About River's End
The epicenter of Sonoma Coast dining...the River's End is located in the quaint village of Jenner by the Sea about 20 minutes north of Bodega Bay. The restaurant is set on a bluff overlooking the Russian River spill into the Pacific Ocean. During lunch you can watch the Osprey dive in the river for fish or the harbor seals frolic at riverside. Dinner time is all about the sunset ... the show is worth the visit. Fortunately, the restaurant chefs and service staff aim to outdo the natural surroundings. The kitchen prepares California cuisine with a focus on local ingredients. Chef Martin Recoder prepares menus that are changing with the seasons and delight the heart. The service staff is led by Maitre d'/Owner Bert Rangel, who has owned and managed the restaurant for over 10 years. The Chef in the Redwood Bar is talented Patrick Keane. Trained at the French Culinary Institute, Patrick utilizes the freshest ingredients and classic techniques to create truly “Artisanal Cocktails”.

River's End Ratings and Reviews
Loved this place, got to watch the sunset over the ocean from our table! Service was impeccable, both at the bar and at our table. Dinner was very tasty and portioned appropriately. Unfortunately, it was a bit breezy to enjoy a lovely cocktail on the deck which overlooked the mouth of the Russian River. Place is a little cramped, but the ambiance is still wonderful. Will definitely return for a special occasion or romantic dinner with my wife.
We had a group of six friends from Southern California wine tasting in the Russian River Valley and this restaurant was recommend by one of the local wineries. We had a wonderful lunch with an amazing view of the ocean during a beautiful cold and windy day. Would love to come back for dinner some day.
It's a beautiful location, with decent food, but unfortunately the poor service took away from it all. We arrived at about 5:20 for a 5:30 reservation, and went outside on the deck until our table was ready. We saw servers grab other people for their reservation, so we patiently waited our turn. At 5:45 we went back in to check, and were seated. It was another 15 minutes before they came back with a menu and a server. We were also sat right next to the back door, which was cold with people coming in/out. I think they forgot about our table and did not nothing to acknowledge their mistake. The food was pretty good, but for the price & experience, it wasn't worth it.
My husband and I first stumbled upon River's End 8 years ago for our first anniversary. We had such a great experience and excellent food. My husband still says it was the best scallops he's had and we have been looking forward to going back for a little while.
Fast forward to last weekend when we revisited for a special occasion, a "BabyMoon" as we are expecting our 1st child shortly.
I made reservations well in advance to get a good table to watch the sunset which is probably one of the main reasons people visit this restaurant. The evening started out good, we got there early and enjoyed some time on the deck overlooking the water. Since they don't start dinner service or seating until 5, we expected most of the people there were waiting as we were for our table. We were seated in the window which we were excited about. To get straight to the point, apparently many of the people on the deck were just there to watch the sunset. There were a group of 4 women who bought a drink at the bar and proceeded to stand, yes stand directly in front of our table basically blocking the entire sunset experience. There were also folks walking back and forth as well. What a disappointment and frankly what's the point of eating there when you can spend $20 bucks vs. a couple hundred to stand on the deck and watch the sunset. The management team as to do something about that.
As for food, we ordered the crab tasting menu. Let's just say that each course progressively got worse. The first was good and the next 4 courses were each worse than the one prior. Our 3rd course was a Tom Ka soup which was barely served cold.
There were 2 entree courses, Filet Mignon or a Lobster and Crabcake. The Filet came with a Huckleberry jam which was way to sweet and the crabcake was more panko breadcrumbs than crab or lobster, more like something you get from a freezer section. Lastly, dessert was lackluster scoop of grapefruit sorbert. We will only return if we think improvements are made.
We come from the Bay Area to stay in a local inn for a weekend and ALWAYS stop in to River's End for lunch or dinner. WE LOVE everything we have ever had there...and I am not kidding. Wanted to stay in a cabin this last trip, but that didn't work out. Whenever we are within 1/2 hour drive we will be coming in for a great time. Brought my sister & bro in law and they are hooked now as well.
O.K. where to begin? Alright...RIver's End is arguably one of the best places to eat in Sonoma County. I've lived here for years and have had many a meal at this iconic restaurant and with that said, the other night my wife and I had a meal that was so good, well, it was just hard to stop talking about how good the food and service were that evening. We ordered the Duck Confit Rolls, followed by their legendary Mushroom soup and then dove into the North American Elk entree. The chef knocked it totally out of the ballpark in terms of his preparation and combination of flavors. Fantastic! We finished off things with the Fresh Berry Trifle. OMG! Seriously, I've eaten at Sonoma Counties best places for years but River's End has an attraction, charm and quality that is truly really unique. Believe me...you will love this place. We do and can't wait to our next dinner there.
