Absolutely lovely location and the food is delicious. Its family style so come prepared to share and pick a few sides.
Overall, the experience was good. My only complaint is the noise level of the band that was playing inside. It was impossible to have a good conversation at a place you’d expect to.
Excellent service venue and food
Love the location! Food was good too but I think we ordered wrong. I don't think we understood the portions. We were 4 ladies splitting the big fish, a big salad, and 2 appetizers. This was a post-theatre early dinner at 5:45 so didn't want to order a lot but had to go home to really eat dinner! We belated ordered some veggies but they took so long to get out it was sort of too late. The highlight however was when the waiter brought out carrot cake for the birthday girl in our group. It was delicious! I would go again and order the chicken or rack of ribs. Or, if I really wanted the fish (it was very tasty!), I would order more sides to go with it.
I first chose River Roast because of its location on the river and the outdoor dining. But I was pleasantly surprised with how great it looked inside as well. The food was amazing. There was a group of us, so we shared several things on the menu. I loved the burrata appetizer and the “boatload of veggies”! Definitely will be back when I’m in Chicago again.
Great patio on the river!!
The hostess had us wait about ten minutes for an outdoor table in the shade for lunch, which wasn't bad. I ordered some lettece instead of chips with my fish sandwich. There was an extra $2 on a considerable base price of $14. The fish was very nice, but the salad had so much vinegar on it it was almost inedible. Waiter never checked in after another server gave us our dishes. And he avoided eye contact except for asking if he could take the check when there was no card down yet. His main focus seemed to be to turn the table, even though there were several tables open.
We were not served for an hour and a half. They lost our order and we had to eat within five minutes to make it to an obligation.
First off I just want to say that our server was amazing. I wish I could remember her name to give her a shout out. I went here with my husband for dinner, and although the menu is small, there is something for everyone. We started with the shrimp and crab toast which was delicious, I would go back just for this, and the pork meatballs. The meatballs were ok, just not my favorite. For our main course we had the fried chicken which was the "Roast of the Month" and it was awesome! So flavorful and juicy. I will definitely go back in the future with a group of people!
I really enjoy it. Looking forward to the next time going.
Great apps and salads, beautiful view. TY
Wonderful food, service and location!
Great food, ambience and service
Arrived on time and announced ourselves to the hostess for our reservation at 6:30 pm. Outdoor dining is first come, first served. We were told it would be about 1/2 hour wait so opted to have a drink at the bar and be put on waitlist for outside. We were told bartender would advise when table was ready. An hour later and nothing. Bartender went to check as we noticed people who came after us were being seated. They'd forgotten about us! Finally got a table. Food was good, especially the roasted Branzino fish. Server was busy but attentive until dessert. We ordered and it didn't come for a long time. Just pie simply cut and plated so don't know what happened. We settled the bill presented with dessert and were eating the pie and chatting with our friends when another server approached us and said they were closing in 5 minutes around 9:45 pm!It certainly brought the evening to an abrupt end. Then the next day we received a notice from Open Table that we "no showed" for our reservation! We have eaten at this restaurant several times but this time there was clearly a disconnect with the front of the house. It may take us a while to consider returning.
A fabulous dinner and great view of the river and city. Service was fine, though it could have been more attentive to engaging us as customers. Dessert was a smores inspired treat that was rather bland.
Great river views, delicious food, big portions.
Had our first anniversary there on Saturday and it was amazing. River roast is our favorite spot in Chicago!
5 girlfriends and I ate here after I tried on maybe 30 wedding dresses downtown. Needless to say we were hungry, hot, and tired. Our reservation wasn't until 730pm, BUT they don't take reservations for the patio along the river, so I had planned to come earlier to just wait for first come first serve seating. Luckily I decided to call and see how busy the patio was (it was 5pm on a Saturday with perfect weather out) and to see if we could move our reservation up. The host (I think his name was Trey) was so kind and said moving it up shouldn't be a problem, and that they could hold a table for all of us if we showed up in the next hour. We were across the river at City Winery, so we chugged our wine and made our way across. Fair warning, there's some construction along the river that kind of made our walk over more difficult than it should have been but that's Chicago summertime for ya. Anyways, we got there and we were seated at the last table on the patio, held specifically for us, with a great view of the river. I was so happy because it was the perfect end to a day of wedding dress shopping, even if I didn't find a gown. As for everything else, the food was amazing, the cocktails were refreshing, and our server (sorry kid I don't remember your name) was very attentive. I would definitely come back here!!
