Riverwalk Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
We have dined at Riverwalk since 2005 and usually find it an excellent experience.
The cuisine is of a very high level but could improve in its vegan/vegetarian offerings -- some creative flair is needed here to offer more than a vegetarian pasta or salad selections.
We would visit this restaurant more often if they had a better vegetarian selection, although the chef is usually willing to provide a la carte items by our request.
The ambiance is excellent, although it can become a bit noisy if you have larger groups dining;
a corner table can help if you require a quieter place for conversation. Online reservations are quick and easy to make, and the site also advises how many others have booked on a particular day or evening.
While the staff are usually well-trained, they could use a little more refinement in their service.
For example, serving tea on a wet saucer, or failing to bring a specific item requested, or interrupting guests mid-sentence, without saying excuse me -- are some areas that might improve.
One of our guests ordered a rare hamburger; when the plate arrived, the hamburger was medium-rare. We waited until the waitress had returned, not wishing to interrupt her at other tables, due to guest volume. We then advised that the hamburger was not rare. The waitress responded, "Do you want to recook that?" She should have immediately apologized (as it was either her mistake or the chef's mistake) and promptly removed the plate, advising that another plate with the correctly cooked meal would be brought out quickly. She then said, "Do you want to separate the salad on your plate and keep that?"
The situation could have been handled in a more professional manner. The manager did return later and apologize, but the waitress could be trained to respond in the correct manner.
By the time the second plate arrived, our friend had lost her appetite and did not complete her meal.
It was an average evening, but not the best at Riverwalk.
We had the pleasure of having Sunday Buffet Brunch. It was outstanding.
Food was fresh and plentiful. Oysters Rockefeller, Crab dip, variety of pastries, fruit in a waffle cone, beef tips potatoes pasta salad etc. And not only that you can order a variety of egg dishes which includes benedict and pancakes.
Service was outstanding and the views are very nice. Comfortable seating. All around just great.
Will go again.
nice location, nice waitress. salads were good (panzanella) to quite good (kale caesar), entrees were disappointing or moderately good.
Fish and chips: cod okay, good but no more notable than that, one medium filet. Wrong potatoes totally for something resembling chips. These were just orange and oddly shaped mashed potatoes. One has to wonder if this chef has ever been to Great Britain. Advise he visit Manchester or Edinburgh before he attempts this dish again. There are variants there but even the fast-food level ones in these cities far surpass this mess and show and taste why its a popular basic dish.
Scallops with mushroom risotto, pork belly and rainbow carrots: fine scallops, risotto was built with the pork belly made it extremely rich, very nice sauted wild mushrooms on top. Forgot to garnish with the carrots, too bad, resulted in a reduction on this entre -least they could do.
Online, amateur reviews touted fresh cobbler dessert. They could not be from people who have actually had good homemade cobbler - was too sweet and out of balance, fruit to pastry.
Still can't fault the staff. They were pleasant, helpful, despite the circumstances.
Had to change reservation from a party of 8 to a party of 12 fairly late in the game. The restaurant was very accommodating and welcoming. The server did an excellent job and the food was very good. This was a first time visit for most of the party, which included people from Mathews to Virginia Beach. All were very pleased.
Almost like it was under new management. Cocktail was made incorrectly. Gin and tonic without tonic. Service was almost non existant even though restaurant had only four tables occupied. Food was beautifully presented but badly prepared. No sauce with one course, fish badly cooked. Almost unlike previous visits which were perfect in all areas. No bread served on table even though other diners had bread.
What was good -- soups !!
Our waitress Jennifer was outstanding!!! I can not say enough about her. She was very attentive to our needs without prompting. Great personality which put us to ease. Food was perfectly cooked which is hard to do with seafood. Next time we are in town, we will be stopping at Riverwalk Restaurant.
Overall the location is ideal. We sat outside on the deck to take advantage of the view and weather. Our server was good. We were disappointed by the taste or lack thereof of the food. The presentation was great but it lacked the taste you expect for the price paid. I felt I could easily create the dish at home and it would have tasted better. When you spend over $90 on dinner including 1 drink each we expected a higher quality of taste in the food.
Very friendly, always great service here and the food is excellent. My wife and I celebrate our anniversary here every year. If the weather is good, you can sit outside and watch the boats come by. Definitely worth the drive from Williamsburg to Yorktown. Ben and Jerry's is across the street, so you can make it a complete date night!
We moved ourselves after being seated due to flies and got a curt comment from the young hostess. The food was all right, the view was excellent (watching the boats go by on the York River), and the waitress was first rate. The brandy alexander I ordered was in the wrong glass and filled with ice. The restaurant is located in the heart of Yorktown on water street, on the York River, which is what I wanted but it will be a long time before I go back again.
Riverwalk is a stable for my girlfriend and I. We rarely get a chance to go but every visit is memorable. Since we are both foodies and lovers of seafood, we can easily say they have the freshest seafood available anywhere in and around the Richmond/Tidewater area. Sitting outside looking out over the York river and bridge at sunset is one of the most picturesque views in the state!
I chose to go to this restaurant for my birthday and it was one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. The only thing that didn't make it the worst was the fact the beautiful river and bridge could be seen from my table. I had a reservation for 715pm, when we arrived we were greeted by a very friendly hostess and asked if we would like inside or outside seating we chose outside seating. As we were walking to the dining room to be seated there was a party of probably 10 to 15 people seated inside other than that the restaurant was very slow the bar was completely empty. Once we were seated outside we waited eight minutes to be greeted by our waitress. She was very friendly and she did go over all the specials and was not a bad server by any means. We ordered the calamari for an appetizer, and after the waitress took our order she said she would be right back with hot bread. And the calamari came out it was so salty it was almost as if someone accidentally dumped a saltshaker inside the dish, so salty and made us cringe. The waitress apologize profusely and commented several other tables had mentioned the same thing. She asked if we would like something else and we declined as she said our entrées were getting ready to come out. We both ordered the fish of the day which was Tuna. It's OK that the fish is pre-portioned however both of our fish portions were cooked for the same time when mine was extremely thick and small and my fiancé's was longer and flat, causing his to be overcooked and mine to be cooked to the temperature I ordered. The potatoes & broccoli were cold. The sauce under the fish was also cold to the point it was developing a film. At this point I sat and waited for the waitress to come to check on us however she never reappeared, Long story short the manager was not understanding took the appetizer off that we barely touched but did not take her entrées off and charged me for the small salad I asked to take to go. $70 for the worst bday meal
We came for an Anniversary celebration which was noted on the reservation. No one mentioned anything and the service wasn't good enough to overlook that faux pas. Don't ask if it's a special occasion if you don't want to know.
It was quite empty on a Thursday. The she crab soup was delicious and when we told the server, she stated that " it never usually looks like that.....maybe they should keep making it this way."
The elk was very good and so were the fried oysters. My duck was over cooked and the giant mess of garnish was inedible. The fennel undercooked and the noodles An over cooked lump of nastiness. The fried combo was fine.
Frankly, save your money and have a drink at the grill next door if you want to enjoy the view.
