About RL Restaurant
A warm, rich interior, RL Restaurant houses an art collection that reflects and represents a lifestyle vision of quality, integrity and timelessness - the design and cultural aesthetic of Polo Ralph Lauren. The food is not based on how exotic the chef can appear with his creativity, but on how finely tuned and balanced are his compositions -- renditions of ideas that have a history on the American Table. ****Please note that reservations are for dining room only. Bar and Patio are first come first serve.******

RL Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
RL is not what it used to be. Decent at best. They took the ribeye off the menu & the ambiance was different than it was a few years ago. The dress code was not upheld & pretty loud. What used to be a luxurious restaurant is now a a casual dining. The pricing & value was not on par with the original dining experience. Really disappointed.
Every facet of the lunch was wonderful. The service was attentive and friendly without being overbearing or intrusive. The food was exceptionally delicious and well presented. The ambience was wonderful, buzzing even though we had a nice and quiet corner. RL is an easy and very reliable classic, and it is always a pleasure to visit.
I have dined in both the bar and the dining room. Love both places...but the bars atmosphere was Exceptionally fun and friendly ! Our waiter was also the bartender who was absolutely excellent. I wondered how he did both so effortlessly. Our food, as always, was cooked to perfection and delicious!
We had a thoroughly delightful evening and dinner. Everyone in our party loved their choice of appetizer and entre and most were different.
The room is noisy but we still could visit quite well.
Wish we could have had an earlier reservation but our fault for not calling earlier. A week out is not enough!
We had great hopes for this place, but were disappointed. Table was OK, but the half booth was not comfortable. Two small tables placed together had large pedestals, not much room for legs. Appetizers are limited. Had calamari and shrimp, calamari was good but the shrimp were not de-veined. Tasted the squash soup. Waiter was adamant I would love it and did not take it well when I ordered the clam chowder. Think liquid pumpkin pie filling. Way too much cinnamon and nutmeg. Chowder was pretty poor for the caliber of restaurant. Entrees were red snapper and dover sole. The snapper came buried in halved cherry tomatoes and could not be seen until you scraped them away. It was OK but not the greatest. The interesting part of the meal was the dover sole. Waiter showed me a beautiful whole fish and then took the fish halfway across the dining room and did the tableside preparation of my dish a good 20 feet away in a narrow walkway next to the waiters station with guest being walked to tables just inches away. I was in fear of hair and debris from coats. Waiters were reaching over my plate getting napkins and other things from the station. We had a lot of room next to our table. It could certainly have been done tableside...but at a minimum how about back in the kitchen?! The dover was good but the lemon/butter sauce was watery and tasteless so, basically, I was just eating a broiled fish. We barely saw our waiter. He was very impressed with himself and the RL restaurant in general. Less concerned about our experience. As the meal continued we were helped more by a different fellow who was assisting. Our waiter had moved on to better things I guess. This restaurant is in a nice, but small, room. They think a LOT of themselves but the food and service do not live up to expectations. There are a great many finer restaurants in the same area. We have eaten at most of them over the years. Not going back to RL.
The best cozy, classy, Chicago Gem. We first went here back in 2000 shortly after it opened. We had a vodka martini with blue cheese stuffed olives that was awesome. Fast forward 17 years and YES, they still serve it. Great NE Chowder and real Lake Superior Pike for dinner. Waiter very informative. And a trip to the bathroom down the elevator, truly old Chicago. We highly recommend!
We have been to RLs many times over the past 20+ years. A treat whenever we are visiting Chicago. Service always top notch and love the clubby atmosphere. Excellent wine list and bar service. Menu has been significantly pared down since we were last here a few months ago. Preferred the more expanded offerings. This was first time the kitchen staff did not know what the dish lobster the old way was so couldn't order it (sad). But did get nice veal Milanese, breaded and fried flattened veal chop with arugula salad on top. Very good. My guest loved the snapper entree. We'll be back and hopefully different kitchen crew on that day.
You wouldn't expect anything less from something Ralph. The decor was amazing (how could it not be?!), the service was great, the menu was perfect, the food was amazing. The mignon sauce for the oysters was the best I have ever had. Vibrant is how I would describe the ambiance. A real restaurant. We LOVED it.
this was our 2nd time at RL for lunch. we have been seated outside before and this time we enjoyed the indoors. almost like being at two totally different restaurants. the lobster roll was great - my husband loved the burger.
can't go wrong inside or outside.
We had a wonderful meal this past week, including two different main courses and one appetizer. Oh particular note was the incredible service provided by Nicole Teoh.. She was friendly, knowledgeable and thorough in ever aspect of her service. I would recommend the restaurant for it food and absence, but also for the wonderful service by Nicole Teoh.
Dinner could not have gotten off to a worse start. We arrived on time at 9 PM. The two young hostesses could not have been ruder. Forget an apology for not having a table ready, one said, "go over to the bar to wait." (Not 'would you like to wait at the bar?)" It is a small bar and there was no room or seating. There were two open, not set up bar tables next to the entrance, so we sat there. A waiter started setting it, and then one of the girls ordered us to go to the bar. When I pointed out that there was nowhere to wait there, she said, "there are two ladies who have been waiting for this table - we won't give it to you. Get up." I thought it was an open bar table, and had no thought of dining there. I told them that they were being downright rude. They said nothing, no apology, nothing. I have been to many restaurants of all types, and have never been treated so rudely - ever. At this point Abdel Afkir, Assisstant General Manager, saw there was a problem and tried to help. He was very nice, had us sit at a table the two ladies were now leaving, and we ordered drinks. He then arranged for a nice table in the main dining area, and later comped us the bar drinks. But it was a remarkably unpleasant way to begin a dinner at what is supposed to be a fine dining restaurant that is also rather expensive - meat dishes about $50, wines start at $70, so the whole meal was over $300. You deserve a little common courtesy at such a place. The sadder part is that the food was actually quite good. The lobster bisque was reasonably good - not enough lobster and flavor a bit bland (could have used some sherry). The veal chop was very well prepared, and the key lime pie was outstandingly good. So it could have been a perfect evening were it not for the two girls and their 'greeting.' And they did not seem to even understand what they had done. I don't say this often, but they should be fired. People make mistakes, but they did not care or apologize.
I have dined at RL restaurant several times, and I tend to take out of town visitors there. Last couple of times I dined there I was made to wait around a half hour or more beyond my reservation time to be seated. The last time was particularly unpleasant. No one offered to take our coats and we were seated at the worst table in the house by the kitchen entrance. I had to hang my coat on my chair where waiters going back and forth kept running into it and knocking it to the floor. The servers are nice and the food is very good, but one of the receptionists had a somewhat indifferent and arrogant attitude. At the prices they charge at RL, one would expect better treatment. I might still go to their bar to eat a burger once in a while, but I won’t be taking guests to dine there any more.
