Rojo Mexican Bistro - Rochester Ratings and Reviews
I've been with my family before and we enjoyed it, but this time was a bust.
I was given the wrong dish (but the manager gave me my entree for free). Also, the sides of rice and beans weren't provided with two of our dishes so we had to ask for them. We were excited for dessert, but kit-kat cake was awful. It is a small and dense cake with an outside layer of chocolate. The problem is it was extremely dry and tasted like it had barely been thawed from a freezer. The chile relleno had a thick outside layer of fried egg (egg not listed on the menu), which I did not enjoy. Finally, the salsa tasted like blended paste...nothing unique or exciting.
But the vegetable quesadillas were great!! Because I have had a decent experience prior, I will go one more time and re-consider. Hopefully this was just an off-night.
When we arrived at the restaurant, the hostess had difficulty finding our name (which was our error, not hers), but then had a bit of an attitude about it. The atmosphere, noise level and vibe of the restaurant were good. Our server greeted us within a reasonable length of time, but it took a very long time for our drinks to arrive. We were finally able to order an appetizer and our dinners when our drinks came, but then our dinners came out within 1-2 minutes of our appetizer.
The food itself was very appealing looking - fresh and colorful - but none of it had much flavor. The queso fundido was cheesy but bland, and our dinners were without that spicy, flavorful blend of tastes that you normally expect with Mexican food. Even the side of guacamole that I ordered was bland. How can grilled chicken and steak be flavorless? Two different frozen drinks tasted mostly of ice.
It wasn't bad, but when you drop almost $100 at a Mexican restaurant for 1 appetizer, 3 dinners and 3 drinks total, you expect something a little more memorable.
This was truly an amazing restaurant! Our server was beyond helpful and attentive. The drinks were well poured, tasty, and cold. The salsa here is beyond compare (so much we had to take some home). The prices and entrees were amazing as well. If you're looking for a good night of Mexican I would strongly recommend a trip to Rojo.
We didn't like the girl who suppose to be friendly but she was grumpy. Who we went to first like we have reservations, place was empty that day . This is the fist time we went this location, we always go Birmingham. Please don't read me wrong she was really grumpy😫😄
The food was not good. I had chicken fajitas that had no zip in the flavor. The chicken tasted old, like it had been cooked earlier and warmed up. My husband had enchilada verde, which had no sauce over it. Our server was great though! He did a nice job attending to all.
When we walked in there was no one at the host stand (there also was not a lot of people in the restaurant). We waited a couple minutes and the hostess came over and greeted us and took us to our table. We waited about 5 minutes and she came back and dropped off chips and salsa. Waited another 5 minutes before our server actually came around to take our drink order. Shortly after that another server or busser came and dropped off water. The server took off so fast after taking our drink order we couldn't put in for our appetizer until he came back with our drinks. When he came back we ordered table side guac to start and our meals at the same time. The guy came over and made it, we asked for it medium. It ended up being barely mild but still good. The guac wasn't on our table for more than 2 minutes and our dinners came out. We barely had any of it due to the timing. I finished my drink and my husband was still working on his instead of asking if we needed anything else (I would have happily said yes to another drink) he just told us he would bring the check. He never checked on us after we received our meal. What else was disappointing was the table next to us seemed to have a really good server and we got stuck with the crummy one. Food was decent but the overall experience wasn't good.
We had our first meal as a couple at Rojo and were pleasantly surprised by the wonderful food choice. The service was quick and efficient. We signed up for the rewards program and are looking forward to benefiting from it, especially on Mondays with the BOGO on entrees!
I ordered the fish tacos, which had an excellent cut of Mahi Mahi, but I found the dish otherwise pretty boring. The pico was just diced tomatoes and there wasn't even a hint of cilantro, two essentials for a good fish taco.
The margarita mix is home made and delicious though, and the tequila section is fantastic. Not much selection in the way of beer though.
Met friends for dinner after Christmas and had a great time. Service was perfect! I wish I could remember our server's name; he was very busy on a Wednesday night, and he knew we wanted to catch up with our friends. He was attentive, but not pushy. Wonderful!
Our visit was by far one of the worst we have ever had. The place was packed and unfortunately they did not have enough servers. Apparently they had several servers who were missing. No manager was seen the entire time we were there. The hostess wasn't doing her job when she seated customers. Food was only fair but this was due to the amount of time it took for servers to even bring food to the table. Couldn't get drink refills very easily. They need to make sure they have enough wait staff to accommodate a crowded restaurant.
Good quality food with friendly staff. Very quick food turnaround without feeling rushed. The only thing I didn't care for was that they charged me for spreads and sauces that the waiter just asked if I wanted like it was complementary. Seems like it should have been included with the meal price.
Our waiter was wonderful, wish I had remembered his name. Quick service and very friendly. I wish I would have stuck with the taco salad (which I usually get) but decided to branch out and get the burrito bowl. It wasn't bad, just a little more bland than the salad. The rest of the table loved their food, and the house margaritas were to die for!
Among all of the Rojo locations, this one is especially good service and food. This time was the first time the steak in the Fajitas was very fatty and not edible. The manager gave us partial credit and it seemed reasonable.
The only other problem is that the restaurant does not accept OpenTable reservations all the time. There have been many times we choose another restaurant because OpenTable showed that no seats were available -- but when we walk by the restaurant, it seems empty with many open tables.
Food was good. Service could have been better. When we were seated, they did not ask if it was the right spot for us. We needed a quiet spot and soon the live music started and was no longer quiet.
The server was attentive. However, we were not given our napkins and silverware until we asked for it (after the food was served).
Server was very pushy with getting us to order. It was noticeable by our whole group and rude. The restaurant was busy but there were plenty of open tables. We thought we must have been her last table and she wanted us to leave, but shouldn't she have passed our table onto another server then? Her pony tail was also whipping my friend in the face. Just kind of an odd experience. It doesn't deter me from coming back, but it does bring the "Rojo exprience" down a notch in my book.
We have faithfully tried to give this restaurant another chance. It continues to fail.
When it was Andiamo and Steve Simmon's responsibility it was wonderful and always busy. Staff and food were very good and Pete in the kitchen assured us of great food!
We repeatedly have tried to support this local restaurant. It just continues to fail. The last visit was our LAST VISIT!!! Far to costly for poor service and horrible food. Sad because the place is very nice looking and much money was put in it to open under the new venue! This is a great location and I cannot understand why it just can not get it's act together. Joe Vicari needs to take a closer look at this one.
