We have dined at RSI over the last decade and the current team has made it even more special. We celebrated our anniversary and the ambiance, food and service were just as special. It is hard to find a great restaurant that still promotes an old fashioned " dress up" night where men can wear sport coats or suits and the ladies wear dresses, but RSI maintains a code of excellence that its patrons seem to appreciate, while not being stuffy. I encourage you to go hungry so you can try all 3 courses and savor the excellent preparations at every level.
Mother’s day brunch. The kitchen was overwhelmed. It took nearly 2 hours to get our food. $75 per person. Won’t be back.

Nicely paced three hour dinner for the four of us with excellent food, excellent wine, and a noise level that allowed for conversation. A grown up place in a tranquil neighborhood.
This is an elegant, beautiful, intimate, gracious dining room in a historic house atmosphere with handsomely lit porch, and cozy, romantic wooded bar, plus meeting/wedding rooms. The Jaffre family is to be credited for reviving this classic inn. The old world style, with a superb service dining room, is one of the last places that exist for an un-rushed, spaced out tables, outstanding atmosphere - that is quiet enough to actually converse with your friends, family and guests! We were so happy to rediscover this classic in pretty New Canaan.
So that's what we paid the higher tab for - the ambiance, with mostly small portions and limited menu. (Entrees $28-$42). The cozy little bar will be our next visit soon. The bar is warmly romantic as a richly wooded club or tavern, with low lighting, offering live music several nights. We love the entire place aesthetically. It was ideal for my birthday. The generous amount of staff was well trained, polite and added further to the very special atmosphere.
We found the dining room menu tasty but plain and boring, nothing to excite, no garni or eye appeal. Our 4 person dishes all tasted fine so the chef is an excellent cook, but were totally brown in every course and item - French Onion Soup (expected), brown plain, grilled, sliced octopus served on a paper thin slice of brown potato, roasted brown chicken with brown potatoes, brown branzino pieces hiding the delicious yet also mud-colored escarole below, etc. Thus please support this rare gem, while hoping for a more interesting menu with eye appeal in the future. The deserts @$12 delivered a too paper thin, good but a bit pasty flourless chocolate cake. The almond flour in the apple tart added delicious flavor. A caring owner was present; this Inn has great additional potential!
Staff needs to be better trained. Ordered burger with specific exclusions and it came out exactly the way it was on the menu. Waitress "checked" on us as she hurries by not waiting for the answer to "how is everything"...asked for vinaigrette dressing and plain vinegar comes to table... ..busy night but felt confusion on the floor and maybe in the kitchen. We want very much to like and support the RS - hope this was just an "off night"
Hadn't been here in over 20 years, but read about the new chef and gave it another try. Very, very good. My salmon was excellent and cooked to perfection and the cookies for dessert were regular homemade just out of the oven cookies and not tiny little fancy out of a mold looking things. Wonderful! My friend had a homemade fettucine appetizer that was to die for. We sat in the bar area as it was a slow weeknight, but it was quiet and very nice. The table next to us was having a special chef's tasting menu for their special occasion. It seemed like 5 courses, all looking great. Service was friendly and very accommodating. When the chef came out to serve the other table, he also stopped by to see how we were doing. I would definitely go back in another season as they do try to use local ingredients.
My wife and I went for our anniversary. The staff was helpful and attentive and very nice even when we asked them to take pictures for us. It started with bread and oil and I only mention it because it was really good. Yes bread and oil. My wife had a delicious salad and I had an amazing tagliatelle with truffles. My wife had the branzino (Mediterranean white fish) which was recommended and exceptional. I had a beef filet that had a wonderful crust and fantastic sauce. For dessert we both had the apple tart and it was a great ending to the meal. We’re not big wine people but we had a couple of excellent glasses of wine by the glass. True wine aficionados will appreciate the extensive wine list and they also have a full bar. Overall a great experience! We will be back!
Classic inn, main dining room was nice, quiet, and less crowded than the bar room which was as a bar room should be; lively, chatty noise, people having a great time out. Food was very nice. They decanted the wine which is a really nice touch.
I stopped in just for a casual dinner with family on a Friday evening. Excellent service, food and atmosphere. Very pleased.
Dining the way it should be. A classic New England Inn where you can enjoy and hear your conversation, the service was attentive and personal, then add in crispy duck cooked to perfection as was everything we had. The entire evening was perfection!
The owners are lovely and care to do their very best. The chef is outstanding. We are always delighted with our evening at the Inn-A true gem!

