Excellent food, ambiance and service. Highly recommended
Service was prompt and attentive. Food was just average.
We had Sunday brunch at the Roger Sherman Inn. It was a beautiful day and we sat outside on the large covered porch - really lovely setting. The food was excellent and the service friendly and attentive. We could not have been more pleased.
Wonderful meal and very attentive service. A New Canaan treasure.
Did not realize you could sit on the terrace. I arrived early & was able to get the perfect table outside on a beautiful evening. The staff were very attentive & did not rush us. The food was very good with many choices. Overall a perfect night.
Still a great place after these many years. A New Canaan landmark. Excellent food, ambience, service.
Awesome Sunday brunch on the patio. Excellent food and service. Really a great spot to enjoy a Sunday w friends.
We had a nice dinner on the porch just at dusk with fireflies around us. While service was a little slow, the food was very good and much improved from several months ago. The bar is also very cozy with live music on weekend nights.
Mediocre dinner. Same for service
The food was prepared and served beautifully and the staff was very attentive. Sitting on the porch was an added bonus, but there are 2 doors from the restaurant to the porch that were being used continuously and one door slammed constantly. We had to request that door not be used and that finally happened making the rest of our meal more enjoyable. We were delighted to find another outstanding restaurant.
We have been staying at the Roger Sherman Inn a couple of times a year for the last several years, but (for various reasons) had never eaten in the restaurant until this visit.
We didn't know what we were missing.
The menu was extraordinary. I'd go back every day for a week just to eat the vegetable terrine.
The service was excellent.
Note: the menu on the OpenTable website is not the menu at the Inn ...Menu at the Inn is MUCH better.
The Inn is gorgeous, everything on the menu is delicious and the Hosts are elegant & welcoming! Many Thanks Ness❤️
The service was awful. They were so preoccupied with private events that they couldn’t remember to take a drink order, bring enough menus for the table, or offer a wine list. For such arrogance as you walk in, the experience was less than desirable.
The food and service (as usual) was very good. We were disappointed to be seated in the bar area, because a private party booked the entire dining room. Had we been told that in advance, we would have changed our reservation to a different date.
New chef is wonderful! They brought back the Souffle for dessert, and it was excellent!
Lovely atmosphere and yummy food. It was a beautiful day so sitting outside was wonderful.
Outstanding restaurant. They do a beautiful job in every area..
Food is generally good but the pricing is far in excess of what one would be pleased to pay for food that is unfortunately not outstanding. I think they charge as if it were a special occasion, gourmet restaurant but neither the food nor service match up with the pricing. They would get more frequent repeat business if they had a less stuffy and more varied menu and were somewhat less expensive. The atmosphere is wonderful but it is all downhill from there.
They have remodeled since we were there last. It used to have a wonderful old New England inn quality, paneled walls gilt framed paintings, very nice. Now once in the dining room you could be in any typical hotel wedding venue. No art on the walls actually removed a wall so it’s one big empty space, room dividers pushed up against a wall that used to have paintings hanging. The table settings and seating is still very nice and the dining room is nice and quiet. The service was very good and the servers were quite personable. The food unfortunately was average. Over cooked fish, at the price inexcusable. The other dishes were good but not exceptional. The bar area is still original decor. If we return we might give the bar a try. For the price there are better options. It’s unfortunate, I wish them luck as an event venue, it is a wonderful part of old New England.
As always, a wonderful brunch!
Love this restaurant!!
The food was amazing. The service was attentive. It was a bit not icy on a night where it t wasn’t extremely busy.
Short version: I would not recommend the Roger Sherman Inn as they seem to charge a premium yet don't have the basic understanding of food service.
Long Version: Was there for the Mother's Day lunch with my wife and toddler son. Quite frankly, it was one of the worst dining experiences I have had to date. One example of the many instances of terrible service: 30 mins after asking the waitstaff for a drink for my wife (including a reminder), it finally came out - to the wrong table. After the table examined the drink and took a sip as they had no idea what it was, the waiter came back and took the drink from them, gave it to my wife, and said "dont worry, they didnt touch it". I quickly corrected said waiter and a new drink came out... about 15 mins later. All told it took an hour to get a soda water with a splash of cranberry. You can imagine what it was like trying to get the food.
Understandably, it was mother's day lunch which comes with it's challenges and large parties. As a customer, you need to relax and be a little patient as well. However, Roger Sherman Inn is a venue that specializes in large parties and events. You would expect there to be a level of competency that comes along I have to say I did not see any of it.
