Rod N Reel Ratings and Reviews
We celebrated my husband's 78th birthday at the Rod N Reel on Dec 6. We had such a good time and the restaurant looked wonderful! I loved the poinsettia tree and all the holiday decorations!! The food was good and the service was excellent by Kelsey. I have celebrated my 50th and 61st birthdays here. Just a very good restaurant and always a good time!!!
The food was plentiful and the quality was good. Lots of options to meet everyone’s taste. The Santa was great and the picture was a nice touch. However, our service was awful. We sat for more than 20 minutes before we were ever greeted by our server and then it was a quick one at that. No description of the buffet or drink specials. We asked about the drink specials for the brunch and she was annoyed to have to tell us. We ordered a mimosa and a Bloody Mary. The Bloody Mary tasted like watered down cocktail sauce. She did not clear our plates, but once.
The tables were crammed in the room with hardly room to move between them. When we were ready to pay we had to wait another 10 min. for our waitress to come back.
We had a wonderful Thanksgiving Dinner at Rod and Reel. There were many food options for a family with so many tastes. Everyone was pleased with the meal. The old folks had traditional Thanksgiving meal of carved turkey, mashed potatoes (white and sweet), green veggies, stuffing, cranberry sauce, dessert and coffee. The young people explored all of the offerings. I think all six of us had a different dessert and wow, what a value. We had fun and everyone left happy!
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!! My family and I dined for Thanksgiving. The buffet looked very appealing and the smells that were being let off by the food attracted us even more. Once we got our food, that was another story. The corn pudding basically ran off of my plate and was not cooked thoroughly. The green bean casserole was mushy, the cod wasn't even identifiable as it was chopped into pieces and we constantly had to wait for food to be cooked since none of the staff was watching the pans that needed to be refilled. Our server Dave was nice but had way too many tables as he kept forgetting our drinks and scratching his head to remember. We waited twenty minutes for our check so that we could pay and be on our way. I thank God that I am a good citizen because the way that I was feeling, I should have just left without paying. $238.00 for what???? I voiced my concerns to the manager on duty and he gave us coupons for free bowls of soup on our next visit. I left them on the table because we will not be returning.
We booked thru open table and added the “special remarks” that it was my husband’s birthday. They had a nice table reserved for us. I’ve been there several times before and been very pleased with everything. This time, however, Service was slow, one wrong wine was brought, had to ask twice to bring bread, then had to ask for butter, then had to say husbands birthday (she didn’t charge for his dessert after I told her). So she fixed everything but didn’t even say “happy birthday.” Afterward a different table with a birthday got singing and candle/ cake. (I know this all sounds petty). We will return, I just think the special comment I made through open table should have been passed through to the restaurant and sufficient, and also think that the waitress needed more training? Food was very good as usual, and live music was great!
This has to be one of the worst restaurants I have ever been to. My flounder which I ordered fried was chewy and tasted terrible. My macaroni and cheese side was cold and when I requested it to be heated up I was given a new one which did taste ok but I was told " this is a new batch you had the end of the last batch". The prices were very high for poor quality food. I would have preferred fast food over the food I received here. My husband ordered the "recommended" crab stuffed rock fish which wasn't bad but was small and the side dish of spinach tasted like the chef dumped an entire container of salt in it. We noticed the table across from us didn't eat the spinach either. I wouldn't recommend eating at this restaurant it is not 4 star quality.
Our waiter Michael (not spelled this way) served us well. While we were there on a beautiful evening there was a brilliant rainbow over the bay. It was very special. My husband did not enjoy his seafood platter very well. We are a frequent visitor to this restaurant and the seafood platter is usually better. The fish was not very good this time. The oyster Rockefeller was delicious. I had Lobster tail and it was great and a good size. All in all a great evening.
A fantastic overall experience. Took my girlfriend out for our anniversary dinner and service was wonderful. Was given a table overlooking the Bay just liked I asked for on the reservation. Food was delicious and the ambiance was very quaint. Live music entertainment. Also given an option for a free dessert. Certainly higher priced but so so worth it.
My husband and I stayed at the Chesapeake Beach Resort and Spa so naturally, we went to the Rod N Reel for dinner (the restaurant is part of the resort). We looked over the menu prior to our arrival and were quite excited to have a fine dining experience for our first anniversary as a married couple-- the menu boasts fresh seafood and steaks for higher prices so we definitely thought we were going to be impressed. We were SO wrong. I ordered the Mariner's Platter which had "crab balls, shrimp, scallops, flounder, and oysters"-- everything was fried (horribly) and tasted like what you would get from a fast food seafood joint. My husband got the Crab Imperial which was salty and disgusting. We did not dare order dessert because it was surely some type of frozen/thawed cake of some sort. The food was just a DISASTER. But what was even worse was the service. The hosts had no idea what they were talking about (one gave us a breakfast menu and told us we could have it delivered to our room the next morning-- when we called no one answered the phone. Instead we went down to see that there was a breakfast buffet ((that should have been free)) for $16 per person- I could write a whole second review for this). Our server for dinner was named Shelby. She was obviously upset, and maybe she was having a bad night-- but her attitude was HORRIBLE. She was not personable at all, did not bring us any bread or ask how things were the entire meal. She was rushing us to leave (not that we wanted to stay) but as soon as we walked out the door we saw her jump into a car that peeled off in the parking lot in front of us. All in all the experience was terrible. The food was worse than any diner I've ever eaten at and the service was just as bad. I would suggest that if you are staying at the resort to venture out for food!
