Rod's Steak and Seafood Grille Ratings and Reviews
Outstanding! We were celebrating our 25th anniversary and were greeted upon arrival. The food was perfect and then we were surprised with an anniversary cake. Sean the manager also gave us a personal tour of the train cars. Great experience! Will definitely go back.
I have been there before and this place is one of my favorite restaurant to go to. The ambience is beautiful. I had the escargot for the appetizer and my oh my-delectable. then for my entree I had ordered their aged petite filet mignon and the portion is just perfect for me... it was tender and moist. I would go back there again but this time, I want to try the train dining area. I would recommend this place to my friend.
We were taking friends out for a birthday dinner, and our service and 2 of our dishes were not good. We ordered a cocktail at the beginning of our meal, and wanted to order wine with dinner. We were still finishing our appetizers and our meals were coming out without being offered the wine list and were still working on our salads. Our meals went back to the kitchen, while we ordered our wine, 25 minutes later, after obviously sitting under a heat lamp our meals were brought back. My swordfish was dry and just warm in the middle and my husbands steak over cooked. Not what you would expect for a $360 meal.
Rod's is a great place to eat. I found it by accident a few years ago, and make it a point to visit each time that I am in the area.
I have never had a bad or even a "that was OK" meal there. Every time the feeling was OH MY, that was AWESOME!! The steaks, the appetizers, the sides, etc.... all are fantastic.
I took a group of six people here for a special occasion last weekend. I live in NC now and was in NJ visiting old friends. I grew up going to Rod's and it was my father's favorite restaurant. We were seated in the train car and overall our experience was good. I was very excited to take one friend from NC to Rod's who was in our group... to show her my hometown. Her meal could not have been worse. She ordered a steak medium and it was absolutely raw in the middle. We had to send it back twice to get it right and we were all finished with dinner by the time she got hers. The management made no adjustment to my $400 bill and overall we went away disappointed. There is no excuse for a steak house like Rod's to mess up on how a steak is cooked. Otherwise, we had a nice evening but we were so disappointed that it was not the perfect evening we anticipated.
I made reservations for 3 for my aunt's birthday. We were seated right away at a cozy banquette style booth. We were given a bread basket with walnut bread, baguette, and crackers while we looked at the menu. This is a steak house so all steaks are served without side dishes and those are a la carte in portions for more than 1 person. Despite several large groups (two tables that each had 16 people), our food was delivered in a timely manner, and the service was good. I had mentioned that it was my aunt's birthday. The server brought us a little cake with candles for dessert (I'm not sure if I was charged for this because I forgot to check the bill at the time). Everything was lovely. It was a special dinner for a special occasion. The check for 3 was just over $160 before tip, so this is definitely more of a special occasion place in my opinion. There is a pub there that I haven't tried yet, but I would probably try that next time.
Rod's is, and has been a family favorite for generations. It's dependable for great steak and the service is always good too. Our last visit was no exception, many in the party had their favorite crab bisque. I went with some oysters and clams. Everything was delicious and I also got a bonus clam. ;-) Dinners were three petit filet and I had the lamb rack. Once again, everything was cooked to perfection. Some mushrooms, crispy shallot mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus completed the entree. Again, all delicious. Louis did a great job of making sure all of our needs were met. Desserts were varied from pear spice cake, creme brulee, cheesecake and berries with zabaglione. Again, everyone loved their choice, and Rod's once again proved while it's worth the drive from Summit to get a great meal that's a better value than Roots'.
We celebrated our son's birthday with a family brunch. Besides being delicious, the vast variety of dishes offered catered to all our family members. My son is vegetarian and my grandson is only 18 months old and we all enjoyed the meals and desserts. My grandson joyfully listen to the pianist play. Great place.
The food and portions is what would bring us back. The overall service was not good. Our party of 8 was disappointed in the lack of personal attention and simple happiness given to us by our server. When making the reservation for 8 on 12/28/17, I even asked for a fun, happy server because we are a fun group. We absolutely did not receive that. When we entered, we were ignored by the
1st set of female workers that were seating individuals in the front bar area. We had never been to Rods before so, we had to figure on our own where to go check in our reservation for the main dining room.
Overall, food good ~ service poor, unenthusiastic & unappreciative.
Steak was ordered medium and came well done. Sent back politely and then came out totally rare. Third time was ok but rest of meal was over. Waiter took it off the check but was not a great experience for a steakhouse. Enjoyed drinks and apps at the bar before dinner.
Rod's was an excellent venue for our get together. The seating lived up to its billing and the food and service was great. Great menu options. The ambiance and historical setting inside the train car offered a special element to the gathering. Enjoyed it thoroughly
Service was poor, food was OK my lobster was dry, will never go back. We ordered for 2children from the adult menu to split a steak even though they have a kids menu and they charged a plate sharing charge?! We had several other nice experiences there with children, superb service and were never charged a plate split fee— it wasn’t the $5 just the point of it!! We will never go again for a dinner there are so many better options for the price....
Rod's is a long standing New Jersey tradition. It stands with some of the greatest steakhouses in NYC and elsewhere around the US. As a bit of a conisour of grand steak houses, I say Rod's is New Jersey's Berns, and for anyone who has been to Berns in Tampa Florida you will understand how special Rod's is. Rod Geller's vision from 80 years ago still stands strong with the excellent services, amazing ambiance, and the understanding that neither of those matter without outstanding food. Get the onion strings no matter what you do and sit in the train car if you can.