I attended a Stag’s Leap wine cellar dinner with a great group of friends last night. We were served a 4 course pork tasting. The Inn’s Chef Francois Kwaku -Dongo and Chef Adam Trulove explained how each dish was prepared along with Victoria Augustine wine educator from Stag’s Leap.
1st Course - House Made Pork Rillette, Whole Grain Mustard Pickled Cornichons paired with Sauvignon
2nd Course -Herb crusted Pork Tenderloin, Roasted Granny Smith Apples, Braised Fennel paired with “Karia” Chardonnay
3rd Course - Crispy Pork Belly, Crushed Turnips and Stewed Cherries paired with ‘Hands of time blend’
4th Course - Grilled Pork Chop, smoked Gouda Grits , Braised Mustard Greens Cabernet Jus paired with ‘Artemis’ Cabernet Sauvignon
5th course was Dark Chocolate Brownie with Candied Bacon Crumble
Very generous portions, great service in a warm cozy atmosphere. I cant wait to do another event . I am definitely reserving a spot for the Yonkers Brewing Company Craft Beer dinner on March 29th. Fun experience, delicious food !! We even booked a room which was really nice. We stayed in the carriage house in a newly renovated room. It was pretty and the beds were very comfortable. Always fun at the Roger Sherman Inn !
I thought the food was pricey and not that tasty. The restaurant smelled musty. I would not recommend.
The service was impeccable. Wait staff was attentive and knowledgeable. The food was delicious and portions were appropriate. Chef stopped by our table and ended up making a recommendation that my husband really enjoyed. This is a classic restaurant and our first time there despite the fact that we live in the area. We'd go back for sure.
Definitely have the salmon appetizer, served on a crispy potato pancake instead of toast - marvelous! Entrée was delicious, but the sides were a bit on the skimpy side. Go on a quiet weekday (not Friday) and the service will be outstanding. The bus boy at our table was the best I'd ever seen - closely watching the table to clear a dish when you were finished, but not so quickly you felt being rushed. It is in an inn, with a wrap around porch for savoring drinks in a summer's breeze.
Those familiar with L'Escale in Greenwich will find themselves completely at home with this menu since the chef current chef at Roger Sherman helmed the kitchen at L'Escale for many years. He has a deft hand with fish (every element of teh cold season platter was outstanding), simply grilled meats and dishes that allow him to explore the spice pallet of his youth. If you are a local regular you will enjoy the hospitable welcome and likely excuse the amateurish service. However, as a first time guest, when one pays top Manhattan prices for what would charitably be described as a below average country club experience its hard to give a restaurant positive marks for the overall value. Maybe on a quieter night (we went Valentines Day) the more seasoned staff dominate and deliver a total experience that matches the potential of the kitchen.
We arrived a bit late, still we were welcomed. As it was valentines day the place was a bit crowded. Our server Paul met with us immediately offered water and the sumptuous wine list.
We opted for the chilled seafood appetizer. My longtime love choose the duck and I had an amazing veal chop. Perfectly cooked, rare interior with a wonderfully crusted outside.

So glad the Inn is here—such a special place! As my wife and I were enjoying our meal I realized we could easily hear each other by just talking normally. You almost have to shout at most restaurants.

This restaurant has been a family favorite of my parents and now I am carrying on the tradition. Its's the quintessenial place for a special date night. New England charm at is very best!
Overall an excellent dining experience. Food was well prepared and flavorful. Staff was attentive and friendly. While it was not a jacket-required restaurant, anyone not in a jacket probably felt a bit underdressed. I imagine business casual works at lunch but the dinner crowd was much more dressed up. Just a heads up since we were expecting business casual.
had not been back to Roger Sherman Inn since they closed and then re-openned.....was a great dining experience and we had a nice table by fireplace. In addition to menu, there were specials. Really wonderful place. The staff is exceptional, attentive, happy. The food is outstanding. My husband and I had our wedding here in October and they exceeded our expectations. How unique to find a place that has music which (1) starts early and (2) isn't loud.....but yet it's current and not boring.
New Chef, worth experiencing. Some of the classics remain on the menu so good if you want (now hard to find) French staples but if not there are some interesting new dishes as well. Rack of lamb was excellent and judging by our neighbors dish of lamb shank we may have not even had the best lamb dish in the house! We were all very pleasantly surprised. The service was absolutely 5 stars.
We have enjoyed dinning at the Roger Sherman on Christmas many times and this year was no exception. Would have preferred seating in the main dinning room but the fireplace area was an added touch that was nice. The owners and staff are always warm and friendly. The new Chef has chosen an excellent Menu both for Christmas and for other times. We look forward to dinning there again when we are back in New Canaan.
It was Christmas Eve and we were offered a table right in front of the bar where patrons stand.
I asked for a different table and was shown to a small table in front of the kitchen. It was a table for two that they added two chairs to to make it for four. Our bottles of peligrino and Wine didn’t even fit. We had to depend on staff to pour. We were sitting in the kitchen traffic at a timy table for prix fix $95 each. Plus we ordered two bottles of expensive wine. True, it’s a busy night but they should make sure that each table has adequate ambience. It shouldn’t be about how many they can possibly fit in!
The food and ambience were great, but the Roger Sherman needs to have more than one waiter in the dining room at lunchtime. Poor guy had too many patrons to attend to all by himself and we had to wait long minutes between courses and for coffee.
Service was very disappointing. No one was present at reception. We had to go a find a waiter to get seated. Even with few customers present, there was an extremely long wait to order. We had to ask for bread. Waitstaff was confused over what dishes to put on table. We had made a point of going to the restaurant to support this neighborhood establishment which had recently been ressusicitated after a proposed sale. Unfortunately, the experience was a disappointment.
The food was very delicious, but I'm only giving it three stars, because they were out of every entree my husband ordered. He had to look at a menu and place his dinner order three times! I know it was a busy Friday night, but the kitchen should anticipate the crowd.
The restaurant should have offered some sort of compensation for the inconvenience. They could have sent out a complementary desert at the very least.
The food was very good. I ordered the Dover sole menuarie and loved it. The fish was perfectly cooked, and the brown butter sauce had a salty and well balanced flavor.
I also enjoyed the atmosphere. The inn is tastefully decorated for the holidays. We sat in the cozy bar area and were treated to live music. Very enjoyable dinner experience, despite the menu limitations.

The service was terrible. The food was mediocre at best. I SO want them to be successful! I have a reservation for Christmas Eve and and am wondering if I should cancel😱😥 They had a huge private party tonite ... maybe they should have added staff .

The new chef Francois Kwaku-Dongo has completely transformed the menu at the heretofore fading Roger Sherman Inn. From the amuse bouche to the our vegetarian and not entrees, everything was wonderful. I would go back in a heartbeat. A gift to New Canaan.
