pasta sauce with a nice tang to it...The salads were fresh and ample..the goat cheese on my salad was warm and melting into the dressing as i like it. The quiet setting was friendly and diners were not bunched up too close to each other. It was a weeknight so it was a lighter density of diners.
Restaurant choice was easy given The Roost offers many gluten free options. As it turns out almost the entire breakfast and dinner menu is gluten free or can be made gluten free with a small price increase. Most of our selected items were very good with the exception of the gluten free crab cakes which were not very good at all. Overall, the restaurant is a very good choice.
The food we did order was of good quality and portion. Unfotunately the 2 main selections on the menu we chose including the chicken liver pate were not available. We had our mouths anticipating it. The ambiance is upscale casual. The pan seared brie is tasty as is the prosciutto wrapped cheese
This was our first time at their new location. The owners are friends of a friend and we enjoy stopping in when in Ogunquit. On Thursday we started with drinks at the bar, the bar is very unique in design and we enjoyed 2 delicious cocktails. Dinner was superb. Johanna was very attentive and made great suggestions. My husband enjoyed the Cuban pork and I had a feast of lobster tail surrounded by shrimp and topped with a small crab cake. Everything was cooked just right. We shared a coconut flan (all desserts are made on premise) - it was divine. My husband doesn't care for coconut but he really enjoyed this. We enjoyed our evening so much that on the weekend, friends came up to meet us and we went back on Saturday evening. Again, the Roost did not disappoint. Johanna again was very attentive. Asian Chili Salmon was my selection of the evening and it was delicious served atop jasmine rice. Oh - and both nights we shared the Heirloom Tomato salad - to die for!! Can't wait for our next trip to Ogunquit.
