Roast - A Michael Symon Restaurant
I ordered the sea scallops with mac n cheese and brussels sprouts as sides. The brussels sprouts were tasty. The mac n cheese left a lot to be desired. It was basic at best. The scallops came out at room temperature. The waitress took them back to have them reheated (not fresh new ones but ok). When they were brought back after about 7 minutes they were cold. No heat had touched them. So apparently my food just sat there. They were taken back again and were finally hot when brought back to me (another 5-7 minutes). By that time, however, my experience was ruined because the other items had gotten cold. I asked for the check and left. The scallops were removed from my tab. There are tons of great restaurants in Detroit. Roast isn’t one of them. This was not my first time there but definitely my last.
This was our second time at this restaurant, ane it was just as amazing as we remembered. Every aspect of the meal was superb. The drinks, appetizers, entrees and desserts were some of the best we've had in our vast experience in dining.
We will be coming back and eating here, and I almost find myself excited for that day.
We had a dinner for two on Saturday night. We were seated promptly even though we arrived a bit early. The booth that we were seated in was right next to the bar. In my opinion that spot should not even be offered as a seating option: the constant traffic to and from the bar, noise from getting the ice and waiters chatting was not conducive for a relaxing atmosphere. To add to that one person whose job was hard to guess who was wearing a suit, and who was standing by the bar with his back to our booth all that time was wearing intoxicatingly strong cologne and most of the time I was hoping that he would walk away. On the other hand, our waiter, I believe his name was Greg, was excellent. He provided good advice, was attentive and pleasant. I was conflicted about the food. Duck confit was absolutely amazing. It was a perfect combination of flavors and texture. If there is a dish that I would come back for it would be duck confit. Ribeye huge size did not compensate for lack of flavor- it was cooked correctly but flavor was not quite right, I have had better. It was not bad I just expected better. Brussels sprouts side was too oily which took away from the vegetable in my opinion, would not order again if I were to come back. The booth was also very dark I had to turn flashlight on to see my food. Overall I have mixed feelings about my experience, maybe I just had bad luck with seating but that doesn’t not explain a bit of disappointment with steak and Brussel sprouts.
Lots of hype, little reward. I’ve had meals I’ll remember forever, for a third of the price.
We had an amazing dining experience. Food and wine were excellent. Waiter was very knowledgeable and made great recommendations. He was attentive without being intrusive. He asked us if we were celebrating anything and we told him we were celebrating both our birthdays. After dinner he brought out small ice cream cones with candles. Nice touch! Cannot wait to go back.
Excellent food and service, just somewhat pricey.
wonderful private quiet space to dine in -excellent professional waiter -food was amazing
As someone with a number of food allergies, I opt to dine in majority of the time. Roast's Staff were prepared with my allergy listed printed & reviewed. I was able to have a fantastic dinner without fear of cross contamination or reaction! Thanks for a wonderful evening!
I've seen a noticeable decline in the quality of food from my previous visits to this restaurant.
Lovely dinner. Although everything was great - my husband and I thought the Cesar Salad was one of the best we ever had!
Very noise in middle they move us to back by wine case very nice
Phenomenal food and service. Would definitely recommend!!
Service was great. Food was good a bit on the salty side. All dishes even the salad were salty. Kitchen did a terrific job accommodating the 2 vegetarians that attended. Staff was great in reading the reservation notes and acknowledging a birthday when we arrived as well as when we left with a small treat. Only giving 4 stars because of the saltiness of the food and the darkness of the restaurant. We saw numerous tables using cell phones to read the menu. Would recommend and will be back to enjoy again
Our server, Kevin, was delightful and professional. The staff that supported him by refilling drinks and clearing dishes were exceptional. Drinks were very good. While the beef cheek pierogies were indeed good, I've had far better pierogis. The head chef should take a short trip to Amadeus in Ann Arbor to learn how to improve the authenticity and overall flavor of his pierogis. We also shared a salad, which was good, but nothing spectacular. The brussel sprouts and macaroni and cheese sides were also adequate. I applaud the chef for not doing what most other places do by adding an ungodly amount of sugar, but it could perhaps use slightly more balsamic and slightly less charring. The lamb shank was divinely cooked, prepared and presented. The filet was also slightly over-charred. It was a very high quality piece of protein, but the thickness of the char was just a bit too overpowering. Perhaps some casino butter could have enriched and broken that up. We were also delighted to see that the restaurant and our server celebrated our anniversary, noted in OpenTable with a hand-made and decorated chocolate disc to accompany our dessert. The atmosphere was wonderful as well, with a relaxed ambiance and lighting to match.