Made reservations online for 4, ended up with 5 people. They were quickly accommodating when we arrived- Good start....but went down hill after that!
Took the waiter 10 minutes to take our drink order, and he never asked if we would like any appetizers. When he brought the drinks 10 minutes later, WE had inquired about appetizers which we ordered -came out 20 minutes later. That's when he took our dinner order ( you do the math ...40 minutes later!!!) We arrived 7:45pm and dinner wasn't served until 9:00pm!!! 3 adults and 2 kids...When dinner was finally served, my nephew (8yrs) had to wait an additional 10 minutes for his mac & cheese meal. How hard is Mac & Cheese? We all had our meals except him...Really? 1 adult sent her fish dinner back as it did not smell or taste right and they forgot the added on crab cake for another dinner
When I approached the manager about waiting so long for our dinner, he very unpleasantly and curtly informed us that it was very busy, with No apology or empathy what so ever.
Not at all interested in dining at this restaurant ever again!
The entrance to the restaurant was not clearly marked (to us at least) and we ended up in a very crowded, noisy not very pleasant game room upstairs. When I asked someone how to get to the restaurant, I was told to go through the tavern which also was not so good. It wasn't until we were leaving that we saw the main doors opposite the hotel entrance. The view is outstanding and the food was very good. Our server was attentive though not terribly outgoing. We were treated to dessert on the house since it was our 49th wedding anniversary. We came back because we had been here many years ago when we were dating so it was a nostalgic trip.
Worst dining experience in my life and ruined our famil birthday celebration for my wife. We waited over an hour for our food and when it came it was only Luke warm except for my step sons chicken that was burnt. The mananger tried to make things right but it was too little too late. Pity but ther are plenty other area restaurants where you can get better prepared food, better service at a better price. No second chances for this place
Nice location looking out at the marina, and we were able to watch a band performing on the outdoors stage that night. We went fishing that day, and the restaurant offers a fantastic option to cook your fresh catch for you - it was delicious! Other food was good, too, and the nightly special was a very reasonable price (regular menu items a bit pricey).
Some confusion whether we could use a coupon at the outside tables - so we dined inside. The staff were very nice about it but communication lacking. Service was not as good as usual - refills on drinks very slow, food brought out at different times. Bread on sandwich was partially burned. Not our normal nice experience! Sarah, the hostess, was terrific as always !
We have never been to Chesapeake Beach area before and thought it would be a fun experience. The area is nice the restaurant/hotel /spa is also nice. The service was poor it literally took 15 minutes to get a drink. OK, there was a concert on the plaza and we excepted the poor bar service at that time due to the circumstances. Then we ordered appetizers and entrees. When the food came it was our entries and no appetizers, the server (not ours) who delivered the food was very nice and said they would take the appetizers off our order. So we ate our entrees. The food was only ok, My order came with beer battered onion rings (2) which were the best par t of my meal. Unfortunately, there were several sewer flies flying around the table which, made for an unpleasant conversation and lots of hand swatting... Our server did come by once while we both still had plates full of food to ask if we would like to see a dessert menu??? I think our expectations of this Hotel/Spa / Resturant were higher than average because of the location and the ambiance. I would not recommend this location for a private or nice night out. This is definitely a destination for couples - groups with low expectations. Last note - I asked the server when she asked if we wanted dessert if she knew about the appetizers and she also said she would make sure they're not on the bill. Once the bill came there on the ticket was our drinks, entrees and our appetizers... really disappointed in the service, even though the food was not great the service really tarnished the whole evening... price was one drink each and toe entries $88.00 - I eat in DC and Annapolis a lot! This was way too much to spend for the service we received and over all experience...
Honestly, the restaurant was clean, service was friendly and kids enjoyed their crayons and silly string. Nice touch on those. However, the food was absolutely awful. The bread was stale, fish was greasy, Mac and cheese was powder-y, chips were tasteless, fish tacos were sweet (not even sure how that is possible), even the ranch tasted weird (like it had mayo in it). We really wanted to like it because it is pretty out there, and people were friendly. But again ALL of the food was a disaster. One bad dish maybe go back, but how you mess everything up is beyond repair.
If you're there on a Saturday evening, there is always a wedding going on which can be fun to watch the ceremony or the wedding party running around. However, this can cause the service to be a little slow or for them to run out of glasses. Our waitress was super nice and willing to split our party's bill into 7 different checks! She did seem a little overworked though, and would sometimes not attend to our table for 15-20 minutes at a time. Overall, if you're not in a hurry and like a lovely view of the Chesapeake Bay, this is a good place to go!
Enjoyed revisiting a childhood favorite--but was floored by the sprawling facility, and sad to hear that the Rod 'n Reel will soon disappear. Glad we had reservations on a hot Sunday night in July. Fun to watch people dancing to live music, fishing boats coming in, and my beloved Bay. Food was overpriced for quality, though. Servers and hostesses all friendly and polite.
First time at Sunday Brunch (have been to Saturday brunch a few times). Had heard years ago, that Sunday brunch also offered seafood. I guess that's changed. Overall, a decent brunch for the price. Food was good. Omelet line long, but I know it's worth the wait. Peach Bellini's were awesome. Loved our server, Patti. Will definitely return!