I would not recommend the Roger Sherman Inn as they seem to charge a premium yet don't have the basic understanding of food service. I don't know if there is a way to message on open table, but if there are people considering this location and would like to reach out and ask me more specific examples, feel free to do so.
A set menu at $75 excluding drinks.
Food was all pre cooked, even the pasta (yes pasta at a $75 prix fixe!!). I had to return both my dish and my daughter ($35 prix fixe menu for Kids, yes $35 for chicken nuggets and Sunday) because the food was cold. Service was the worst part. I had to beg for the menu card, employees were seen in clients’ bathrooms, they charged $7 for half bottle of San Peligrino and the waiter kept on poring tap water over it. Staff was running all the time, bumping into each other’s and the back of the client chairs.
DO NOT GO. Both food and service are forgettable
It was a memorable occasion--everyone was friendly and attentive, and the food was delicious. Will go there again
We went on a Thursday night, when a large group had taken over most of the restaurant. Our table was in a confined bar area and the food was limited to a small bistro menu. What we ordered was good but we had come expecting the extensive menu listed on the OpenTable website. We have been eating at this historic restaurant since 1978 so the changes management has made to survive in a highly competitive restaurant business came as a shock. We were disappointed. If we had wanted a bistro meal, we probably would have gone elsewhere. I would advise a friend to go only on weekends and to call the restaurant beforehand to find out if there are any big group dinners planned.
We went to Roger Sherman Inn for Easter brunch last year and had a top notch experience. Tjis year was disappointing. We were seated immediately and then waited about 15 - 20 minutes before a server came to take our drink order. In fact, we were served bread before drinks. After our server found us service improved, but the food quality was mixed. Our appetizers were good - a seafood trio for my daughter and me and a blueberry, kale and quinoa salad for my husband. My husband and daughter enjoyerd theie entrees: cocoa crusted filet and halibut, respectively. I got very over-cooked and dry leg of lamb, which was partially saved by a delicious rosemary jus. My daughter got a delicious duo of chocolate cake for dessert. My husband got creme brulee - good, but stone cold. I got something advertised as an apple tart tartin that was really disappointing - cold and soggy. We are likely to try some different options for Easter brunch next year.
Musician over-miked. One dish was very salty but they were kind enough to replace. My husband and my meal was delicious.
The Roger Sherman Inn is elegant and beautiful. The ambiance is perfect for a quiet romantic dinner. The food is good, particularly the specials. We enjoyed the tuna tartar and escargot for appetizers. The salmon is always delicious as well as their steak frites. Excellent service.
Very disappointed in the menu, Few choices and nothing like the Roger Sherman I remember. Kind of surprised it was more of an pasta menu than fine dining! Very disappointed.
We always recommend RSI to friends. George is the best waiter! Initially, we were disappointed to hear the chef left but the new one exceeded our expectations!!! We will be back soon and look forward to the new menu!
I would not recommend going on a Sunday evening. I have dined there many times with excellent service and excellent food. It was clear that the regular chef or wait staff was not there on Sunday.
Beautiful venue with excellent food and service. The remodeling was stunning. The service outstanding and the brunch food delicious. All in our party of four were pleased.
Great food and service and live music!
Excellent food. Second time here. Will be back.
Always a delightful meal at the Roger Sherman Inn. Have returned for many occasions and the staff and the food is excellent!!
We had not been back since the restaurant “closed” 2 years ago. It has been a family staple for years prior. We decided to return on Valentines Day. Holiday dining is always a challenge, so keep expectations in check. In all we had a nice evening. Drinks were good. Unfortunately, they had forgotten to serve the amuse bouche soup, and when it arrived after we mentioned the error - it was cold. Other than that, dinner (duck and filet) and dessert were both cooked properly and delicious. We will return to try again on a regular evening.
Excellent local favorite that never disappoints. Will certainly be back soon.
Very expensive for what it was. Service was rushed.
Our children gave us a gift certificate for this restaurant so we decided to try it out. the menu is very simple, casual. I ordered the octopus appetizer and it was delicious with a lot of flavor and perfectly seasoned. My husband ordered a duck appetizer and he loved it too. We both ordered the crab cakes and they were very well made, they had no bread crumbs at all and they were very tasty, served with a salad and the dressing was very light and delicious as well. For dessert we had the profiteroles and they were made there, great pastry and very delicate ice cream. We were seated by the bar area which is a very nice, warm, elegant room and I recommend you request to be seated there because the other dining room is very bright and cold in my opinion. Our server was very attentive and so was the rest of the staff. I heard they have a great brunch so we are thinking of going for that the next time we visit.
Very nice decor, outstanding brunch. Good choice for a special occasion.