River's End is a great restaurant to have dinner at sunset along the Sonoma Coast in Jenner. My wife and I drove to the Coast after several days of wine tasting in Sonoma County. Along the way, we stopped at Armstrong Redwoods Preserve state park just north of CA 116. After a wonderful hike through the redwoods, we continued on to the coast and enjoyed gorgeous views of the Ocean, at the mouth of the Russian River. Having satiated our need for tranquility and beauty, we enjoyed a delightful crab menu, created by the chef at River's End. The theme of course is seafood, but we saw many people enjoying steak and other delights. The cocktails are well made, and the wine list is extensive, featuring Sonoma County's excellent wines. The Crab Menu, when it is available is prix fixe, and a bit pricey, but we thought it well worth the cost. Reservations are advised, especially in good weather, when many tourists head for this restaurant along with the locals. Easy parking adjacent. The views from the restaurant are spectacular, so make reservations for just before sunset.
I wanted very to lower my rating because my experience started out when I had to park ⅓ of a mile away and walk up highway one to the restaurant because all the parking closer was taken. Then, we waited 45 minutes after our appetizer to get our main course. Both events were quite frustrating. However the server was so charming and excellent and the food is clearly five star all the way, and the experience being there at sunset was so lovely, I had to stick with the five stars. Next time I hope I have better parking karma! It’s not many restaurants that I would have been able to get past the first two events and ever gone back. The food and ambiance is that good!
The restaurant is overlooking the water and has very attentive staff, yet the seafood is not fresh and not flavorful. I read some previous reviews and saying their food didn’t taste fresh or flavorful. Unfortunately they turned out to be true. Living in the Bay Area we expect more.
We made a lunch reservation, and when we arrived, we were treated like royalty. The table they reserved had a gorgeous view of the river-ocean confluence. It was a bit sunny and warm in January, so we used the pull-down screen after while. My husband ordered the mushroom soup and I sampled it -- it was the most luscious soup I had ever tasted. I had fish and chips, my husband had the pulled-pork sandwich. Both were delicious. We shared a scoop of chocolate cardamom ice cream for dessert. We really didn't want the meal to end! Service was respectful, down to earth and unobtrusive for the most part. Highly recommend!
It was a rainy Sunday evening off season and a perfect meal with friends and an out of town guest. The clam appetizer was delicious, the sole main was cooked to perfection and the pasta special was tasty. The sound of the rain drops on the roof and ocean view were lovely. Service was on spot and we enjoyed a quiet unrushed perfectly timed meal.
We were there for lunch. Amazing view!!! Good service. Excellent bottle of Champaign. Unfortunately, less than average food. Ceviche was pure vinegar - couldn't taste the fish. No salt, no pepper, no any other flavor - just vinegar and a lot of it. Beet Salad very pretty but the same: no salt, no pepper, no any other taste. I like beets but I can have it plane at home. The oysters were good (not great and very very small size). I would guess that for lunch there is no chef if there is, it is even worse. I would not recommend this restaurant. So sad, loved the view. :-(
Phenomenal. Always. Service is friendly and casually excellent. Not over done - just perfect. The food is beautiful and generous. I recommend taking a look at the menu before you go so you can plan. Prices are not cheap, but the food isn’t either! It is NOT over priced but it is an expense. Entrees are shareable, so you can enjoy more variety! I could go on forever. I have never had a bad experience here and will always look forward to going back!
This was our second visit to River's End...and it was equally as wonderful as the first time! The menu had changed a bit (seasonal) but the Crab Tasting menu (my choice) was outstanding! Looking back, I wish I had also chosen the wine pairing with it, however our cocktails were great and I had a great glass of wine as well. Due to weather we missed the view of the sunset -however it was a beautiful view just the same. The evening was EXTRA special thanks to our OUTSTANDING server "LEE"....she is a gem....she served us the first time as well, and now after this visit ---we would always request to be seated in her section. Probably one of the best servers I've ever experienced in fine dining. Friendly, knowledgeable, and knows the menu...including the wines! Cheers to "Lee" Thank you for making our dining experience memorable once again and my birthday very special!
Great location and menu. I went there with a friend and we enjoyed watching the ocean and seals. The views are spectacular and the cuisine great. Our server was knowledgeable and friendly and told us about the history of the restaurant. The chef is creative and uses local food sources. I will definitely go back again.
Although the restaurant has beautiful views, I don' think they've made any updates to the interior of this restaurant since the 70's. Prices are high for the quality of food, although they tried hard on the presentation of the beet salad, there was hardly any flavor. It did not taste like fresh roasted beets. The Duck confit rolls were fine, and the clams were okay, mostly overcooked clams with loads of sauce and flavor overpowering the overcooked clams. It was just fine, and 3 appetizers with a glass of wine was $80. ouch!