Didn't really get refills on the non-alcoholic beverages unless we asked. Terrible selection of desserts. Food was good but we can definitely get something closer to home at a better value with the same expectation of food.
We and another couple both brought our kids. Ours 7months and theirs 2years old. The staff was gracious and accommodating. At no point do we feel out of place. Which is always a possibility when you attempt to introduce children into a fine dining atmosphere. We enjoyed our drinks, happy hour apps, entrees and sides. Our waiter Greg was patient and helpful. Great experience.
The food was great! The only thing that needs to be addressed is the dinning chairs, need to be more cushioned please.
I have many food restrictions and they were very helpful with making sure i didn’t have anything that would trigger my allergies. My food was delicious. Kevin was our server and he was very kind and knowledgeable and very conscientious about making sure my food didn’t stray from what i could safely have. We will be back!
From the second I walked in until the second I left the experience was amazing. The food was by far the best i have ever had!
Detroit is getting more and more good and interesting restaurants but Roast is a level above them all. I have chosen to have a BIG birthday here.
While the open table reservation noted we were celebrating a birthday, the server never mentioned it or asked if we were celebrating anything. When we were seated, the chair was broken. The server was slow to replace it. The most disappointing element was the RW menu. They literally charged $39 for less than a cup of the pasta dish. No excuses for that! The French onion soup was undercooked. Only the dessert was acceptable in size and taste. To add insult to injury, we paid $12 to wait 15min for our valet vehicle to arrive. Would not come here again.
The food was excellent, but the service was slow.
A perfect meal! The server was fabulous, the food delicious. An amazing night.
We all had a great dining experience during DRW I will return ASAP
Excellent overall experience. First time there and will definitely be back.
The waiter Kevin treated us like we didn't matter as much. We have been here before and this time visited during restaurant week and the food was disappointing.
Usually excellent, I unfortunately had a steak under cooked and I being me will never send something back to the kitchen so my only compliant. Everything else was very good as always.
One of the best, yet simply prepared, filet steaks that I have ever eaten. Service friendly and knowledgeable. Ambiance a little juxtaposed compared to pricing as we were in the bar area despite reservations days before and fine dining area was near empty upon arrival at 5:00. Overall, would highly recommend if your goal is unequivocally a great steak dinner.
The waitress was very attentive but not knowledgeable about the menu. The meal itself was served luke warm, not good for steaks, the side dishes were the best part of the meal but were cold and had to be sent back for reheating. Very expensive meal, not worth the money
Some of the portions seemed off and $50 for a bottle of wine I buy for $12 seems excessive. The setting is very nice and our server did a nice job. Overall a nice night. We have been patrons on occasion for a few years and had overlooked you recently. Restaurant Week put us back in the door. Thank you for participating.
Like their food, but no much choices for vegetarian
Great food and service
For it being restaurant week we expected to be wowed and were very disappointed. Service was great but food was adequate. Nothing we would go back for.
Our second visit to Roast. First time going to Roast for Detroit Restaurant Week. You won't find a friendlier, more professional group than the workers at Roast. We started with drinks in the bar. Happy Hour wine $5 per glass! We had requested one of the private booths behind the bar. It's much quieter than any of their other seating options. Our appetizers and desserts were spectacular (beef heart salad, raw salmon, mango sorbet and The Bar). Our entrees were fine but not special (Hanger steak and Wild Boar ricotta cavetelli). We were surprised that the entree portions were so small. We were expecting a 10oz hanger steak but it was not even half that size. We also ordered two sides: crispy potatoes and walnut brussel sprouts. The potatoes were lukewarm and the brussel sprouts were tasty but too much vinegar. Overall, a good experience but we were happy to being paying Restaurant Week prices rather than their usual menu prices.
Brussel sprouts were a huge hit. The bar for dessert was so worth breaking any diet for. We tried the French onion soup, beef heart carpaccio, hanger steak with chimichurri sauce, seared Cod with leeks and butter sauce and the meatballs. Loved all of it. I have never used any condiments or seasonings here. Food is amazing
Always a great place to go
Would be a wonderful date location. Very romantic and food was delicious.
Excellent Wild Boar Ragu and Beef Heart Carpaccio. Waiters/bussers kept trying to take away our food before we were done and had to yell for them when we wanted service. 3.5/5
Michelle provided excellent service to our party of 4 during Detroit Restaurant Week. The chick pea salad was delicious, cod exquisite and The Bar...marvelous. I had not visited Roast in more than 7 years. Time to add it to our rotation.
