River Oaks Ratings and Reviews
I've tried it 3 times because friends have said good things about it. Well 3 strikes and it's out. How can you cover a very small strip steak (maybe 6 oz) in watery gravy, over cook the heck out of it and charge Flemings or Ruth's Criss prices. Our dinner for 5 ran over $350 without deserts. Started with their Beignets as the waitress suggested, bland and tasteless. The steak was a bad joke and everything from the bar was incredibly over-priced. Their wine prices are laughable. I just don't understand it's popularity at all.
As was expected, Chef José's food was outstanding and the ambience of the restaurant was perfect. When we arrived, the restaurant was almost full, but even with so many people there, once we were seated, it felt like we were in our own little corner of the world. I can't wait to go back again!
We were celebrating our daughter's graduation from high school. Our server Mary Beth was attentive, cheerful, helpful. The food was delicious and beautifully plated. We were 9 and they gave us a table in an alcove so it was quieter. Would go back in a heartbeat.
Really enjoyed the appetizers (crab cake and cheese beignets) and my entrée (crispy tuna) - YUM! My Bellini was delicious, too. The desserts were ok - apple turnover and cookie. Our waitress was new, but she was outstanding...I never would have guessed she just started. Very sweet, knowledgeable, and made good recommendations (the tuna!). The ambiance was nice and quiet as the restaurant wasn't packed. We really enjoyed it and will be back.
Our First time to River Oaks. We will go back...thought the lamb was a bit tough but very tasty...petite salad was disappointing , however the salad with goat cheese was excellent. Scallops were great. Our friends had the halibut which I will order my next time dining there.
The best way that I know to rate a restaurant is to answer the question, will I go back again. My answer for River Oaks is that I will not be back. I have been there several times over the years, and in my opinion, it is beginning to look a little tired and needs updating. Our server was prompt, but not very friendly or outgoing. There were four in our group. Two "said" that their meal was good. But, my wife and I were very disappointed. I had the pork chop. I asked for medium. It was well done. It was tough as a piece of leather. It was difficult to cut. My wife had the lamb chops. They were loaded with garlic and very dry. To me, visually, her plate did not look very appetizing. I ordered the cookie with ice cream as a desert. It was suppose to be their specialty. The cookie was hard and not much better than buying one from Kroger and heating it up. This was a birthday dinner. We were disappointed. At this price range there are dozens of restaurants in Memphis that are much, much better. I will not be back. Sorry to say that.
