Riverwalk Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Last night's meal was very disappointing. Six of us attended and three of us ordered the seafood special. Poorly prepared dry fish, undercooked shrimp and a lobster tail that was a miniscule and too well done. Not worth the prices we paid and not typical of past experience.
On a very chilly night, after walking down from our local bed-and-breakfast, we were given a very cozy table. The oyster special was absolutely delicious, covered with cheese and toasty warm. Cocktails were well crafted and inventive. Even though we are in seafood territory, we chose to rebel and go with the elk chops and the duck, and both dishes were absolutely delicious. We are foie gras junkies, and the chef did this one absolutely perfectly. Visiting from LA, we were not sure what to expect in this sleepy town, but we were really, really impressed.
I made a reservation to mark the final night of a family vacation. Here are the highlights of the evening: we were seated on time and their warm bread was amazing. Unfortunately everything else left us wanting. Our server was forever telling us she would be right with us - it took almost 15 minutes to even get a children’s menu. But the worst offense was the main course. Of six entrees ordered, only two were correct! My sister-in-law and husband both ordered the special of shrimp and crab with roasted tomatoes over penne only to receive three shrimp, the most meager serving of crab and no tomatoes. My brother in law ordered the chicken caprese - the crispy mozzarella topping was delivered to the table when he was halfway done - with no apology! But the worse offense was my own dinner. I ordered the pork tenderloin and instead was brought the beef tenderloin. The waitress told me it had to be right as there was only one tenderloin - when I was obviously looking at beef. By the time they tried to bring me the corrected order everyone else at my table was done eating and I refused the meal. The manager offered no apology and made it sound like I was being unreasonable - hardly the professional response I would expect from a restaurant at this price point. The upshot - I paid almost $200 for a meal riddled with mistakes, shoddy service and a lack of even the smallest of managerial expertise. I would certainly not recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to be assured that their special occasion will not be ruined by carelessness.
We came for Thanksgiving Dinner (having never had Thanksgiving in a restaurant before). We were very happy with the surroundings, the food, cocktails, etc. Was very nice and the managed a large crowd well. We had to wait 45 minutes for our reserved table, but given that Holiday that can be understood. 45 minutes was a little long, but honestly I expected to wait 15-30 minutes on such a busy day!
River Walk is outstanding! We went to their thanksgiving buffet. They had over 800 reservations, but they were right on schedule. We arrived early, and they offered complimentary champagne while we waited. They directed us to their sister restaurant next door (Water Street Grill - also excellent) until our reservation time. We were seated right on time. The ambiance was excellent, with a roaring fireplace and river view. The restaurant was full, but not noisy or chaotic. The food was superb. The buffet had all of the expected thanksgiving foods plus local delicacies such as raw oysters, steamed mussels, crab imperial, shrrimp, southern greens, etc. The carved prime rib was melt-in-your-mouth perfect. The desserts were made in-house and were great. The price for all of this was an amazing $38 per person. They also had an extensive wine list.
Our server Audrey was excellent. She was friendly, professional, and attentive without being intrusive. We never felt rushed, even though it was the end of her shift and we were her last table. Audrey set the standard for what a great server should be.
This was our first experience with River Walk, and it won't be our last. My wife and I decided that River Walk will be our go-to restaurant for special occasions when we move to the area.
We highly recommend River Walk restaurant.
We have dined at Riverwalk since 2005 and usually find it an excellent experience.
The cuisine is of a very high level but could improve in its vegan/vegetarian offerings -- some creative flair is needed here to offer more than a vegetarian pasta or salad selections.
We would visit this restaurant more often if they had a better vegetarian selection, although the chef is usually willing to provide a la carte items by our request.
The ambiance is excellent, although it can become a bit noisy if you have larger groups dining;
a corner table can help if you require a quieter place for conversation. Online reservations are quick and easy to make, and the site also advises how many others have booked on a particular day or evening.
While the staff are usually well-trained, they could use a little more refinement in their service.
For example, serving tea on a wet saucer, or failing to bring a specific item requested, or interrupting guests mid-sentence, without saying excuse me -- are some areas that might improve.
One of our guests ordered a rare hamburger; when the plate arrived, the hamburger was medium-rare. We waited until the waitress had returned, not wishing to interrupt her at other tables, due to guest volume. We then advised that the hamburger was not rare. The waitress responded, "Do you want to recook that?" She should have immediately apologized (as it was either her mistake or the chef's mistake) and promptly removed the plate, advising that another plate with the correctly cooked meal would be brought out quickly. She then said, "Do you want to separate the salad on your plate and keep that?"
The situation could have been handled in a more professional manner. The manager did return later and apologize, but the waitress could be trained to respond in the correct manner.
By the time the second plate arrived, our friend had lost her appetite and did not complete her meal.
It was an average evening, but not the best at Riverwalk.
We had the pleasure of having Sunday Buffet Brunch. It was outstanding.
Food was fresh and plentiful. Oysters Rockefeller, Crab dip, variety of pastries, fruit in a waffle cone, beef tips potatoes pasta salad etc. And not only that you can order a variety of egg dishes which includes benedict and pancakes.
Service was outstanding and the views are very nice. Comfortable seating. All around just great.
Will go again.
nice location, nice waitress. salads were good (panzanella) to quite good (kale caesar), entrees were disappointing or moderately good.
Fish and chips: cod okay, good but no more notable than that, one medium filet. Wrong potatoes totally for something resembling chips. These were just orange and oddly shaped mashed potatoes. One has to wonder if this chef has ever been to Great Britain. Advise he visit Manchester or Edinburgh before he attempts this dish again. There are variants there but even the fast-food level ones in these cities far surpass this mess and show and taste why its a popular basic dish.
Scallops with mushroom risotto, pork belly and rainbow carrots: fine scallops, risotto was built with the pork belly made it extremely rich, very nice sauted wild mushrooms on top. Forgot to garnish with the carrots, too bad, resulted in a reduction on this entre -least they could do.
Online, amateur reviews touted fresh cobbler dessert. They could not be from people who have actually had good homemade cobbler - was too sweet and out of balance, fruit to pastry.
Still can't fault the staff. They were pleasant, helpful, despite the circumstances.
Had to change reservation from a party of 8 to a party of 12 fairly late in the game. The restaurant was very accommodating and welcoming. The server did an excellent job and the food was very good. This was a first time visit for most of the party, which included people from Mathews to Virginia Beach. All were very pleased.
Almost like it was under new management. Cocktail was made incorrectly. Gin and tonic without tonic. Service was almost non existant even though restaurant had only four tables occupied. Food was beautifully presented but badly prepared. No sauce with one course, fish badly cooked. Almost unlike previous visits which were perfect in all areas. No bread served on table even though other diners had bread.
What was good -- soups !!
Our waitress Jennifer was outstanding!!! I can not say enough about her. She was very attentive to our needs without prompting. Great personality which put us to ease. Food was perfectly cooked which is hard to do with seafood. Next time we are in town, we will be stopping at Riverwalk Restaurant.
Overall the location is ideal. We sat outside on the deck to take advantage of the view and weather. Our server was good. We were disappointed by the taste or lack thereof of the food. The presentation was great but it lacked the taste you expect for the price paid. I felt I could easily create the dish at home and it would have tasted better. When you spend over $90 on dinner including 1 drink each we expected a higher quality of taste in the food.
Very friendly, always great service here and the food is excellent. My wife and I celebrate our anniversary here every year. If the weather is good, you can sit outside and watch the boats come by. Definitely worth the drive from Williamsburg to Yorktown. Ben and Jerry's is across the street, so you can make it a complete date night!
