The views are spectacular and the service is second to none!! The food was delicious (I had scallops and my husband had steak) and served promptly...in fact almost too quickly.
I know the goal of the servers is to ensure you are on time for the show but we purposely made our reservations an hour and forty five minutes before the show in order to take our time and linger. Of course we ate at our own leisurely pace but there did seem to be a bit of pressure to quickly finish.
The food was really delicious and the portion sizes were perfect...not too big, not too small.
The only other negative I should note is that it did lack atmosphere. They don’t open for dinner until 5 and most people seem to make their reservations for about that time. So at promptly 5 pm people were lined up waiting to get inside...that made it feel a little less elegant and more like an all you can eat buffet. I was surprised how pushy many of the patrons became when the line started moving!
Overall, the food was great, service was prompt and you can’t beat the bird’s eye views. It was a great experience and I recommend trying it out!
As kennedy members we always have dinner before roughly monthly visits and the mark up above is consostent with our monthly experience.
This is the second time my husband and I have eaten at the Roof Terrace restaurant and we enjoyed it both times. I do wish that they had more vegetarian options and dessert options.
Also, this last time I made my reservations almost a month in advance and asked for a table for four by the windows. We were seated at a table that was by a wooden part of the wall, so we only had a small portion of window view. I was quite disappointed by this.
Also, we ordered white wine and it was not chilled enough. Our server brought us a chiller and that worked well, but we were surprised to have to ask for it.
Our server was knowledgeable and polite. The food was delicious.
As expected from many previous dinners. Excellent service and wines, uninspiring but adequate food.
I was in the city on a business trip for three days and decided to have dinner at the Roof Terrace Restaurant.
Even though it wasn't a busy night at the Kennedy Center, I had a reservation for 6:45 pm. My arrival was smooth and the hostess was very courteous, promptly escorting me to my table. Servers were very respectful and attentive to details: I wasn't there for any events at the Center, and my server did a great job recognizing - and adapting to - my relaxed, slow pace, never trying to rush me. The food was delicious: the romaine hearts Caesar salad was very flavourful, as were the wild mushroom risotto and the chocolate dessert. Portions were perfectly sized and ingredients were all very fresh, carefully prepared, and impeccably presented.
Overall outstanding experience! Would highly recommend to all those planning to come for an event at the John F. Kennedy Center, or just interested in an outstanding dining experience with a special atmosphere. I look forward to going back with my partner.
Enjoyed a very good pre-opera brunch. It is a buffet with a wide variety of selections from breakfast items to prime rib and seafood and lots of delicious vegetables. Unique buffet as you go in the kitchen for buffet service. The view from the top of the Kennedy Center can't be beat. The brunch is pricey but the quality of the food is very good and the price includes unlimited champagne or mimosas. The service is very attentive and you can easily enjoy a relaxing meal an hour before your show.
Had Sunday brunch before a matinee performance at the Kennedy Center Opera House. Excellent value: unlimited oysters on the half shell (until they ran out), steamed mussels, u-peel shrimp, lachs, smoked fish, etc. Delicious, rare prime rib and roasted vegetables, salads; made to order omelets; other brunch items and desserts. Champagne and mimosas included. A good deal if you are at the Kennedy Center for an event.
Husband and I enjoyed our meals. Food came very promptly. Service was fine. Only complaint is that the room is so large and there were very few tables occupied at the time we were there (6:30 pm). There were probably more people earlier, as the opera began at 7:30. (We were not attending a performance after dinner.) It would be nice if they could break up the room with partitions of some sort so you didn't feel as though you were eating in a barn.
What happened to the Roof Terrace Restaurant, a place that used to offer a good meal as a prelude to a Kennedy Center performance? Our recent meal there missed on many fronts — a tuna tartare appetizer that was closer to tuna salad; a veal chop that was way overdone and tough, perhaps cooked ahead of time and then reheated; a side of carrots that was simply several raw carrots; and a decent red Cabernet Sauvignon inexplicably served from white wine glasses. Luckily the National Symphony”s performance of Cage’s “...Other Mary” was magnificent. Let’s hope the Roof Terrace Restaurant only hit a wrong note, and returns to its previous level.
Pleasant, good food, professional service, not memorable.
Essentially every time we go to a performance at the Kennedy Center, we eat at the Roof Terrace Restaurant. The food is good- somewhat pricey. The menu has limited choices, which favors good preparation of all of its offerings. We have always had excellent service.
I have never been disappointed with the food, service of atmosphere the Roof Terrace can provide for an evening of fun.
Great restaurant before any performance at the Kennedy center. A must in dc
Excellent food and service. Wonderful view. Nice comforting but fun atmosphere.
