Roast - A Michael Symon Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
My Husband has Parkinsons and is not able to get out very often.
He was having a good day on sunday and I wanted to take him somewhere
that I was sure we could get a wonderful meal. WE have eaten at Roast in the past and were
pleased with the experiance. While the service was superior and the ambiance was very nice,
The food was mediocre at best. The king crab appetizer didn't even taste like there was any crab in it,just creamed corn. The food went downhill from there!
Will not be back
The food was good. (That's the good news). However, I will say that the menu seemed a bit limited.
I had not been to Roast for several years. I think it is time that they invested a bit in the décor and perhaps some team member training. The seats in the main dining room were crushed. If you can find one that does not have a depressed center, you would be one of the lucky ones. The overall appearance of the dining room (and unfortunately the staff) was worn and disheveled. I do not think there is a clear or consistent dress code.
Competition for the high end dining dollar is getting better in Detroit. If you want a fine dining experience, you are best to check out any of the new places.
Food is excellent! Make sure to get the brussel sprouts with your steak. Only thing I didn't like is I ordered a Jeffersons old fashion. If you dont specify which type, bartender gives you the top shelf option of Jeffersons without asking. So my one cocktail ended up costing $21! That was a complete rip off! Parking costs you $12 after a restaurant disc. which is also kind of BS if your only there for 1.5 hours or so.
Thank you for a wonderful meal, and especially for Ken. He was awesome. I can’t say enough about our experience. The food was fantastic, the atmosphere was cozy, and our waiter Ken could not have been any kinder, or more accommodating. We were seeing a show after dinner, & he made sure we were done in time. He worked so hard that night, for ALL of his tables, and I don’t know how he stayed so pleasant! My husband’s 50th Birthday went great. He now has a new favorite restaurant. : )
When we arrived, we were warmly greeted by the hostess at the door, they made us feel very welcome. Although there were 2 in our party, we requested and were seated at a table next to the window that would accommodate 4. Our server, Brandon was simply outstanding. He was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu, and he took time to answer our questions. He also kept checking on us to be sure everything was to our liking. We ordered the crab appetizer, we each had a filet and we had the whipped potatoes and the brussels sprouts. Appetizer was delicious, perhaps a little too salty for me, but my husband had no complaints. The filets and the bearnaise were delicious, and the brussels sprouts were superb. The potatoes were good.....could have had more flavor. We did order dessert, a lemon cake with lemon ice cream as well as an order of the salted caramel ice cream. Both of these items were so, so yummy, could not have been any better!
Only one negative was the parking. We had the Westin valet our car, and they simply would not return it. We waited and waited and waited, for over 25 minutes. This happened to 2 couples waiting in front of us also. Valet was NOT busy at all........they kept saying they would get our cars, but did not. We were late to the performance at the MOT, for which we had tickets. Would definitely come back to eat at Roast, but would park elsewhere.
We can't wait to go back to this restaurant, we would highly recommend it!
We dined at Roast for our Anniversary. The Food was and Service was a 10 out of 10 - It is what you would expect from a Restaurant of this caliber.
Regarding the Ambiance: For us the lighting was dialed a little too low for our preference. It was difficult to read the menu at first until our eyes adjusted.
The following has nothing to do directly with the restaurant, and is only pertinent If using Valet parking for the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel. When dropping your Vehicle off in front of the Hotel (in the evening) it can be very busy and they only have a couple spaces to park, so you may have to wait in line on Washington Blvd. You will be given a valet claim ticket. When leaving the Restaurant be sure to have your valet ticket validated at the greeting desk (where the coat check is located) This will save you $8 (reduces the parking from $20 to $12) - This was fine, however after paying for the valet fee, we had to wait 20-25 minutes for our car, but that was the only down side.
Overall, a wonderful dining experience. I ordered the tuna filet and my wife ordered the pork chop (we did trade only because she wanted a smaller portion than the chop). Our meals were absolutely wonderful. You might want to consider making the brussel sprout side a bit smaller. it was A LOT of brussel sprouts. Our server was wonderful! The only reason I marked "Overall Experience" very good and not outstanding was because, of all things, my chair. The cushion was so broken down, I was basically sitting on the wooden frame. I know I could have switched chairs but I don't like making a fuss, especially in a fine dining establishment. Anyway, it might be time for a remodeling or at the very least, upgrading of the furniture.
I'm hoping this was a one time thing, but for the money we paid, I was very disappointed in my meal. First I ordered the bone marrow appetizer. There was no marrow in them. Just oil, salt and herbs. 3 out of 4 of us ordered the filet mignon. It was cooked well and was tender but none of us could eat it because it was overwhelmingly salty. I did say something to the manager when he came by. He didn't offer to have our steaks recooked. I believe there was a free dessert. So, I probably will not be returning.
Sorry, for a high end steak restaurant, I'd rather go to a well known high end chain, as sad as that may seem. My wife and I asked for a split new york (I believe), and it turned out to be a bone in steak and I got the thin somewhat anemic portion (medium at best), and she got the thick portion (medium rare as requested). We divvied that up, but the presentation was lame. They should never have permitted that, or if they did, warned us, or failing that, sliced it so it was balanced. We would've ordered something else frankly if I'd realized. And, we asked for it charred. One side was charred, and the face down portion was barely grilled. Ugh. I don't recall the sides as being anything special to make up for that. Basically, I'd take a pass. I don't like leaving a review like this, especially since I'm a huge fan of Westins and Starwoods, but it was so disappointing... Stick to the happy hour here.
The restaurant is beautiful and the service was excellent. The steaks were superb. Wine list and cocktail choices wonderful. Only hesitation - the a la cart prices. When I pay upwards of $50 for a hunk of meat, I like to at least get a small salad or some kind of potato or vegetable for the money. Left the restaurant enjoying the experience but feeling a little bit ripped off.
