Rivers Ratings and Reviews
We chose Rivers as convenient for Lyric Opera, and had eaten here before for a similar occasion. It has improved in the last 5 years, and we would nothing to say against it; only that for frequent date dining it is rather expensive. But for once in a while or special occasion it is perfect.
We dined there before going to the Lyric Opera House, which is very close. But the only negative thing I could say is the noise level was really high. The brick walls and glass windows on the river side just didn't absorb the noise. HOWEVER, I can't wait to go back the food and service were excellent.
A little hidden in the middle of a building's lobby, this is a great pre-theater option for the Opera. My martini took two tries, but at least the second one came back with a little extra in the shaker, which I'll admit made it a little hard to stay awake during the first act. But my steak was fantastic, so well cooked and seasoned, I've been thinking about virtually every night since we were at Rivers. The server was friendly and very aware of our theater engagement and made sure we got thru our meal with plenty of time to grab a drink at the Lyric!
We were planning on having dinner, but were running late so we ordered 3 appetizers. They were really not good. Guacamole tower, the guac was good, but the chips very greasy! Bruschetta white bread w/ tomato. It was edible. Crab cakes. Tasted OK, but they were the size of marbles. The service was very friendly and fast which we appreciated, just did not care for the food.
Food was good, but the grouper entree was very, very small for a dinner entree. The seafood ravioli appetizer was delicious. Service was not bad, but not great either. We were ignored for rather long periods while our server dealt with larger tables. Restaurant was not at all full, but we were seated directly outside the entrance to the kitchen.
This has been a favorite for me for a long time (first ate at River's in the 90s). The dinner was great and the only suggestions would be to have the "early" diners provided with a bit more attention. We were there for an early pre-opera dinner and had to flag down the person for a bit more bread. Caesar salad is small, though the lettuce was fresh.
The seafood I had was terrific. The cappuccino was terrific.
Rivers is the best place for a great dinner before the opera.
Lots of options for everything from a light dinner salad to a robust multi-course meal. They always have several wonderful fish options. I have also had really good lamb chops or pork dishes. Reasonably priced choice of wines by the glass or bottle.
Rivers is a dependable restaurant for lunch. Food is well prepared, service is prompt and pleasant. Our server, Victor, was very polite and efficient. Rivers is fortunate to have Victor on its staff. I frequently dine at Rivers for lunch and will request to be seated in his area.
This is one of the few nice restaurants open on a Sat. evening near the Lyric opera- which we were attending; from the clientele mostly finishing up and leaving right around 7 pm, I could guess that many other diners were also having their pre-opera repast. The food at Rivers is good--and I found the service above average, with every effort to accommodate any special requests, and needs related to getting to the opera on time. We all had pasta entrees -- and although not exception-- the offerings were tasty and fresh. I know we will find ourselves at The Rivers again.
The spicy tomato soup was tasty with just the right amount of heat. The salad, however, seemed to have been dressed some time before it was served, and so was a little disappointing. The shrimp risotto was quite good, I'm told. Service, as always, was great.
