About RL Restaurant
A warm, rich interior, RL Restaurant houses an art collection that reflects and represents a lifestyle vision of quality, integrity and timelessness - the design and cultural aesthetic of Polo Ralph Lauren. The food is not based on how exotic the chef can appear with his creativity, but on how finely tuned and balanced are his compositions -- renditions of ideas that have a history on the American Table. ****Please note that reservations are for dining room only. RL Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
RL Restaurant came highly recommended by a local friend for my recent visit to Chicago. I didn't realize it was such a hot spot until I went to book reservations 3 weeks out. I was only able to get a lunch reservation on the days I was in town. It worked out perfectly since it gave us a much needed break from shopping on Michigan Avenue. The food was delicious and the staff was outstanding. Since it was our first visit to the restaurant, I didn't realize there was a coat check room. Our waiter offered to take our coats and check them for us. It was a truly wonderful dining experience, even for lunch, and will definitely dine their on my next trip to Chicago.
We have had better dining experiences in this restaurant on previous visits.
The food, crab cakes, a reuben sandwich and an omelette were good but
nothing special. The service was a bit lacking. I had to track down my waiter to get the iced tea that I had ordered. My biggest criticism was that the restaurant was so crowded that
the wait staff and other customers banged into the back of chair at least 20 times. This was
very annoying and interruptive.
Very very disappointed. We were rushed through our dinner. As soon as we finished our salad, they placed our main course in front of us. Then immediately gave us the dessert menu.
After 2 minutes, waiter wanted our dessert selection. Very embarrassing for a “high end” restaurant. We had friends from Australia and I can’t imagine what they thought.
Also, they should address the restroom issue. Taking a small elevator to a creepy lower level is uncomfortable. Take part of the Ralph Lauren store and make a respectable restroom.
Started our girls weekend at RL with lunch. We were greeted immediately and asked if we would like our bags, coats and umbrellas checked. After being seated, the wait staff took care of our every need and offered suggestions to my daughter with an avocado allergy. Our meals were both beautiful and delicious. Can’t wait to return!
There were way too many tables shoved in the restaurant. We were a party of 5 and we could hardly hear each. Waiters crawling all around us because they had no space to move and serve. It was chaotic. The restaurant was full and not a desirable place to be. The food was great.
As usual, RL was the perfect dining experience from the moment we stepped thru the door. The cozy and classic ambiance, the veteran waiters with world class service, the divine dining, and excellent wine list and cocktails.
RL is our trusted go-to for special dates and long dinners, each and every time it always impresses, and we leave wanting more.
My wife and I had an 8:30 reservation and we arrived a bit early. The lounge and bar were packed but we luckily got seats at the small bar while we waited. The hosts and bartender were very accommodating and it was a very good Moscow Mule. We were seated at about 8:40. Our original table in the main dining room was very tight/not private and the room was loud. The host re-seated us in the lounge by a window which by that time was private, quiet and perfect. We had a delicious dinner with good service.
So happy to have had an extra evening in Chicago after a business meeting and to get the chance to enjoy RL. Seriously one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in a long time. The wait staff was terrific. The actual wait past the reservation time was under 10 minutes for a very popular restaurant. The food was fantastic ! Jaffar steered me safely to a memorable gluten free dinner. The professionalism is very evident in all of the Restaurant. They do genuinely care about your satisfaction. I will be back as soon as I can !
RL is not what it used to be. Decent at best. They took the ribeye off the menu & the ambiance was different than it was a few years ago. The dress code was not upheld & pretty loud. What used to be a luxurious restaurant is now a a casual dining. The pricing & value was not on par with the original dining experience. Really disappointed.
Every facet of the lunch was wonderful. The service was attentive and friendly without being overbearing or intrusive. The food was exceptionally delicious and well presented. The ambience was wonderful, buzzing even though we had a nice and quiet corner. RL is an easy and very reliable classic, and it is always a pleasure to visit.
I have dined in both the bar and the dining room. Love both places...but the bars atmosphere was Exceptionally fun and friendly ! Our waiter was also the bartender who was absolutely excellent. I wondered how he did both so effortlessly. Our food, as always, was cooked to perfection and delicious!
We had a thoroughly delightful evening and dinner. Everyone in our party loved their choice of appetizer and entre and most were different.
The room is noisy but we still could visit quite well.
Wish we could have had an earlier reservation but our fault for not calling earlier. A week out is not enough!
We had great hopes for this place, but were disappointed. Table was OK, but the half booth was not comfortable. Two small tables placed together had large pedestals, not much room for legs. Appetizers are limited. Had calamari and shrimp, calamari was good but the shrimp were not de-veined. Tasted the squash soup. Waiter was adamant I would love it and did not take it well when I ordered the clam chowder. Think liquid pumpkin pie filling. Way too much cinnamon and nutmeg. Chowder was pretty poor for the caliber of restaurant. Entrees were red snapper and dover sole. The snapper came buried in halved cherry tomatoes and could not be seen until you scraped them away. It was OK but not the greatest. The interesting part of the meal was the dover sole. Waiter showed me a beautiful whole fish and then took the fish halfway across the dining room and did the tableside preparation of my dish a good 20 feet away in a narrow walkway next to the waiters station with guest being walked to tables just inches away. I was in fear of hair and debris from coats. Waiters were reaching over my plate getting napkins and other things from the station. We had a lot of room next to our table. It could certainly have been done tableside...but at a minimum how about back in the kitchen?! The dover was good but the lemon/butter sauce was watery and tasteless so, basically, I was just eating a broiled fish. We barely saw our waiter. He was very impressed with himself and the RL restaurant in general. Less concerned about our experience. As the meal continued we were helped more by a different fellow who was assisting. Our waiter had moved on to better things I guess. This restaurant is in a nice, but small, room. They think a LOT of themselves but the food and service do not live up to expectations. There are a great many finer restaurants in the same area. We have eaten at most of them over the years. Not going back to RL.
The best cozy, classy, Chicago Gem. We first went here back in 2000 shortly after it opened. We had a vodka martini with blue cheese stuffed olives that was awesome. Fast forward 17 years and YES, they still serve it. Great NE Chowder and real Lake Superior Pike for dinner. Waiter very informative. And a trip to the bathroom down the elevator, truly old Chicago. We highly recommend!
We have been to RLs many times over the past 20+ years. A treat whenever we are visiting Chicago. Service always top notch and love the clubby atmosphere. Excellent wine list and bar service. Menu has been significantly pared down since we were last here a few months ago. Preferred the more expanded offerings. This was first time the kitchen staff did not know what the dish lobster the old way was so couldn't order it (sad). But did get nice veal Milanese, breaded and fried flattened veal chop with arugula salad on top. Very good. My guest loved the snapper entree. We'll be back and hopefully different kitchen crew on that day.