We had the whole chicken, potatoes, green beans, rabbit, and bbq chips. Everything tasted wonderful. Our waiter was the best! We sat out on the patio on extremely nice day. Wouldn’t change anything about our experience.
Food is amazing! Had a lovely evening sitting by the river and enjoying a delicious dinner!
I would not repeat a visit here. The prices are high for what you get...one pound of roast beef
is $64! The food was good...not outstanding. We ordered two different cocktails and neither was
noteworthy. Service was okay. We did have to flag our server down more than once.
The view is very nice, but we went here to eat!
High point: decaf coffee after our dinner.
Good food, a bit on the pricey side for what you get.
A warm summer night filled with the laughter of people enjoying a meal with great friends, the boats passing by on the river filled with tourists taking in the sights of the city. It was just the right restaurant for the couple we invited to see the city and enjoy their hometown from a different view. The menu is limited, cost is fair and the service is awesome. Bring a good friend and dont forget the camera.
Have been here several times and have had mixed experiences. Our most recent visit was disappointing. Our appetizers were both good but the entrees weren't. We ordered the roast chicken and a sea bass and were surprised at how quickly they arrived. The chicken was dry and overdone, looking like it had been sitting around for a while. The fish, on the other hand, was so undercooked as to be half inedible. Service was rather spotty this time as well, having to ask several times for things.
Family 4th of July
Ran out of food.
The food was terrific. Best meal in Chicago we had all week. Monthly “roast” (fried chicken) was outstanding.
Chef John Hogan serves up a feast of roasted vittles, in our case pork and cauliflower, meatballs and arugula and peas salad. Magical evening sitting outside watching the last light of day reflect off skyline, watercraft skimming by on river.
We always get their signature roasted chicken but this time we tried the prime rib and it was outstanding as well. You should not ever miss their "dirty carrots" because they're nothing short of amazing. We also tried their creamed spinach this time and we we're almost fighting each other for it because it was soooooo good. I guess you just need to order everything! Our friends got the amazing chicken the "boatload of veggies" and they felt the same way about their food. Just do it! No regrets, ever at River Roast. It's a "must"!
Service let something to be desired food was subpar for price
Nothing beats patio seating on the river during Chicago Summer!
In town for a few nights- great spot on the river. Really enjoyed the menu bc it was different from anything at home. Waiter was warm and friendly- service a bit slow but there was a huge event on the other side. Would go back- and would make sure my stomach is empty!
Country fried rabbit was outstanding. Very well cooked if you never tried rabbit that meal should be the first if you ever decide to try rabbit flavors well balanced 5 stars. Defiantly going back for more!!!!
WOW!!!!!!!!!! Try the mushroom toast. the food was beyond phenomenal. Just great. The atmosphere, the beautiful river view. Our server Christopher was a delight. The bacon and shrimp was cooked to perfection. The only downside is limited to no parking, but it was worth it.
Excellent food. Lamb pastrami for a appetizer was unbelievable. Signature whole chicken was juicy and flavorful and enough to feed 2-3. My son and I had the the monthly special of the pork shank and was absolutely delicious. Will be back to try the prime rib.
Delicious! Lucked out with an OpenTable reservation. Service was great! Looking forward to going back! Great outdoor seating option - was too hot this time.
The waitress forgot half of our order and it showed up after we had finished most of our meal. She didn't know the menu items very well and had to read them off a list, then gave us wrong info for what was in one of the dishes. Overall she seemed very scattered and unprofessional. It was a damper on the evening.
Great view overlooking the river. Good happy hour with a nice assortment of nibbles and a fantastic old-fashioned. No wine on happy hour menu, though.
Food was amazing!
A different dining experience, and an excellent one. You choose your protein and tell them how many ounces you want. Plates can be ordered individually, but we chose to share and ordered larger portions of beef, pork and the vegetable platter. Food is carved tableside and everything was wonderful. We ate outside on a beautiful evening with a view of all the boats going down the river. I look forward to going again soon!
It was a great time and everyone loved their meal!
Although I have eaten here several times for lunch and dinner, my last experience will keep me away from lunch for a long time. Both of us ordered same lunch.
The corn chowder soup arrived “cold”: when Re-heated, it was good. The fish sandwich was mushy and tasteless. The key lime pie was mediocre at best. We had to ask three different people to refill coffee.
It appears that unless you order one of the main large entrees which always are good, you might as well eat at Potbelly’s
We certainly appreciated the “comp” of our sandwiches, but that is not why we came. Only because server was nice will we return when we are prepared to eat large entrees.