Perfect for pre-theater or post-theater dinner.
Such wonderful service - highly recommend as a fast meal before a performance, or just because!
Great service and the food was good too. Our group had the salmon, lamb chop, veggie gnocchi; as expected for the Kennedy Center, a great wine list. I dont think i would go here outside of a pre-theater dinner though. With that said, the service was top notch and location convenient if you are seeing a show
I love the Kennedy Center Terrace Restaurant.
A bit pricey but worth it because you are in the Kennedy Center and just have to take the elevator down to the theatres or opera house.
The Bar is small but cozy.
The views in the dining room are worth the visit.
The menu is limited but everything we had was delicious. They had a great cauliflower soup. Risotto was cooked perfectly. Generous portion of salmon.
The hours are limited - 5-8 I believe, due to shows mostly beginning at 8. The service is fast so no worrying about missing curtain calls. Very courteous and efficient.
All much better than I expected.
(Choose the Roof Terrace Restaurant and not the Cafe down the hall, because though the food is good there too - same kitchen - it is no less expensive and is lit up like a cafeteria, so much so that you can hardly see out the windows when it is dark.)
The food and service were excellent, especially for a pre-theater meal.
The veal special was quite good. Salmon was ok...I was not asked how I liked it cooked. I would have liked it a bit more medium. Service was fine. Terrific for pre-theater/opera which we did attend. Restaurant looks a bit worn. Could use a cosmetic upgrade. But overall dinner was a good experience. We will go again next time we are in DC and attend an event at the Kennedy Center.
Very good dinner and a show
A bit pricey but paired with a performance is worth it. Excellent food and service. Handicap accessible tables a huge plus for my family.
Good tasting risotto. Pleasant wine and good but rather large dessert. We’ll dine there again.
Nothing special and for that it’s pricey. I am not coming back anytime soon.
We love to eat here before seeing events at Kennedy Center - it makes the evening totally stress-free.
It was an amazing evening. The Salmon and Scallops were phenominal. They also accommodated me with my crutches so that we had a table that I could put them aside
We enjoyed our food and they were able to omit goat cheese for me . Nice to get what you want
our server was very helpful and pleasant
Food, service, drink and presentation were all excellent! I did ask for a table with a view, as we were being led to a 4top near an inner wall. All seating, however, near the beautiful windows, had been reserved for Kennedy Center season ticket holders/members. It would have been much nicer if we had had a rooftop view. It was my 15 yr. old son's first "fancy, dress-up date" with his girlfriend. Three of us were celebrating birthdays. The complimentary chocolate cake was so to die for! Wow. Hats off to the chefs!
Excellent restaurant!!!! My only complaint would be that the wait staff was so efficient and attentive and my order came out so fast that I almost felt rushed. The food was MARVELOUS!!! I would come here to eat even if I didn’t have show tickets!
WE had a very good dinner before a concert (yo-yo Ma and Emmanual Ax which also quite good)
This was an awful lot of money for a buffet where you could not get rare roast beef, hot food, or jam with your biscuits and croisant. One can get much of the same good in the cafe at a lower price with rare roast beef.
Everything was wonderful but the price ($48) was far too high for a brunch.
Very friendly and professional staff. Clean. Food and desserts were very delicious. Beautiful view. Expensive but worth treating yourself from time to time.
Within 20 minutes were served out first two courses. No sooner that our forks went down from our first course, the plat s were whisked away and the second course was served.
It was as though were Ina fast food restaurant.
In no was as theexperience worth the prices.
We sensed our veal chops had been cooked in advance and were placed under heat lamps.
We chose this restaurant as we were going to see a show at The Kennedy Center for my birthday. It is very expensive as one would expect for a restaurant in this location. We had the cheese and charcuterie board, with a selection of three items. It was too much of each item, we would have preferred a selection of 6 things with less of each one. The Ceasar salad was skimpy, with not a lot of dressing. We all enjoyed our entrees. The service was attentive, however the waiter did not bring our second glass of wine until we were half way through with our entrees, which we found surprising and annoying at a restaurant of this caliber.
Our waiter was fantastic - patient and prompt, and put up with 2 single women taking their time! Loved the evening.
Food was outstanding. We will be back!
Perfect for dinner before theatre at Kennedy Center. Food was good. Service good. Great views.
We sat at the table for no less than 15-20min without being approached by any wait staff. We had to flag down any random passing server to get water, bread, to order. The food was ok nothing special. But the amount of the bill would indicate the quality of the food and experience was much higher than it actually was. Not a good value at all. And not a good experience.
A lovely pre-theater dinner for a special night. The food was delicious (I had the steak which was perfect), our waitstaff was very attentive and helpful.
It is expensive but well worth it for a special night out.
