Roger Sherman Inn Ratings and Reviews
A special birthday night celebration for Kathy with Chris and avanthi
Turned out to be a superb dinner
The escargot were excellent
The halibut dinner special was best I've had
It was accompanied by risotto and Brussel sprouts absolutely cooked to perfection
Kathy had the drivel sole was excellent
Chris had the filet which was. Poked right and really good
Avanthi had the Brussel sprouts and cauliflower which was excellent
All in all great night
We were pleased to see Chef Francois Dongo at the helm of the Roger Sherman after having enjoyed many great meals at L'Escale and other venues. Although our dishes were solid and well prepared, our number one complaint was the amount of food for the price. My halibut (a special for the evening) was smaller than the size of my fist, and accompanying brussell sprouts amounted to about a tablespoon or two. On the plus side, a pumpkin soup amuse bouche was excellent, as was the venison special. An apple tart was lukewarm in temperature and just ok, and I think the dessert list in general needs a bit of an upgrade to match Chef's talents. The same goes for the wines by the glass and cocktail list, all of which seemed out of season, unaligned with the menu, and uninspiring (How about some craft cocktails?). We hope Chef and team are simply working out the kinks in what could potentially be a five-star dining experience. If so, we'll be back!
Rushed service for a quiet night. Bland filet mignon and bland duck. Definitely not representative of the expensive price point. When you're paying $40 or more for an entree, it should be exceptional. Dessert tasted like it was prepared days earlier and pulled from the refrigerator just before arriving at the table.
Being new to the area we are trying to sample all the local food options. Dinner at the Roger Sherman Inn was an all round enjoyable experience. The appetizer salads were good but could have used a bit more flavor but the entrees were both very good and prepared to our liking. My only negative comment, they try very hard to be an upscale venue with a nice interior and patrons that dress to go out to eat but I think the service staff is a bit juvenile and not polished enough for the atmosphere. The staff was nice but in this price point, I expect the service to be better and I don't expect to hear the manager (I don't think it was the owners since they seated us) bossing around the staff. If they were trained correctly they would not need to be directed to do everything....or he should direct them outside of the patrons ear range.
Very disappointed, my husband's prime NY steak tough, fatty, couldn't eat half. Overpriced, and something that we never saw before order same drinks , one straight up other on rocks, straight up $2 more! We went several times years ago with old owners was our favorite, now won't go back.
Excellent! For the second year in a row we ate at Roger Sherman Inn for our anniversary.
Our table was on the patio and the experience was perfect. Food was creative and the service was very good. We look forward to our next dining experience. Support local!
We were celebrating my wife's birthday and hadn't been back to the Roger Sherman Inn in many years, so we decided what could be nicer than going to a country inn in the Connecticut countryside. Our expectations were high, and they were met on every count. The brunch was buffet style, with a package price that was very fair. Unlimited, help-yourself/make-your-own Bloody Mary's or Mimosa's with vodka or sparkling white wine. Unlimited oysters, plump shrimp, smoked salmon and white fish, all with a choices of seafood sauces. Pate, with Dijon mustard and cornichons. We were already so full that we skipped most of the routine brunch offerings (bacon, sausage, eggs, French Toast, vegetables, potatoes, omelettes) and went straight for dessert where we chose Bananas Foster in crepes with whipped cream.
Afterwards, a walk outside amidst flowers, shrubs, and trees in Spring blossom. We'll be back soon.
We went to the resturant for my wife birthday as we view it as one of the gems in the area. The menu continues to be one of our favorites. The good was excellent and the staff took very good care of us. We were surprised that the waiters seem to have totally changed. That said the new staff were attentive. We certainly will go back there again.
For $85 a plate, fixed menu, the food was slightly above average. The deserts were good, but I received 2 small lamb chops, my son's fillet was well done and everything seemed mass produced. I understand it was Mother's Day but I have been at weddings where catering seemed more special, especially for $85 a person. I wish I had gone to NYC fir that price.
the overall experience was excellent. the mothers day menu was a touch overpriced at $85.00 per person, and the service staff was quite young and inexperienced for this level of dining. overall we enjoyed ourselves, the staff is very friendly and the food is outstanding.
The Roger Sherman Inn is simply a treasure in the heart of beautiful New Canaan, CT. We were just there for my birthday dinner. 8 people enjoying the fabulous service, wine, cocktails and took in this wonderful, charming, warm historic treasure. The kicker, though the place was full, we could actually . . . HEAR each other!!!! We all are now determined to remember that though this is a perfect spot for special occasions we would all remember to go there for ANY occasion. Lunch, dinner, cocktails - just because!!!
The salient features of the Roger Sherman Inn have always been its combination of excellent food coupled with excellent service all set in a beautiful classic New England inn. My wife and I have been to the Roger Sherman Inn many times since 1987 and in all cases have left very satisfied. It has never been inexpensive, but the price was never an issue because we always knew that we would have a delightful time. Last Saturday night was a disappointing exception. The food was, as usual, excellent. The service, however, which has always been a hallmark of the Roger Sherman was, at best mediocre. Once our order was taken, we were ignored. We had to ask for more water, we had to request more wine. Our original waiter disappeared and we had to call on the bus staff and in one case, the host. In both cases, it took time for these basic items to be delivered. We all know that the Roger Sherman will soon close. We had hoped that it would go down with a classy bang, not with a whimper.
Excellent service, white tablecloths, not rushed, perfect Vodka Gimlet, delicious trout, fun music, great crowd. We spent 2 1/2 hrs in conversation, having a very enjoyable evening. Other restaurants rush you in and out--they want your drink order before you have even looked at the menu. Roger Sherman is sophisticated in its approach, leading us to three weeks in a row of dining there and strongly suggesting to friends they book a table.
Special place for a special date, wait staff was very accommodating and menu matched the winter environment. The wood paneled bar area/dining room is the highlight and recommend grabbing a table there if noise is not a consideration. Perfect place for anniversaries and mother's day.
All in all good experience, we were disappointed because took a ride from upper part of state ( we own a restaurant) it was my birthday, so just wanted a more fine dining experience! We were surprised it was only Brunch, which food and drinks were good , and price value great , ambience nice , wait staff courteous , just want more full service menu and waiting since was my birthday! But that's okay!
We had the pleasure of celebrating our son's "big" birthday, on a snowy Saturday evening, in this wonderful historic restaurant and while we thoroughly enjoyed everything about our experience, it is continues to be bittersweet knowing that it will soon no longer exist. So sad. Here's to keeping this charming establishment open for many more years!
